I'm not really surprised, but it does bother me a little. I'm still going to buy it and probably enjoy it, but I do feel that their better work is with the movies that are really bad. That's the whole appeal of the thing. Let's watch a really lovely movie, and marvel over how lovely it is, while still being able to enjoy it because of all the jokes. When it's a movie I actually like, I pay more attention to the movie than the riffs, and by the end, I want to just shut up the riffers so I can watch. The only exception to this was Jurassic Park. I love that movie, and I love the riff, but I think that's a rare case.

They need to do more movies like Transmorphers or something. Movies that are truly turkeys.

Well I wasn't going anyway to but thanks for the tip, captain commerce.

I've been watching MST3K since God only knows when. I like to hear Mike and the guys rip into a bad movie, which they do all too infrequently these days. Seriously, think of your five favourite Rifftrax. I'll be loving surprised as hell if your list is made of good movies rather than poo poo like Roadhouse and the Happening.

Plavski posted:

For example, I couldn't get into the Raiders of the Lost Ark riff, because god damnit, the movie is too much fun. It has a real sense of humour about itself and doesn't take itself seriously at all. Hence it's a loving awful target for riffing.
Precisely. The only reason to riff on The Lost Ark is the name recognition / money grab aspect - which is OK in moderation but kinda sucks when most riffs these days tend to be on those lines.

I didn't hate the Lost Ark riff, but I really wish they'd do more bad movies. I don't mind them riffing on big budget DVD releases, but god drat - there are BAD big name DVD releases out there. Do them. It's like going to an art gallery to laugh at a Van Gogh because some of the faces look funny while there's a furry art convention next door.

Every bad movie connoisseur knows schadenfreude is at it's finest when the target really tried his best and still failed. It's not nearly as much fun if they're being bad ironically or just goofing around.

EDIT: oh and don't go to the Rifftrax forums. Currently they're fighting about the riff being in poor taste because Heath Ledger died. What :what:

That was a stupid thing to say. And you're stupid for saying it.
I'm not pissed that they're doing Dark Knight, I just wish they would move away from the superhero genre once or twice a year. I just saw "The Strangers" the other day and thought how much it needed a good riffing. The Grudge was one of their first riffs and it was hilarious and it seems that they didn't do any other horror riffs after that. And that's a perfect genre to plug away from.

And I wish people would move away from a good move = bad riff mentality, I'm pretty sure that rule has been violated enough times that it no longer can be considered valid.

I can only speak for myself, and I can honestly say I didn't think the riffs based on good movies (Memento, Iron Man etc) are as enjoyable as the ones based on turkeys (Star Trek V, Roadhouse, I am Legend, The Matrix Reloaded).

I'm not saying it's impossible to make a good riff about a good movie, but I will say that choosing a movie that actually has something worth mocking will improve the odds.

I just watched a RiffTraxed Battlefield Earth and it really brought me back to the MST3K days. I have a question about one of the riffs though. For those interested in trying out the iRiffs, word a warning: don't touch the Spider-Man cartoon ones.

Basically, some guy posted twenty Spider-Man cartoon parodies on the site for a dollar each. The sample shows it as a 30 second Fensler Film/Juggernaut Bitch knockoff with Spider-Man instead. Which I suppose could be decent for a full on episode at that price, depending on your taste.

Only for that dollar, you're getting 30 seconds of the audio from that sample. You're supposed to find the episode off YouTube, find the specific scene and watch it that way. Only because he messed with the footage, it's impossible to sync up.

So he's giving away something for free and then asking you to pay him a dollar to recreate it with pieces that don't fit.

I have to admit, the small section introducing the Dark Knight Riff is pretty hilarious.

quote:

If you can spare a minute, think back on the greatest work of cinema that you have ever seen. Did you think about The Dark Knight? No? Then you are a moron. Because while you were out doing whatever it is morons do...demolition derbies or...croquet, (we wouldn't know, we loved The Dark Knight), The Dark Knight pimp-slapped Andy Dufresne, spat in the Godfather's face and gave Charles Foster Kane a big ol' wedgie on its way to becoming the greatest movie of all time.

All this in spite of the bat suit causing our hero to grumble like the offspring of Tom Waits and Cookie Monster. There is nothing at all silly about that. We here at RiffTrax regret even having to point out that he sounds like your Great Aunt Vivian sending you out for her third pack of Pall Malls of the day. Because The Dark Knight is not just a superhero movie. It's a gritty crime drama about political corruption and the choices men make that just happens to involve a superhero. A superhero millionaire that dresses as a bat whose voice sounds like your cat heaving up a hairball into your slippers who battles a guy with half a face named Two-Face.

Despite all this, Mike, Kevin and Bill are ready to take on...(reverent pause)...The Greatest Movie of All Time.*

*Source: The Internet

It reminds me of the thread we had a while back in which people were debating whether or not Dark Knight should get the best picture Oscar. And all the hyperbole remarks being made by some of the faithful.

I have no problem with their riffs of decent films. I loved the Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and Top Gun riffs. It's obviously harder to poke fun at a 'good' movie, but I'd like to think they only release riffs that they think are decent, not just those that make them money. I really can't think of a single track in my library that I was 100% disappointed with. Obviously I prefer some to others, but overall it has been a good run.

The only one I didn't particularly care for was Cloverfield. I can't blame Mike and company because they had a total piece of poo poo movie to work with.

Otherwise, bad 80s movies (which I would never have watched before) like Road House and Top Gun are very rewatchable.

It was almost a monthly ritual for my friends and I to have a "<Food Item> and Rifftrax" night, so I've bought a lot of these.

Aeon Flux- This was probably my least favorite... even they couldn't make fun of it, it was that bad.

Casino Royale- A solid riff. Not spectacular as other riffs but several laugh-out-loud moments.

DareDevil- This was the first Riff bought and I loved it. Such a flawed movie, such a spot-on riff.

The Day After Tomorrow- Nothing particularly funny in this track... sometimes the riffs feel like they're set on "cruise control."

I Am Legend- I remember the riffers dropping a lot of names whose references seemed outdated, but I guess if you had heard of these people it would have been hilarious

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull- Has already been said before but a mediocre riff. It started out great but then lost all of its steam... towards the end it picked up more but not enough to redeem it.

Raiders of the Lost Ark- I really liked this riff. I know some people are against Rifftrax's making fun of good movies, but the convoy chase scene through the desert alone made it for me.

Road House- Awesome riff Buy this one. Beef.

Spider-Man- Not that great. Another "cruise control" rifftrax.

Spider-Man 2- Awesome riff. Every Aunt May scene left my friends and I nearly crying laughing.

Spider-Man 3- Awesome riff. This one is par with Spider-Man 2. Exactly what this movie deserves. Plus, James Lileks was an tremendous guest Riffer.

Star Wars Ep 1- Strong beginning but the towards the end it was nothing but incessant jokes about the strange planet names. We get it, Naboo sucks. Continually mistaking its name for "Teddybear Candycane Gumdrop" didn't get any funnier after the first 20 times.

Star Wars Ep 2- More of the "weird planet name" jokes and that's about it. Oh, and Chad Vader was useless.

Star Wars Ep 3- Great Star Wars prequel riff. Once you get to Mustafar it's GOLD.

Terminator 3- Cruise control. I found myself paying more attention to the movie than to the riff.

Top Gun- Very good riff. My favorite gags are when the commentators extend a line of dialogue and there were plenty of those in this one.

Transformers- Awesome riff. Don't you hate when your movie forgets about you?

Troll 2- Awesome riff. Unlike Chad Vader, Lowtax solidly contributed to the humor (that is, he actually said things)

300- Good riff. Worth buying, but I think the scene in the VOD on the site may have been my favorite part.
