Dr. Drew rarely gets that "gritting your teeth with anger" voice that Adam does, but when he does do it, it's usually about the fact that these anti-abortion people should be thrilled that the morning after pill could possibly curb abortions in the US by a significant amount if educated and distributed correctly. I know Adam says it often, but he is right: The anti-abortion/birth control people aren't ant-abortion/birth control, they are pro-telling people what to do. He compares it to the NRA; they aren't pro-civil liberties as he says they claim, they, they are pro-guns. For a great show, check out the 8/15/02 show. It might be the best rant episodes I've heard, as it contains rants about the above, plus a fantastic diatribe on the city of Burbank

I don't follow loveline now, was Stryker scheduled to be off? Edit: listening to a copy, I guess Stryker was scheduled on vacation and Producer Anne was out and Adam just announced he was going to be on and showed up regardless of the fact they have 2 other guests on already. I tried to stick with Loveline after Adam left, but every time I listened to it I ended up turning it off after 1/2 hour or so. I was a devoted Loveline listener for about 9 years, but it just wasn't the same without the Adam / Drew dynamic. I just happened to be in the car at 10pm last night and so tuned in for the first time in probably 2 years. Talk about a rare treat. It was great to hear them back together again. Come back, Adam! :-(

Listening to Adam's return right now, and it's striking me as so weird how there's just a completely new generation of Loveline listeners. Nobody who called in recognized his kingly presence, and I just found myself thinking "my God, how can they listen to this show without knowing what it used to be and what this man did for it??" It's like if you had a kid and you walked in him listening to your old records that he found up in the attic. Very briefly you'd feel such joy and nostalgia, and then he'd say "what is all this old crap?"

Stryker is a good DJ if you need someone just to throw to songs but he isn't suited for talk. He does strike me as very insecure of his position but I don't have the raw hatred it seems like alot of you have for him.

It's not hate, he just reeks of desperation. You can hear it in the way he speaks, the way he squeezes out jokes that kind of end in a question as if they weren't strong enough to be confidently delivered, and the way he talks exponentially faster than anyone else on the show like.. like if he leaves space callers will break through the phone lines and start to abuse his rear end.

I have skipped over episodes of Loveline while listening to them at work because Stryker was subbing in for Adam. I can take about 10-15 minutes of him before I just go insane because he's obnoxious. Adam is obnoxious, but he's also clever and funny.

I just listened to 2003-11-19 with Pink, where Adam has car trouble and so Drew somehow brings in Stryker for the first few minutes of the show. "Desperation" is a good description. Also, it was surprising how flustered Drew seemed by Pink; Drew loves bad radio, but he's not that bad an interviewer, and he seemed genuinely frightened of having to talk to her on his own. Even so, I enjoyed Stryker's comically abrupt departure when Adam showed up. He basically said, "Heyyyy, here's Adam! Okay bye!" *door slam*

Someone mentioned "top 10" so I'm going to list the best Loveline episodes I've heard, off the top of my head: - Will Sasso, 2005. Awesome show all around, love Sasso's laugh for some reason. The gay morning zoo bit is hysterical. - Jay Mohr, 2001. Both Mohr and Carolla are at the top of their game here. Mohr laments the fact that Drew and Adam don't laugh at his jokes, which just sets up more comedy and the rest of the show has a lot of good callbacks. - Violent J, 2000, I think. A classic show where Violent J makes fun of a rape survivor and where most of his drops originated. - All DAG shows. None of them are bad, most of them are worth multiple listens. - All Patton Oswalt & Brian Posehn shows. I think there were 2 or 3 of these shows, and they're all brilliant. Oswalt is a great comedian and very quick on his feet and works great with Carolla. - All Queens of the Stone Age shows. What's the lead singer's name? Yeah that guy, he's awesome. Hysterical guy. - All Dicky Barrett/MMB shows. The chemistry between Dicky Barrett and Carolla is classic. And Dicky is sharp, always on his toes with whatever joke Carolla is on about, which is the mark of a good, clever guest. Too many guests will have no clue where Carolla is going, and either make some awful embarrassing joke or just sits back and shuts up. - The Vandals, 2003. Definitely check out any show with The Vandals, they're great guys. The '03 show was especially memorable. - Bill Nye, 2003. Bill Nye the Science Guy fits in perfectly with the Loveline theme somehow. It's great to hear Bill squirm during a few anal sex calls. Lots of talk about space exploration and airplanes and whatnot, whole segments with no calls. - Ron Perlman, 2004. Despite some uncomfortable moments with Carolla rants against religion, it's a pretty drat good show.

Yeah Stryker is bland, but he's young and edgy and hip and the kids can relate to him. At least, that's how some marketing director saw it. To me, Stryker has always come across as a little kid going to work with Daddy. He's over-eager, excitable, and has never sounded mature. Drew is a board-certified physician and addiction medicine specialist. Stryker is... a DJ. Adam had lived a varied enough life to be interesting. Stryker's life seems sterile. The problem with trying to connect with the Loveline demographic is that anybody who the audience can truly relate to would be a bisexual rape victim addicted to amphetamines. CBS/Westwood One needs to find somebody who's witty and engaging with a little bit of common sense and maybe, just maybe, they'll recapture the magic of the show's peak. Also, maybe they'll get it back on the air in Orlando.

I listen to old Loveline episodes when I drive to work (one episode lasts me about two days, which I've figured out is the perfect listening rate so it never gets stale) and 2004-08-09 (no guest) came up today. The caller at the end (about 10-20 minutes left at the end) is the genuinely craziest guy I've ever heard call in. At first I thought he was just joking or something but they keep him on the line and it becomes obvious he's seriously mentally ill. They said bipolar combined with speed, which sounds about right. At first you can't understand a word he's saying but he eventually slows down to almost human speed... the episode is pretty good in general but that call just put it over the top for me.

Yesterday I listened to an episode where Carolla goes in-depth on his days of teaching traffic school at the "Lettuce Amuse You" comedy traffic school. You can hear his teeth grit the entire time, epic rant.

I got a chance to see The Hammer. Nothing great, but still decently funny. Definitely the best non-radio media Carolla's been involved with. And to weight in on Stryker. Remember Adam reiterating the fact that the executives always wanted him to take "more calls?" It's obviously they had a direction in mind for the show, which meant more Dr. Drew advice, and less entertainment. Why hire someone who has the potential to be interesting and funny, when all you need is a trained monkey who can interview lovely bands and throw it to commercial break? I think Stryker is the perfect person for what they wanted that show to turn into. It's sad for people who aren't 14 year old, sexually abused crack addicts, though. I don't think I ever listened to a Stryker show for more than 10 minutes. But that's probably all you need to grasp his role. I hope he's at least hosting the show though, because Drew is the absolute worse when in the pilot seat and trying to interview someone. Good lord does he suck at that.
