I took on a rescue side quest just yesterday that for some reason, when completed, it re-set the behavior of everyone in Arx, the guards, Lunshire, etc. all refer to me as though they've met me for the first time. The guards would then attack me if I entered the royal area, making further progress useless. They're the akbaa stones. There are five of them scattered across the entire game. There's no marker, pointer, or location. The xbox version is relatively bug free but it removes the backpack for some reason.

OP updated. And I was about to say...no mention of the new publisher yet in here? I have a soft spot for Megarace since it was one of the very first PC games I ever played, and Megarace 2 was interesting too. I'd say they're definitely worth the $3 each if you're into silly, lighthearted games. Megarace 3 (MR3 or whatever the gently caress it's called) is a piece of poo poo, though. Megarace was that futuristic car racing game framed as a game show, right? Oh man, I spent days playing that. I never even knew there were sequels!

Holy poo poo! Megarace. I also played the poo poo out of that game. As I recall, it's basically just one of those games where the video plays over your car moving back and forth, but it was great. The frame story of the game was pretty awesome.

I've played a bit of Arx Fatalis now, about to enter the 4th dungeon level, but is the magic system supposed to suck so extremely? Only a fraction of the gestures I do are recognized, and it's a pain in the rear end to recreate the quickspells every time you use them. I also seem to use my sword more than my spells for the most part. Do any of you have hints for making the magic user experience more tolerable, does spells get better and more useful later in the game, or should I just reroll as a warrior type instead? Apart from that, the game is very good. I am very impressed with how much they have managed to pack in just the three levels I've seen so far, and it really feels like an Ultima Underworld game where someone took all the game text and just did a word-replace on 'Avatar'.

I always found better to make a hybrid character in Arx, warrior/mage, thief/mage, that sort of thing, but never full blown mage. there are some very usefull spells, like the one that lights everything purple to you can see where you're going without having to light a torch

I was just thinking about Startopia. Not sure who holds the rights, though. It'd be a perfect game for this, having been under appreciated when it first came out, but being patched a bit to allow for custom maps and more options, and for $10 it's a great choice. I got the CD version a while back from Amazon, and it's such a fun game in the vein of Dungeon Keeper and Theme Hospital.

Do any of you have hints for making the magic user experience more tolerable, does spells get better and more useful later in the game, or should I just reroll as a warrior type instead? Magic get powerful really quickly (especially as soon as you nab the fireball and this speed boosting spell) but like all RPG's it's an exponential growth. I recommend a hybrid mage/warrior. Keep your strength high enough to wear light armor and wield a sword and basic shield and by the time you finish the goblin caves quest you'll have enough runes to give you defensive and offensive spells that are pretty damaging. I couldn't imagine completing the game without magic. There's a lot of areas with tough enemies (like liches) that are immune to most normal damage. The magic in the game is also really cool to cast like slow dowing time, levitation, and this spontaneous combustion spell. I also liked casting that light fire spell for no other reason than it's cool to make fires spring up on random torches. EDIT: I forgot, you want to eventually have strength around 15 by the end of the game (please do a google search before quoting me on this). You pick up something called ylside armor which is the best stuff in the game, it's relatively light, and gives you a massive stat boost.

I really liked Rise of the Triad when I was like 12 years old. I think a lot of it had to do with the gibs and the weird sense of humor. Is it worth getting again, or should I just let my fond memories be my last dealings with it? It's on sale still, I think.

It was one of my favorite shooters back in the mid-90's and it's every bit of fun today as it was then...well, except for the violence being a bit tame by today's standards. There's even awesome Windows ports that work great and make the game look even better , such as WinRott and GLRott, found here! For $4.49 or even the full $5.99, I highly recommend it. gently caress, I still have my CD-ROM I paid $45 for when it was a new release and I still think it was worth it.

So I finally figured out how to fix the drat rainbow effect on Fallout 1 & 2. To do it, I installed these two mods: SFall and the High Resolution Patch 2.0a. After installing these you simply set it to 16 bit in the options and/or Directx9 mode and the rainbow is gone and won't ever come back! Huzzah!

The reccomendations for Startopia really can't be repeated often enough. Don't even wait for it to turn up on GoG - I managed to pick up a second-hand copy for about £5 last year. It's still a great game to this day, and it still looks really good even now. The mixture of smooth animations, fun character designs and a really smooth camera/interface all come together nicely. I honestly think that this could be sold brand new today, albeit at a budget price. And if you throw the Unofficial (it's by one of the original developers, but he did it on his own time) patch at it, it gets even better, as it adds a not-unimpressive shadowing engine, which was too much for most PCs of the time, but is no effort for modern machines. It even supports widescreen (well, the polygon aspect ratio is off, but the 2d elements remain correct) and multi-monitor (!!!) setups. That game had features years before their time. Edit: It just occured to me just how far ahead of its time it was - it's eight years old now. Impressive. Dominic White fucked around with this message at 00:00 on May 5, 2009 |
