I'd like to start listening to more Bob Dylan. So far, I really enjoy the albums Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and Highway 61 Revisited. Can anyone recommend some of his stuff that is along that vein?

Well if you like highway 61 you should definatly pick up the other two of his 'holy trinity' of 60's albums, Blonde on Blonde and Bringing it all back home. For folkier stuff grab The Times are a Changin', by far the best of his early work. They're really all the canon albums he has, as his later output is very hit-and-miss, but Desire and Blood on the Tracks are still great albums if you're after a different kind of sound.

Once you get a handle on those I'd add The Basement Tapes, recorded with The Band (they're also worth a listen on their own, as they backed Dylan for many of his tours and include many of similar elements in their work; Before the Flood is a good live recording of Dylan with them), and John Wesley Harding, I think they're just as essential as those listed above. Nashville Skyline doesn't work for everyone but I'd say you should absolutely give it a shot. Dylan goes whole-hog on the country influences that have always been present in his work and adopts an unusual crooning voice you don't hear almost anywhere else in his body of work. Plenty of people hear songs off it and have no idea that it's Dylan.

You really can't go that wrong just starting with Highway 61 and moving slowly in either direction. It's not really until Self-Portrait or his first album that there's a record you don't need to hear, and Blood on the Tracks is maybe my favorite. But if you get really into him, there's plenty of great stuff later than that, also. Specifically, Time Out of Mind and Infidels really stand among his best, I think, although neither sounds like either of the ones you're starting from.

I'm looking for some more glitchy music kind of like Girl Talk's Unstoppable (although not neccessarily mashups, I've already checked the Girl Talk thread) or 65daysofstatic's Unrealased/Unreleasable stuff. I like Aphex Twin/Amon Tobin/Flashbulb/Enduser/Venetian Snares but I'm looking for something a bit different. Any suggestions?

Holy gently caress, these are some angry chicks. I am totally digging the girl-screaming. You might enjoy them as well, they're a lot like the stuff I posted earlier, just with chicks doing the screaming instead of dudes. Awesome stuff. Similarly, I used to listen to Kittie when I was a teenager, but haven't really heard much of their stuff since their album Oracle. But the first couple albums rocked pretty hard, so you may like that as well. I think I'm going to look into their newer stuff myself. In the last two weeks, I've literally doubled my winamp playlist with all kinds of awesome stuff based on recommends from this thread. Thanks guys, you rock

The 80s have always been my weak decade but I'm really starting to love a lot of bands I've heard like the Vaselines, the dB's, the Buzzcocks, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Minutemen, The Dream Syndicate, etc.- basically 80s college radio material. Please recommend as many bands as possible that sound even remotely like these groups, I'm loving them.

Just listing a bunch of obvious names, but the Go-Betweens, Pere Ubu, the Fall, Husker Du, maybe Minor Threat/Fugazi, Mission of Burma. Kind of embarassing to even type out but Sonic Youth if you haven't already. Although my favorite 80s college radio records were mostly made by REM and the Smiths cause I am a weak little man.

1) I'm looking for more bands like Mother Mother. I love them. 2) I'm looking for stuff like Miles Davis - What I Say (from the Live-Evil album). The guy has a zillion albums and they're all in different styles, but I want to hear more like that. 3) I'm looking for hip-hop stuff that is kind of innocuous, I don't really mean lyrically-speaking, but musically what I consider nicer, less in-your-face. I like stuff like Gorillaz and Deltron—not that it has to be some nerdy thing with lyrics about computers—but I'm not into the style of Del's solo stuff that I've heard, like Eleventh Hour. Sorry for being the pretentious guy who asks for three completely different things at once like he's so musically diverse, but I'm looking to expand in a few areas.

I'm looking for some very upbeat folk music in the vein of, say, Slavic folk or klezmer. A good example would be something like DeVotchKa's 'Death By Blonde'; never mind the animation. Instrumentation doesn't really matter, as well as any permeating rock or punk influence, just as long as there's a strong ethnic sound.

Recently I have been getting into Classical guitar and jazz guitar styled music. The only problem is I have no idea where to start with either as they are both huge in the sheer amount of artists and musicians. If someone could just give a few pointers on what to check out first I will do so and report back with reviews. The only memorable artist I have listened to has been John Williams thus far. Oh and the band Soil and "Pimp" Sessions (though they don't feature a guitarist, I HIGHLY enjoy this style of fast and furious jazz, so anything similar to that with or without a guitarist I would definitely eat up).

Well classical and jazz guitar are pretty different styles, but I'd recommend Andres Segovia for classical. My Favorite Works, Vol. 3 has some of my favorite pieces. You might also be interested in flamenco, which uses the same type of guitar, but also includes additional percussion and may or may not include vocals. Carlos Montoya is a good starting point. As far as jazz guitarists go, it depends on what you're looking for. For instance Django Reinhardt played acoustic guitar and has a more 'traditional' sound with some folk influences. Charlie Christian was one of the earliest jazz guitarists to go electric and his style lies between swing and bop.

If I've found that Nada Surf is one of the best bands I've listened to in a long time, what other bands similar to them would I like, in both musical and lyrical style? Okay, I need a driving playlist. I made a CD for my ~4 hour drive and just had it filled with a bunch of random tunes. But what I want for the drive back is really long music-heavy (as in, the lyrics take a backseat to the music) songs. The two obvious songs for me since I play way too much RB and GH are Through the Fire and Flames and Green Grass and High Tides. What are some other songs that are on the longer side with sick guitar riffs?

Thanks for all the recommendations - I've got a lot to check out. I'm generally not too keen on the reggae-ish stuff, although Cardopusher was pretty cool. I actually don't mind the more chilled out stuff, and the Flying Lotus stuff is pretty good on first listen. Electromeca is probably my favourite of the stuff so far though, exactly what I was looking for. And yes, I do like a fair amount of IDM but the reason I posted was to try and find glitchy stuff that wasn't IDM - and so far I've got a lot of ideas. edit (ironically): in case anyone else is looking for similar stuff, someone else recommended ediT to me, and his stuff is pretty awesome - Crying Over Pros for no reason is chilled out but really cool glitchy stuff while Certified Air Raid Material is synth heavy stuff with stop-start beats that seems sort of like a cross between mainstream d&b and hiphop. il_cornuto fucked around with this message at 21:30 on Jul 12, 2009 |

Errrr, so I know nothing about the four trillion different genres of metal, but I like a decent bit of melodic stuff, and basically anything with some sort of crazy guitar work in. A sample of the bands I listen to is Bal-Sagoth, Wintersun, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Protest The Hero, Opeth, In Flames, Mastodon etc. Other stuff not metal such as Fall of Troy, QOTSA, Interpol, Flaming Lips I enjoy to get a sense of what I think is decent. Most of those bands probably sound generic to you lot but i'd appriciate any recommendations you guys have as i'm a little lost with all these genres to pick from.
