We got some serious shit to discuss.

Alright, I've been trying like the Dickens to get Under a Killing Moon working, but it refuses to see that the files that are the discs are there. It keeps defaulting to my actual CD drive as opposed to the folder where the game is, and even if I go into the config files and edit it, it keeps overwriting the file to the drive. Any help? I already had Dosbox installed, but I haven't messed with it in a while, could it be some setting from that that the GoG DosBox is seeing and getting confused?

Blistering idiots.
So, the Topware catalog is on sale this week, for a grand total of 20% off, which just makes everything cost $4.79. Any comments on which games to pick up? I think consensus was good on Earth 2150. Can anyone comment on Knights and Merchants? Is it mostly economic, or focused on battles?

I never owned the full game, but I used to play the demo all the time when it was new, so I'd definitely recommend it. It's more economic in nature, although I think the battle part of it is pretty well done too (as far as I remember, at least). The economy part is a lot like the Settlers games.

I am interested in GOG, but I had a few questions:
1) I know it is DRM free, but does this mean I do not need to be online to play my games? This is important as many of the games I would like to buy are going onto machines with no internet access.
2) The versions of Fallout on GOG, are they already patched to the latest official versions? and also, are the timing bugs fixed? Specifically the counter as you walk from city to city. I had to download a separate patch for y disc versions.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It's the UK version of Fallout, so you will have to track down the "fix children" patch over at nma-fallout. Very important for Fallout 2.

Empire Earth: Gold Edition and Lords Of Magic: Special Edition are coming soon.

Avoid it. The game has such ridiculously slow moving enemies at the later stage of the game, that each mundane battle takes 10-15 minutes. There are a lot of these.

It was acceptable back in the 90s, but it's mind numbingly soul crushing now.

Posting to say I played the poo poo out of the demo, too. It was goddamn fun to figure things out (grapes make wine!) when I was a wee lad.

Also wondering if it's worth it for the full game?

Yes. Kinda old but tons of fun. I'm buying it when it comes out just to have it on GoG. Like Rise of Nations, though not quite as good.

"...creating a vision of the sort of society you want to have in miniature"
When playing a DosBox game that had 640x480 resolution, what are the best settings to use to ensure the best graphical quality? I was playing UAKM but changed it from fullscreen to window because the game was just too pixelated due to the size and resolution of my monitor. Windowed looks pretty good actually, but the size is kind of small. I'm going to play around with the various settings in the DosBox config file and see if I can get it better, but I was wondering if those who have had experience with DosBox could give me some tips.

edit: this seems to work pretty well

fullscreen=false
windowresolution=1024x728

I think running it fullscreen on a widescreen monitor screws with the visual quality, since the game was originally fullscreen.

edit: Playing around with it some more I got some good results with this

fullscreen=true
fullresolution=1920x1200
scaler=hq3x

This gives me full screen in 4:3, with the scaler helping to clean up some of the pixelation. Probably could be improved though

Careful, Port Royale 2 is on Steam as well for just 4 bucks. I discovered GOG today and decided it's pretty much the best netbook gaming site there is and bought Stronghold to start my collection. My next purchase will be Empire Earth when they release it, I never got around to playing that when it originally came out :shobon:

I own both and have played both extensively. They play somewhat similarly although there are important differences. However, owning both is a lot of genre overlap.

I personally prefer Port Royale 2 over Patrician III. First, the core of both games is ship based trading. They have roughly the same number of commodities you can trade, though I think PR2 has a little bit more. Both games scale up well as you become a mega-trader, but PR2 has a much better auto-trading system where you can set your fleets to specific runs. In the ship-based trading category PR2 has a very large advantage which is many more towns than P3. You can establish some pretty awesome and complex trading networks like wheel and spoke etc. People often claim that P3 is more complex than PR2 but I fail to see why. The only thing that P3 has that PR2 doesn't is off-continent trading routes.

Most importantly, PR2 has more to do once you get your trading system set up. If you want to become belligerent, PR2 has MANY more ships that you can buy or steal and then field either as an agent for war, or privateering for profit. I'm pretty sure P3 only has 4 ship types and only one of those is fit for battle. You will be hit by pirates a lot and you have limited means to fight back. In PR2 if one of your lines is getting hit by pirates you can escort them with some pretty fearsome warships, or hell just sail into the pirate hideout and take your revenge.

Finally, PR2's setting is just cooler. Unless you are a hardcore historian in love with the Hanseatic League you will probably find the ideas of multi-nation wars and pirate plundering on the high seas of the Caribbean more romantic.

Ah, yes. You can only have one ship at a time in fleet battles, but you can rotate the ships out for the next one whenever you want. It's a weird system that I never liked a whole lot, but even then it's ten times better than P3 which has a very wooden (no pun intended) ship combat interface.

After buying it, I'd say it is. The campaign's the typical sort where you gradually get access to more buildings and units, and has hilariously badly voiced narration. It's also got a single map mode though, where you just pick a map and play freely (obviously), so that's what you'll probably do most just to build and gently caress around. AI's completely retarded and combat isn't handled as well as I remembered, but that hardly seems important anyway.

Goddamn I suck at strategy games. Even playing on easy, Evil Genius is wearing me down. If I send more henchmen out to get money I end up with too much heat and too many agents poking around my base, and then the henchmen get offed in the field while I'm busy tending to the agents. If I don't send them, I sit around stabbing the occasional investigator but I'm stone broke.
