http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/wtf-monster-manual.php?page=1 I've always liked mocking things, and hope to see more from this series in the future. Wait, isn't this just Fashion SWAT: DnD?

Loving Steve "Malak" Sumner's comeback to the frontpage. Dudes Who Need Ninjitsu Moves Done on Them from last Friday was pretty awesome too.

Fun article. I liked having a pure straight man for once in one of these S.W.A.T.-esque articles.

Holy poo poo, the AD&D Fiend Folio is a loving treasure trove of ridiculous monsters. I remember reading a review of it in an old issue of Dragon Magazine from the early 80s. Everyone sort of collectively went WTF even when it first came out. Stuff like the speculation the book makes that sheet phantoms (which are utterly ridiculous in their own right) might actually be an undead form of the much beloved lurker is fantastic. It shows that they're really thinking this stuff out thoroughly. There's so much potential material left in the original monster manual I look forward to as well. It's really the little things that I find hilarious, like why are dolphins lawful good alignment instead of neutral? Um, so they have a functioning society or what gives? I just generally enjoy the fashion SWAT type articles, and insulting things from when they were terrible creations of tired nerds is awesome.

Ha ha ha, so funny! EPG and Malak making fun of retro D&D poo poo? All I can say is "finally"! Does Malak really not get paid? That makes me so sad

At Something Awful, I expect something described as WTF to completely break my mind, and this did not, so I felt a little let down. Does this mean there's something wrong with the article or me? The commentary was still very funny and it's good to see Steve back.

I absolutely loved this article! I grew up on D&D, so I was really excited to see an article that drew on some of the stuff I remember seeing in my Dad's books. I agree with some of the other posters, too - the confused outsider of Zack was the perfect foil to Steve's fantasy-inoculated gamer. I also loved the smoking crab video.

I think the madness ramps up in the second part. If we do more of these the other monster manuals will be a focus, but we also want to cover a bunch of old, stupid source books and adventures and stuff like that.

This was great. Roleplaying games are always full of stupid-rear end monsters.

I had this book, though it had a pretty impressive dragon along with some Pegasi on its cover (3rd edition?) and would read it religiously when I was in first grade or so. That was about 25 years ago. My god. While I found some monsters strange it never occurred to me that the sea-lion and the sea-horse were based on puns. I'm not sure but I think they changed the sea-horse to something else in the German edition because it would have been too close to the word the pun is based on otherwise. The article was neat and the idea is even better but I would have preferred it, had the focus been more on the subject than on those commenting, so it would be a little more like SWAT in that respect. Still a great read.

I paged through some sourcebooks and monster manuals for other RPGs, like Palladium, and there really isn't the same level of crazy involved. Especially compared to the Lurker.

Well, it was based on this dude, which goes to show that actual mythology can be just as ridiculous as nerd mythology.

I have to say, Steve is starting to sound a little like Karl Pilkington in these two articles, what with his absolute belief in every story he reads somewhere on the internet. Which is fine with me since Karl Pilkington never fails to crack me up.

The "Et tu, Peryton?" line made me laugh harder than I have in months. I look forward to seeing more of these. I agree that the 1st edition modules are prime fodder for more articles. I've got a few of them I'll have to look through. The rot grub commentary got me thinking on one of my favorite aspects of AD&D. The books basically outright encourage the dungeon master to break the players' balls at every opportunity. I can't remember if it was in the DM guide or a Dragon Magazine article written by Gygax on how to deal with new players at the table who aren't accustomed to table-top games. He said something along the lines that the DM should go out of his way to kill off the new player the first few sessions so he knows what to expect from the game and drive home the life/death nature of the game. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons cultivated a type of player vs. GM mentality that I think is really missing from modern systems.
