Vampyr looks slightly "Hot Topic" but if tapping the teen goth crowd boosts sales, more power to Criterion. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure?

Also, someone sent me DVD-R dubs of Criterion's laserdiscs for Othello (Welles) and The Magnificent Ambersons. I'm surprised by how good the a/v quality turned out. Now I'm more inclined to seek out more LD stuff that probably won't make it to DVD.

I'm so happy to see High and Low getting a new release, I've been putting off buying it in hopes of this day. The current Vampyr DVD is terrible so a new realease is welcome but since this one says it comes from a 1998 restoration I wonder if the other DVD was from that as well.

The Image disc used a non-HD restoration made by David Shepard while the Criterion and MoC DVDs will use a HD restoration by Martin Koerber. I'm not sure if the film elements will be drastically different, but the quality of the image should be a lot better and it won't have the annoying boxes around the subtitles.

Yes the sales are twice a year, in May and November. Buy.com has a bunch on sale until the 22nd, so if you've got one of those Google Checkout coupons that can beat DVDPlanet's sale prices. vertov posted:The Image disc used a non-HD restoration made by David Shepard while the Criterion and MoC DVDs will use a HD restoration by Martin Koerber. I'm surprised that David Shepard would be behind such a poor quality DVD. I assumed it was one of those anonymously produced titles (like many of the PRC discs) released through Image. vvv Maybe, but Shepard's 1992/1993 transfers for the Charlie Chaplin features still look excellent today. I'm under the impression that the version on that DVD is well over a decade old and was made for laserdisc. I'm fairly sure I saw it that way back in middle school. It wasn't so bad at the time, but HD mastering is spoiling us (in a good way).

"Hot Topic?" That cover for Vampyr is absolutely perfect in the context of the movie. I could be wrong but I think that is the first cover art I have liked since they switched from their old style.

I'm so happy about "High and Low", I was just thinking the other day that I may have to wait years before Criterion did an update on it, but Criterion has proved me wrong! Does that now mean that all of Kurosawa's movies have Anamorphic DVD releases, correct?

A comment on a blog is purely rumor, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be true. CC has released plenty of P&P already, with Scorsese commentaries, and A Matter of Life and Death is a major title.

Christ. I might have to end up buying The Third Man for the THIRD loving time, as well as rebuying Chungking Express and The Man Who Fell to Earth and I just know I won't be able to resist For All Mankind or The Last Emperor or Contempt in hi-def. Thanks for emptying my wallet Criterion, you loving bastards.

It's interesting that they were able to get two titles for blu ray that they were never able to get for standard DVD. Maybe the math has changed since then, but do you think that blu ray will be a more welcoming format to third party DVD companies since it's still sort of a niche market? It would be cool if we saw a scenario closer to the days of laserdisc when companies like Criterion could license pretty much anything they wanted.

It's cool that they finally did it, but I always took a small comfort when I bought Criterion dvds thinking that it'd take them forever to switch to Blu-ray. I've been pretty hesitant to switch over just yet because it seems fairly in-depth. 1080i? 1080p, what the hell? I noticed most cable channels look like poo poo on all my friends HD-TVs. I'd also have to buy a blu-ray player and the component cables. Lot of money to get it set up right now. I'm not even sure how standard def dvds would fare on an HD-TV or if I'd have to change the settings or what.

All right... goddamn, I'm still way excited. It's blowing my mind that not only is El Norte finally coming out on a decent R1 DVD, AND it's Criterion, AND it's Blu-Ray. I love that movie so much, probably more than it deserves. Possible buys: The Last Emperor (need to see the movie first) For All Mankind (like the movie, but low rewatch value) The Wages of Fear (not a huge fan, but I lower my standards a bit for Blu-Ray) Probable buy: Chungking Express Definite buys: El Norte The Third Man Bottle Rocket The 400 Blows (I wish it was the whole Doinel set, though) Fortunately for my wallet I have no interest in the other 5 titles.

El Norte is a surprising choice. I really enjoyed the second or third generation VHS copy my film professor played for us a few years ago, so the blu-ray would probably be like watching a whole different movie. Anyway, I guess I'm buying a PS3 now.

I'm not even sure how standard def dvds would fare on an HD-TV or if I'd have to change the settings or what. Most cable channels look like poo poo because there's a lot of programming shot for standard-def that's just upscaled for HD. HDNet stuff and The Sopranos look great in HD. Since studios have top-line remastering studios and are going from film negatives and essentially downgrading to 1080 HD, they have a tendency to look amazing. Go into a store - they'll probably be running a Disney Blu-Ray or Casino Royale or something similar - you'll see why the format's exciting for film nerds and A/V nuts. Standard-def DVDs on the most ubiquitous Blu-Ray player out there with upscaling, the PlayStation 3, end up coming down to the DVD transfer itself and the TV you're watching it on. For example, the first two Harry Potter movies were transferred amazingly and look great upscaled on an HDTV. Prisoner of Azkaban, on the other hand, looks great in standard-def but loses some luster when upscaled. I do hope they take advantage of some of the crazy poo poo being done with BD, like Independence Day's indexing database (want to start the movie from a specific line in the film like "WELCOME TO EARF"? Look it up and choose it - bam, there you go) or Profile 2.0, which allows for downloadable content on capable players. Oh man, if they do Dolby HD audio or DTS-HD Master Audio for some of these movies - oh god - OH GOD

I never expected something like this. This has to be some of the greatest news ever. I've had HD DVD since December 2006 and BD since March 2007... so I've done my share of waiting for good titles. Once they break out the big guns like Kurosawa, Bunuell and Bergman, the tables will definitely turn... at least with the niche crowd! Sure will be a fun year coming up!
