I'm going to be out in San Francisco in a few weeks. I've been living out of my car the past two years and the last thing I have to do is drive up the California/Oregon/Washington coast and then I've covered the whole United States, except for Hawaii. I'm very excited because I've heard San Fran is AMAZING.

I have a question, and I do apologize if it has been covered in this thread. But at the beginning of the movie 40 Days and 40 Nights, and in the Where the Hell is Matt? videos, there is a really neat shot of the people in front of a picnic table with the Golden Gate bridge in the background. I have tried to find on Google where that is and I can not for the life of me figure it out. Does anyone here know the specific place I am talking about? The place I am specifically looking for is located at time 3:14 in this video here. Thanks in advance, SF goons! :)

My mom and I are gonna be in the city on the 18th, going to UCSF medical center. We'll have some time available later in the day (after 5ish), and I have no idea what's in that general area around Golden Gate Park. Ideally, I'd be looking for an activity to take up a couple hours and a place to eat, I just don't know where to start looking. Please help me goons!

Fake edit: checked the funcheap link...looks like the only event they list in that area on the 18th closes at 5 :(

you can actually inflate your scrote pretty safely with sterile saline, syringes, needles, and aseptic technique. its a niche kink iirc

the saline just slowly gets absorbed into your blood but in the meantime you got a big round smooth distended nutsack

I live off of the N-Judah (streetcar line that goes by UCSF) and there's plenty of odds and ends all along the N. Around Ninth and Judah is a pretty hopping neighborhood, with restauraunts, bars, shops, coffee, etc. At the end of the line is Ocean Beach. The beach is spartan but lots of good peoplewatching, and a handful of restaurants nearby.

There are two museums nearby in Golden Gate park:

* California Academy of Sciences
* De Young fine arts museum

There's also the arboretum which is free and beautiful.

Foodwise, the following have my recommendation:

* Milano Pizza
* Little Bangkok (family run hole in the wall Thai)
* Arizmendi Bakery (socialist worker owned amazing bakery)
* Pacific Catch (decent bar/seafood)
* Hotei / Ebisu (great sushi / ramen soup)
* Yellow Submarine (Boston-style sub sandwiches that are equivalent to two meals probably)

Hopefully that gives you an idea of some stuff to checkout while you're here. Feel free to ask more as (you can probably tell) I live in the neighborhood.

I second all of digital-entropy's Inner Sunset food suggestions, and will add:

-Tasty Curry (pakistani/indian food, really good, really cheap. A much better choice than nearby Naan 'n' Curry)
-Pluto's (pretty much american/comfort food)
-Park Gyros (middle-eastern/greek food)
-Yummas (middle-eastern food. Better than Park Gyros in my opinion, but they're both good)
-Kiki (the cheap sushi option, just a couple buildings down from Ebisu. It's actually a pretty good place. Ebisu is being remodeled right now anyways though)
-Toasties (pretty good sandwiches)
-Roxie Market (the best Sandwiches. not exactly a restaurant though)
-La Fonda (decent mexican food...their burritos aren't the best though)
-Darla's (american food and breakfast and stuff)
-Hahn's Hibachi (Korean Food)

I'll second all of yours but this one. If you want Indian food, I really recommend Masala, which next to Bistro 9 & Park Chow. I went there once, and they sat us at a table next to a closet, which they then kept needing access to. They also didn't bring us a couple sides we ordered, and failed to mention that we had to get our own tea. All of the trouble and it isn't really any cheaper.

(fyi, I refer to Naan and Curry as Naan and Slurry, because my one experience there was just about that)

I know, just one bad experience, but it was enough to turn me away in the future.

All in all, you really can't go wrong in the neighborhood.. which reminds, me how could I forget this one? On Irving street between 10th and 11th is New Eritrea, which serves Eritrean / Ethiopean cuisine. Highly recommend it, because they're a rare find. No utensils -- the food is served on a large piece of bread called Injara, and you also get one to tear off small pieces to grab some of the food with.

I work at UCSF so in addition to the campus we eat out a lot:

- Ebisu is okay, I think prices are better at TEN, and quality is better at Koo (only open for dinner, and just sashimi, rolls, appetizers). If you can, don't eat at You See Sushi; the staff is great though. Don't eat Kiki's.
- For Thai we usually go to Marnee Thai.
- For Vietnamese food I would skip Minh Trin and go to Dragonfly on 9th and Judah/Parnassus.
- Lime Tree on 4th? is Indonesian food. The pancake with curry dipping sauce (the name escapes me right now...) is great, also corn fritters.
- At Pluto's their garlic curly fries and onion rings are really great. The salads are fresh.
- New Eritrea was great, much better than the Ethiopian place in Haight Ashbury. Still not as spicy as it could be.
- Tart to Tart has good cakes and tarts. Chocolate cake and their fruit tart is a good bet. Coffee a bit watery.
- Yummas was pretty underwhelming with thick pitas and not spicy enough meat.
- Hahn's Habachi is okay, but I would suggest getting the sizzling bimbimbop and gyoza only. Their BBQ plates have a weird gravy that is not Korean.
- Chocolate crepe at the crepe store next to Naan N Curry. I like Naan N Curry though. It's oily and strong and delicious like Shalimar.
-Azimendi Bakery has delicious cheese bread. The cheesy bread stick however is very, very crunchy.
- Pomelo's is a noodle place on 4th and Parnassus. It serves Asian noodles (my friend always recommend the seared tuna) as well as a rotating noodle dish (I love the stewed lamb with couscous).

You can see why I have gained 10lbs at my job in 2 years

As for spending an hour or two--if you can't make the museums, you might consider just walking around the park. Or just stroll around inner sunset around 9th and Irving. There are a bunch of little shops--second-hand clothing stores, little knick-knacks, shoe stores, groceries...

If you guys like Eritrean/Ethiopian food, you absolutely have to try Assab, on Geary just a couple blocks west of Masonic. I've been to a lot of Ethiopian restaurants in Portland, LA, Berkeley, and SF, and this place just destroys all of them. The prices are very reasonable and their food is unbelievable.

I always wondered about that place. I gotta try it out. Anyone ever been to that chinese place on Judah, between 9th and 8th? It's right by the video store and the liquor store on 9th. It looks pretty much like average, cheap fast food style stuff, but drat can that be good sometimes (and very bad too, which is why I'm asking).

If we're thinking of the same place (one small row of crappy tables, cheap as hell), then it's decent for what it is. I've only ever had the dim sum there, but it works if you want something like that but don't want to travel all the way over to Clement.

Yeah, they're pretty good. I think most of their business is take out though, because there's rarely anyone in there. I'll admit I didn't try it for a long time because of that. I also need to check out San Tung sometime, there's almost always a line of asians standing outside which seems like a good sign.

So now that Inner Sunset eats were covered, how about the outer?

I went to dinner the other night at Tazaki Sushi on 39th and Judah. It's a smaller place with fresh fish, and your classic other Japanese cooked foods...super cheap. I got one roll and a combination that had tonkatsu, teriyaki beef, and kara age. It also came with rice, a salad, and started off with miso soup and edamame. my bill came out to 17 dollars! The best part though is that I live a block away and the place seems like they have regulars chattin with the chef and management. I think I found "my spot"

I've been to Old Mandarin. It's a Beijing-Islamic place, so skip the seafood and delicate sauces, and eat beef hotpot and sesame pancakes. Their hotpot is a clear broth, and you dip the beef into a sesame-soy paste. My Beijing friend says it's very authentic (I tend to eat more southern China-Islamic).

Tthere is also handmade dumplings at http://www.kingofchinesedumpling.com/english/contact.htm
The dumplings are smaller than the store I go to in San Jose/Cupertino, but the prices are really good, and nothing beats handmade frozen dumplings :)

As for Kiki, I just had a bad experience there for one lunch and didn't care enough to return, since the area has so many other Japanese restaurants. I had tuna nigiri (or was it sashimi?) and some udon. The udon tasted like those packages you can get at Nijiya, except they overcooked it so it was limp. Tuna was sliced badly so it lost a lot of its texture and taste, and I remember it being slightly warm, probably from too hot rice.

There is also some Chinese grocery store on 9th that serves roasted duck, BBQ pork, chicken, and zongzi (bamboo leaf wrapped rice with pork). I saw some people going in and their selection looked good, and was highly anticipating Cantonese lunches. Alas, their duck was all fat and bones, pork was greasy and don't have enough roasted taste, and the zongzi was pretty much just hard sticky rice with peanuts and one little sliver of pork :( The packaged snacks in there were an okay selection for the small store, though.

I'll try out Nan King Road Bistro. From Yelp it seems like a Vietnamese-Chinese Asian fusion place (raspberry mango chicken??) but maybe it will surprise me!

Oh, ok. I've never had a problem with Kiki, especially seeing as it is so cheap, it's seemed pretty good to me for the price (I've never gotten udon there though). I can see how they might be inconsistent for the same reason though (cheapness). They actually have another restaurant, Kitaro, which is at 23rd and Geary or somewhere around there. The menus, prices and food are basically identical with just a few differences.

Also thanks for reminding me of Old Mandarin. I had heard of it a year or two ago but completely forgot about it.

Pluto's insider information--

Yes, the secret to their "Saturn's garlic potato rings":

All it is are frozen coated curly fries tossed with minced raw garlic and parsley.

Oh and their homemade spicy BBQ sauce? KC Masterpiece + Red Pepper Flakes

Shall I keep ruining the dream? Ok!

Low-Fat Garlic Mayo Best Foods + minced Garlic

Orbital Onion Rings? Sysco

But those aren't that big of a deal. I still love it (as shown by my loyalty.........)

+Pro Tips:
you can get a half order of onion rings and half garlic fries. same price, extra delicious.
for those of you who can't wait more than a year for the day after Thanksgiving leftovers, try requesting a turkey sandwich with gravy, cranberry sauce, etc etc...the works. We did it occasionally at my location, but I'm not sure if they'll let you do that here.
I'm not sure if they were ever on the menu, or if it was a seasonal thing but I remember keeping some good Vanilla Ice Cream for rootbeer floats with that tasty Thomas Kemper's brand.

I don't know what made me write this novel about Pluto's just now but...maybe it's because I haven't been there even though I pass by it every day on the N and I need to get my fix by talking about it.
