That video gives me hope for still riding my XR400 around a track, even though I probably won't do it again any time soon. I took off my turn signals after a while because I would turn them on unintentionally and drive around the track looking rather goofy.

I don't know how many times I've watched that motard video, so careless, so insane, yet I love watching it. The lead rider is loving crazy. He almost looses the rear at 10:30, I've done that a couple times and absolutely love a supermoto's ability to soak up what on any other bike would probably be a pretty sweet highside.

Yeah, it's certainly more entertaining than watching most track videos, despite the fact that you know the guys on the track are going way god drat faster. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u65oKLXDWb4 Joe makes a pretty entertaining video. He's got some good ones besides that one if you check out his channel. Thats compression braking & the back lifting on the brakes. There is little risk of highsiding because you still have traction, but the force of the engine braking is allowing it to spin slower than the front wheel so it steps out. If you just stepped on the rear brake at that speed, you would no doubt highside. Or if you accelerated too hard on corner exit, you would also highside. Its abrupt loss and regain of traction that causes high side. All you need to do to back in is to come into a corner real hot, get on those brakes to get the back end light, shift down 2-3 gears, feed the clutch and lean into the corner, all at sort of the same time. IMO, the guys in the SM video have more balls than the guys riding on the track at 200+kmh

Sumos look so easy to wheelie. I can't figure it out on my DRZ though, I can get it up but its so touchy because of the amount of engine braking there is. I suck at wheelies though. God I wish my DRZ had more power.

The trick is to get into a higher gear just as you're coming up to balance point. Whack the throttle in 1st, as it approaches balance pt, clutchless shift it up to 2nd and then its just throttle control.. its too touchy to wheelie in 1st thats for sure. Or just clutch it up in 2nd.

It takes a special kind of stupid to ride like that on the street, the same sort that usually ends with someone plastered all over the front of a car. There's very little skill involved in most of what they do anyways, just the willingness to take chances and pass like a moron on blind corners and some experience on those roads. Not to say I don't enjoy watching it, I just hope that when they wad it they go off a cliff rather than into someone's car.

While it is stupidity, the skill they showed was on par with what the supersports were doing on the track. The guy in front showed great control especially on one wheel, he was able to steer it back into his lane. He was also backing it in on most corners. My guess is they are greek. Only a greek would ride like that and squid at the same time.

Jharkov posted:Interesting. Eh, this is a debate that could go on forever. My stance on it is like so: teaching someone to ride in the top group at a track requires a much larger skillset. Gotta learn to threshold brake, set entry speed within a mph or so, consistantly, get comfortable snapping the bike onto it's side, learn to modulate the throttle on corner exit, manage suspension setup, tire wear, etc. Wheelies require balance, throttle modulation, and rear brake modulation. You're just required to use fewer inputs to get the job done. I was going to mention it before...backing it in is flashy but only effective at lower speeds. When most of your corners on a typical track occur at at least 50mph, and the majority will be at 65+mph at apex with entry speeds and exit speeds pushing 80-100mph, with fast corners taking place at 90+, you're best off keeping both wheels in line on anything but the slowest corners on the track. The hairpin that siglin backs it in on is a roughly 50mph double apex, and he's not even taking the backing it in to the apex, like an SM rider could. I agree on them being greek...those guys generate the most absurd videos. Z3n fucked around with this message at 20:24 on Sep 17, 2008 |
