Just out of curiosity, and I realize there was almost zero time to make a decision, but how much would throwing it into 3rd and letting the engine blow up have done to slow down the car?

Not nearly enough at all, especially with third. Even if he got his rear wheels to the threshold of static / dynamic friction with the handbrake or something I doubt it would have slowed him down a whole lot more than he had already managed before his brakes blew.

I'm guessing the town planners who put these things in have a vindictive streak as wide as the "lol deserve everything they get" commentators on YouTube. Nobody becomes a town planner, of course, they just fail at being something more noteworthy and hence the air of spite and stupidity. For example, the new retracting bollards near me do serious damage to cars, do not stop motorcyclists, are abused endlessly by locals who know how to run them, and merely force everyone else to take other routes instead, often at a higher speed to compensate for the longer journey time. Thus they merely displace the problem rather than prevent it. Even worse is that the bollards are now turning up away from town centres, meaning the stupid and the unwary are getting whiplash and their cars wrecked not to protect pedestrian areas but to stop them driving in a bus lane. A god damned line on the road! And gently caress me making GBS threads if morons aren't actually supporting it.

It seems really dangerous to make the punishment for speeding and/or running a light be launching the vehicle into the air.. Wouldn't the better solution be to make it go the other way and retract into the ground like so: code:

I really want to put a WRX in my VW, too bad I would have to make it water cooled and cut up the car in the process. It would be for the greater good right? right?
