If nothing else, it would be nice if people would only vote on games that are actually difficult to run on modern systems. Games like Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 can be bought off eBay for very little, and they run fine in Vista.

edit: Oh man, I would love to see a working version of Mech Warrior II running on Vista or even XP.

Hmm, I can't find Planescape Torment for anything less than €23 on ebay, and most are around 30-40. Where are you getting it for 'very little'?

Well, don't I look stupid :(. I remember seeing jewel case versions in stores a few years ago for around $10. I assumed they would be even cheaper on eBay.

Still, I would prefer to see the GoG team work primarily on games that are either impossible to run on modern systems or take a lot of work to run properly. eBay prices are often surprisingly high, but I'm willing to pay $30-40 for a good game, whether it was made today or ten years ago.

Silent Hunter 3 is a very good game, especially with fan mods. It's much better than Silent Hunter 2. If you can get SH3 through steam for cheaper than you can get SH2 then definitely go for it. It's a pretty great submarine simulation game.

Well, you are like the 5th person to say that exact same thing in this thread. However, you make a good point and it bears repeating. Although, I think there are differences insofar as thinking of an ideal Doom 3 I would not envision a game like Painkiller. I do think Painkiller is probably what would have happened if Doom, Quake, and Unreal had an unholy child. I usually like deeper, slower paced FPSs, but poo poo Painkiller is a metric assload of fun.

Painkiller is way more linear than Doom but it definitely does the "shooting a hundred guys a minute" thing better than any other game in recent memory.

The only reason you wouldn't think Doom was linear is that it makes you wander around and hunt for key cards. It's not like you ever had a choice of where to go.

Painkiller just avoids that whole issue and gives you a poo poo ton of enemies to destory. :black101:

Perfect for getting that last bit of food from across the table.
Painkiller is an entire game composed of

Enter obviously-going-to-close-behind-you door
Door closes behind you
Shoot shitloads of monsters
Repeat

Don't get me wrong, this is awesome in Painkiller (a game which you should buy if you haven't already), but it's... less than I'd expect from Doom.

It's a good game, it's a lot of fun (barring a couple of kind of lovely levels near the beginning), but if that's all you want from The Real Doom 3, you wanted something that honestly would have been pretty disappointing next to Doom 1 and 2 (albeit closer in spirit to those games).

Well if there's one thing you can say about Painkiller is that it doesn't try to be anything it's not. I agree that for all intents and purposes it could have just warped you to the next level rather than making you walk down some hallway to have a door closed behind you, but it's a small issue. I don't think Painkiller is ashamed of being an unadulterated murder-fest.

You're right that Doom at least should have aspired to more. Personally I think Doom 3 should have been a slightly dumbed down version of SS2 with the RPG elements removed but still with the intense psychological thrill. Obviously it wasn't there.

So you think Doom 3 should have been Bioshock but better? :v:

But really, Painkiller has more to do with Doom than SS did. Doom is about killing lots of dudes and being a badass. SS, while awesome, is not really about that.

edit: and finding secrets, Doom is also about finding secrets.

I agree with this. Doom should be an action game with horror elements. Doom 3 was a horror game with action elements.

Again, I think Painkiller is an awesome game, I just think people sell it a little high.

Mechwarrior II (even the 3dfx version) is pretty easy to get working in WinXP/Vista. It doesn't look as good as you remember, but it still plays great. I keep hoping Terra Nova would find it's way on GOG, because that game never got the love it deserved (though PC Gamer did some nice articles on it back in the day).

Playing through Under a Killing Moon for the first time in years. It's funny because I had just ripped all of my UAKM and Pandora Directive discs a few weeks ago with the intention of playing through them again. It took less time to download the game from GOG than it did to rip everything and configure my dosbox.conf :(

The gameplay has aged really well and I'm having a blast resolving these mysteries. Easily one of my most favorite adventure games ever (though Pandora Directive really is better in every way possible).

I'd kill for Dungeon Keeper 2, but unfortunately that game has serious issues running under modern operating systems. A few months ago, a friend and I tried to get it running for some multiplayer and we had to resort to a Windows 2000 virtual machine. It can be run natively in Vista, but only in software mode. It's also incredibly unstable under Windows XP.

I'd love the older stuff too, though.

That's a massive understatement... There was a problem with the original Postal, where turning left with the keyboard didn't work under Windows XP. This has been a known issue for years, and Running With Scissors' official response was apparently :effort:, so they never fixed it.

GOG wrote a loader that makes it work correctly, and makes the game playable with the keyboard again.
