FTL in LOGH involves "star to star" gravity well hopping, which is why they have to use the "corridor" paths to travel between the two spiral arms.
Haha, this is exactly the explanation that I worked out too! I figure that the reactors on the ships need to be in a gravity well of how-ever-many pico-newtons (or whatever unit of measurement gravity uses... I never took physics :eng99: ) to maintain stability, making the "barrier" around the corridor is just the threshold between strong enough and kabloowie.

It's more that the corridor is surrounded by unstable space (ie, black holes, nebulae) and if you travel outside that corridor, you enter into the region dangerous to ships and blam.

Okay, question. I can tell people are really into this show for the characters and politics and all, but I just watched the first episode and that was seriously the worst loving excuse for military tactics I've ever heard of. It's like, we're supposed to think this Lohengramm guy is brilliant, but the actual battle boiled down to "we have this much smaller fleet in a textbook pincer formation. Let's sit here and NOT SURROUND HIM while he picks us off one by one!"

Is this typical, or do the tactics advance beyond the first-grade level at any point in the series? LoGH sounds cool, but I won't be able to take 100+ episodes of crap like that if I'm expected to take it seriously.

If it wasn't clear, both sides are essentially run by morons with guys like Yang and Reinhard rising through the ranks to eventually buck the trend. There are various reasons they are in such a state, but I think it boils down to "a war lasting 150 years spanning an entire arm of a galaxy and involving billions of deaths with no significant hope of clear victory from either side has led to an acceptance of the status quo with minor victories ebbing back and forth between the two." So officers rise through the ranks less on ability and more on prestige and connections since neither side is really making an effort to "win" the war.

Also make sure you watch the movie "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars" first, since it chronologically occurs before the first episode AND was released before it as well.

Keep in mind, these fleets are thousands of ships big, millions of men staffing them. They're huge. Furthermore, they're not able to directly communicate and coordinate these fleets; communications are limited due to massive amounts of EMC. This why most fleet battles tend to, at the worst juncture, break down into "shooting ranges". How can you accurately coordinate massive fleets when you have to send shuttles to every ship in order to relay tactical commands? It takes hours for even BASIC fleet movements to occur. Reinhard and Yang's skill largely comes from them being able to use these fleet movements carefully and having staff which is very good at coordinating them, as well as being able to predict enemy fleet movements before hand.

To use episode one as an example, by the time Reinhard had started individually attacking the other fleets in the FPA formation, it was too late for them to actually do anything, and their coordination fell apart just because of how quickly Reinhard was going through; the weak inter-fleet communication, along with the bad battle formation, allowed Reinhard to make a massive coup despite having a much smaller force. It took them HOURS just to get over to him, and by then he had already wiped out the force he was attack, prompting him to be able to do the same all over again. Like Yang was saying in the episode, the FPA were relying too much on "WE GOTS MORE SHIPS THIS IS EASY", which would have worked if the enemy had the same mindset; Reinhard doesn't.

As Nate RFB said, however, in the beginning much of the enemy ARE stupid as hell. Both sides have an issue with nepotism and stupid concepts of "HONOR" and it basically results in millions of deaths every fleet battle because they're too used to having a GENTLEMAN'S BOUT and then being absolutely terrible in the process. However, as the series goes on all of those guys die off or are replaced by competent admirals who are constantly doing (relatively) complex fleet actions around each other.

As he said as well, you should watch the Movie first as well, and besides, the real draw for the series is the politics; the fleet battles are just frosting.

It's not a huge deal if you haven't seen the first movie first, in fact most of us here didn't see it until after the series because that's when it was fansubbed. It basically details an early operation in which Yang and Reinhard meet each other in battle. After all it was a little strange how they seemingly knew each other in episode 1. You can watch it whenever you want at this point I suppose.

Movie 2, "Overture to a New War", is more of a remake/retelling of the first two episodes, so again at this point you can watch it whenever. It hasn't been subbed by CA yet, though.

Nothing in the series takes place after the TV series. The series is it.

There are a bunch of direct-to-video prequels, but they were produced afterwards and are frankly not that worth watching unless you really want to see some early hijinks.

Movie 1 is a direct lead in to the TV series that was produced first as a pilot, so you should watch it.

Watching the movie later as a prequel is also nice because it's like Oh yeah, Kircheis. He was a really cool guy.
Which is a fitting way to wrap up a long series in which his death is the most significant event.

I'd argue that at least one other character's death is way, way more significant. Or at least it had more impact.

Ok, I was pretty pissed with the way Yang died. It was so loving predictable when Fork was killed instantly and the escort ship wanted to board Yangs ship. If only he didn't take those sleeping pills.

I'd disagree because if Kircheis hadn't died he would have been around to keep Reinhard from doing anything questionable and things would have gone much more smoothly. It's been a while since I've seen it so I'm fuzzy on what exactly I'm talking about, but I recall Kircheis' death changing the direction of the show more than Yang's.

I meant more of an impact to the audience. That season 1 death certainly may have done more to alter the course of the potential history of the show, but that other, later one is one that completely sucker punches the viewer.

and (big fat late-game spoiler)it doesn't really sucker punch you because they spoil it for you in the episode previous by saying "One has to wonder how much Julian would regret and agonize over his decision that day" or something like that, which is a definite "Yang Dies" hint. Honestly as good as the series was up til the end, and as much as I like Julian, the series kinda went downhill from this point

I mean sure, (later episode/ending spoilers)Reuental's Rebellion was nice, and Julian making a name for himself was too, and the final clusterfuck where Julian blitzkriegs his way onto the Brunhild, and OH YEAH JUST REMEMBERED, SCHENKOPP PULLING A DAVID AND GOLIATH BULLSHIT DEATH, all of that was great. But Yang was the everyman, albeit a brilliant tactical genius, but he was the best character, and they had to off'em. But I suppose it was required, since LOGH is pretty much Future History: The Anime, and can't just let the best characters survive or it'd be too cliche. However, Schenkopp's death was still cliche bullshit. If he's gonna die like that, just have it sever his spine and he goes down and thinks "heh...killed by a backstab, how pathetic" and dies, instead of the silly, albeit badass(but really not warranted in a show like LOGH), way he sat down and talked with the soldiers.
