XJ headlight wiring harness upgrades, what can I be told about them ? Looking to buy a kit, but have also read about some weird issues if I have the factory foglights option.
?Basically my headlights are dim as poo poo even though im seeing 14+ volts from the alternator.

I believe you can either get brighter model bulbs or there is a wiring harness for HID lights.

I know what you mean though, I sometimes have to drive around with my brights on to see poo poo

If you feel like getting your hands dirty heres a decent write up on how to make one yourself, dosnt seem to hard.

WIth that you can run some decent lights without melting your harness. I dont know of any off the shelf kits tho

The off-the-shelf kits are $18 and come with relays and everything. I might just get one, and take out the factory foglight harness, and rewire it with 10g wire so that it wont melt under heavy watts.

http://fitchva.com/jeep/?p=57 - an excellent how-to

He talks about the foglight problem at the bottom, Its basically comes down to the way the car senses the highbeams turned on creates a loop that doesn't allow the highbeam relay to turn off. Either pull the foglight relay from the factory underhood panel or just turn the lights off and back on after using the highbeams.

Where can I find a pre-made headlight harness?? Where do I begin looking. Google and eBay are flooding me with rice. Any particular vendors handy?

Don't worry; i got sideswiped by some jackass and sheered the right side off clipping a barrier. Had the bumper for a month and it's toast.

No other damage tho.

The jeep forums are all giving good reviews about this one. One could argue that it would cost more to build it yourself. http://www.eautoworks.com//product-eAutoWorkscom-189849.htm

Apparently the kit is slightly long, so snipping the wires and resoldering might be needed or you can just loop the wires or whatever.

Once you've upgraded the harness, get these, which are super bright but with a sharp cutoff so that won't blind drivers: http://cgi.ebay.ca/79-01-JEEP-CHERO...1713.m153.l1262

I have these in my cherokee, I absolutely love them. Even with the stock harness the difference in light output is night and day.

I went and ordered the upgraded harness. I held off on ordering new headlights.

I am undecided between the Euro code lights with 55w bulbs, or the 100w bulbs instead, or euro lights with hid bulbs (the real ones)

I'm curious to see if the hid lights are cut off with the euro lenses, if they get cut off sharply so that others don't get blinded, I might go for them.

The tranny fluid in my 98 Cherokee was low so I put a quart in and now I'm above max. Can I risk damage by overfilling?

Also, anyone else have trouble getting the oil filter out from the bottom of an XJ? It was a kick in the nuts to have to get the filter out from the top when it was up on the ramps. Next time I'm going to try to change the oil without putting it on ramps, just parking it and sliding the pan under..

I don't think so. A lot of people claim that too much tranny fluid causes leaks, but it shouldn't be pressurized to do that. What does usually happen is the extra fluid gets vented out. I think people mistake that for leaks.

I over fill my Explorer sometimes and I get a little red trail for the first drive and that's it.

Here I am again, back with another problem on my 1990 Cherokee 4.0l. I took it in a couple weeks back to get the main driveshaft seal on the T-Case replaced (I've known about the very slow leak for the better part of a year, I've just been keeping tabs on the fluid level) and the shop told me I actually needed a $900 repair.

According to their writeup, the "syncro shift" in the T-Case is busted and needs replacement, which I assume means they have to remove the entire T-Case and open it up. This would explain the $600 worth of labor they're proposing. The shop said when they attempted to shift it into 4x4, they heard a sound that indicated this was the problem. The only thing I'm questioning is that they claimed the truck wouldn't even shift into 4x4, but when I took it and drove it home, I tested it and it shifted into 4lo no problem. I'm not in any place to question their authority, considering they are a shop that specializes in Jeep repairs and I am a no talent rear end clown, but it just seems sketchy to me.

Is this a common problem? Would the T-Case still possibly shift into 4x4 if the syncro shift thingy needed to be replaced? Does this seem fishy to anyone else? Thanks!

If you were going to Line-X a Cherokee, is there anything you can do about the back seat that folds down? It seems stupid to leave that as carpet, but it looks like if you cut the carpet off the back of the seat then all the upholstery would fall off.

Could you Line-X up the the back of the back seat and then screw a sheet of thick black plastic to the back of the seat?

Wait, are you going to use the back seat at all ever again? In that case, take out the rear bench, sell it on Craigslist, and Line-X the whole loving mess.

GUESS: They are probably going to adjust the shifter linkage and charge you $900 for it. It's common to have to adjust the T-case linkage every once in a while on Cherokees/Wranglers. Linkage bushings also go out after a while too, or get dry and brittle if 4wd is rarely used. In fact, I need to adjust mine too.

If you can test your 4wd somewhere, do this. Start moving at a relatively slow pace in 2wd, then shift into 4wd high. If the shift is smooth and engages without any resistance or loud BANG noises, the T-case synchro is fine. If you have repeated difficulty engaging 4wd high, then their claims might have some validity. Or, your T-case fluid just might be low.

Well I took her down to the local mud hole and did the tests you recommended and, as far as I can tell, nothing is amiss. The shifting was fluid and I heard no strange noises. I've spent nearly $5k at this shop on a truck worth a fraction of that amount and this is going to be very disheartening if they're trying to hustle me out of another grand. Regardless, I've described all of this to my father on the phone who's a mechanic and he's given me the go ahead to just continue driving the thing like I would anyway. Thanks for the help. I'm going to take it down to Meineke and have them do the seal for about $60.

Well, I couldn't resist any longer. The wife and I went out and picked up an 09 JK Unlimited, got a great deal. Thing is, we went for pretty much the base model, I don't need the rubi and anything else I want I figured I can add.

My wife isn't terribly tall so she has a tough time getting into the thing. That means the first thing I need to get is some sort of side step/rock rail. Anyone have suggestions on something decent looking but not terribly expensive? I've been thinking about getting something simple like this just for the time being: http://www.quadratec.com/products/12112_51X_PG.htm . Maybe getting something more rugged later on down the road.

Even if you did need a new transfercase, you should just go to the local junkyard and grab one from an 87-90 cherokee for $100. The majority of cherokees out there have rarely been put into 4wd anyway, and you can swap one out yourself in a couple of hours with like... a 5/16 socket and a 9/16 socket.

As long as the bumper is set up properly for mounting points and the hitch is welded all the way though it shouldn't be an issue.

I stumbled across this guy's site who does some really great work and will fab up just about anything you want (to avoid that mass produced cookie-cutter look). Just ordered some SuperRails and the SlikRok winch bumper from him; he's great to deal with.

I talked him down to $12500 with a 1year warranty or $12000 without, so I didn't make much progress on the price. The private party price on edmunds and kbb says $10500. Please let me know if I shouldn't post this here - I think it is okay per the FAQ, but will happily edit this if not. I also thought this would go better here than as a dedicated thread.

I posted a want to buy / trade ad in SA Mart for an LJ hard top - I currently have a soft top that I treat like a hard top (taken off when it warms up in lieu of a safari top, put on when it starts to get cold). I'd like to just go ahead and get a real hard top since I have storage room for it.

So, should I be leery of this one? Should it be cheaper? Do you think it'll run well at that age, with that mileage? Is the rust a big enough deal to warrant a big price discrepancy or not buying it at all?
