Is that everything you have?

Why is he in a robe, anyway? He was in armor and fighting with a Katana when he first showed up back in Azure City.

He keeps leading ambassador missions trying to get help and assistance from other groups of people so he's wearing diplomatic clothes.

He isn't. Elan is. Unfortunately, that means they need a few people to whisper bits of common sense in his ear.

Plus, it's a kimono, not a robe.

Plus, it's widely speculated that Elan took the Leadership feat and Daigo is one of his followers.

P.S. Jane's World? Really? That's just insulting.

It's the same thing he wore for his wedding. I'm guessing it's formal wear to reflect his changed status to nobility.

I had a video of that when I was about 6.

I remember it being shit.

He could be a charisma-high paladin.

He was never a paladin. He was a city-guard who's been recently promoted to nobility. All signs point to simple fighter, though I don't think they've established his class for certain, so there could be some other details in there.

The surviving Azurians seem to be a lot more interesting nowadays. I'm not sure if it's because they're out of the city and developing or just because he culled all the boring ones.

I'm getting kind of sick of Elan. You can only be a god drat idiot so long before the joke gets old.

...He's a D&D character. In a comic strip. He exists for comedy relief.

You can't make every character deep, and when you try you get horrible, unfocused comics like Sluggy Freelance.

It's not a matter of character depth, which I think he already HAS, it is just that dumb people are almost never as funny as smart people.

Dumb characters work on a different plane of humor. Having characters like Roy, Redcloak, and Varsuvius around lets Burlew make smarter jokes, like wordplay or biting sarcasm. Elan, Thog and Belkar, on the other hand, exist for slapstick and dumb humor like you'd get in a movie like Airplane or something.

Obviously Elan and the other core characters have shown some moments of depth, but by and large I think the greater comic is better served in using each comedic tool how its intended. Don't use a screwdriver when you need a hammer.

True enough, but I think Elan is at his funniest when he's breaking the 4th wall by pointing out genre conventions, plot points, etc. rather than the retard routine. That really his is main strength, more so than any of his class abilities.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

I think that Elan suffers a lot from the group being broken up. I like him in general, but he really needs Roy and Haley to play off of. On his own (or with other flatter characters like Durkon) it's just like half of a routine. I think in general only a few of the OotS characters are really engaging enough to be able to stand without the larger dynamics.

In an extremely surreal way, it seems as though Elan actually successfully completed their mission, and they might be able to get some supplies now.

Actually, there is. Bards, sorcerors, druids and barbarians come out next year in a different handbook because WotC are total cunts.

Or because they couldn't get them to work in time for the first PHB so they are waiting until they're good instead of releasing a halfassed version like they did in 3rd edition
