That Protest the Hero shoot was what got me into his work. I actually didn't know he did the twilight photos until a couple months ago when I saw a video from the shoot. A lot of my post production is based off of his methods. He is definitely on my "to meet" list if I ever get a chance.

I did band promo shots for a friend's band ages ago and really had no idea what I was doing and wasn't at all happy with the results. I've learnt a lot about post-processing etc since then and I went back and had a look at what I'd done to see if I could improve them.    I made the rookie mistake of shooting in the middle of the day with some very harsh sun, but I really like how these look after editing.

I shot my first show the other night. Heres 3 of what I consider the best. I have a few other ones I thought were pretty good but I took them off flickr by accident and haven't bothered putting them back up. First lesson learned, bring ear plugs. Any way im not sure what post I should do on them if any at all. Id love to hear some input.

If I showed you photos from the first concerts I shot with a film SLR you'd question if I had any business owning a camera. Pretty good shots for your first gig, a few small things. The first shot has too much room at the top, would benefit from a tighter crop even if it means losing the lights. Second shot captures the action well and is pretty good compositionaly considering the monitor in your way, only problem I have with it is that it's an awkward (unflattering) expression from the subject and your highlights are blown (pretty much unavoidable with harsh red light like this). Third shot is out of focus (easy to do when shooting at f/1.8, just something you'll get better at with practice.

My buddy drummed for them for a while. And for another guy whose promos sucks way more than people will ever admit, Todd Owyoung. Seriously, if I were slayer I'd have beaten him with my metal chains if he made us look this boring.  Hey, I have 7 lights, let's use them all at full power and just surround them so there's no depth to anything and no shadows anywhere. Yeah, that'll look awesome.

Joey L usually always pulls through with an awesome shot or idea, then matches it with killer lighting. But when one of those guys gets to shoot a name as monumental as Slayer and they pull some local lovely metal band style shoot, it just makes me think that it depends more on knowing the right people.

It really does, which sucks. Right now there are only a few names I really keep an eye on in terms of band promo photos. Joey L, Adam Elmakias, and my friend Nicole Rork. If you read the accompanying article, he had about three minutes to do the shots, so you're not exactly going to be getting the most personal of shots in that time. And like I said, Slayer has a fine history of "standing there" promo shots. If I were to find fault with his promo shots, I would say that it's that he often puts subjects too far to the edge with ultra wide angle lenses and group shots so the people on the sides of the group end up being very distorted. He doesn't know how to use light evenly. All of his promos are way too bright and too wide. The subject just doesn't pop and I get bored. No emotion, no depth of field, etc. Wide angle works for landscape style promos (when the focus is more on the background than the band), but it doesn't work for portraits. PS: Todd, if you read this, I'm not trying to knock you, I just feel you have a lot of potential and just aren't using it.

I agree with them just standing there, but still, he could have done a lot more set up work beforehand to dial in his lighting. Heck, you could even do some minor work on post to darken that up and add some drama to the photo. A lot of his photos could be made so much better by simply adjusting the power on some of his lights, or using less of them. And I definitely agree with the thought of using a tighter lens and backing up. Wide angle all the time is boring and it gets distorted.

Some of my best photos were taken in under three minutes. Of course the setup and prep time took longer, but since I knew exactly what I was going for, the actually shoots were short and easy. Here's a few recent ones: Set up time: 5 minutes. Shoot time: 2 minutes  Set up time: 3 minutes. Shoot time: 4 minutes  Set up time: 2 minutes. Shoot time: > 1 minute

On the subject of Ear Plugs: I'm 23 on Saturday, I've been in bands that practiced twice a week for 2 years, played about a dozen shows, and been to several hundred others since I was 15. I used to wear ear-plugs at practice with my metal band. I've never really had trouble hearing, the only time my ears ring is at big (1,000+ people) shows. Anywhere else is really about as loud as being in a car at 3/5-3/4 volume of the radio. Granted it seems like a lot of you guys are shooting more of those big shows, I usually only go to the smallish local shows though.

You should be wearing ear plugs even if the music isn't absolutely blasting loud because once your hearing is gone, it's gone and your quality of life will suffer, especially if you end up with stuff like tinnitus. Often smaller venues are worse for hearing damage than larger ones because you will be much closer to the speakers and generally the music isn't mixed as well so it may be overly harsh and damaging. If you ever leave the venue, get in your car and find that you have to turn up the stereo from the level it was when you got out of the car in the first place, you should have worn ear plugs.

 Another shoot from over the weekend with a local band. Spent a very good amount of time in getting the color to my liking. I made an animated (and compressed to hell) gif of the original/color corrected/and edited version:  Speaking of quick setups though, this was the first of five shots I was doing before we got kicked out of that place.

Just finished scanning a batch of photos I took of a friend's band the other night, my first attempt at doing concert photography. Shot with Tmax P3200... I'm thinking it's time to hunt down a faster lens, though, my 50mm f2 was struggling in this light.

Local band Letters From Earth, at a local venue, Friday night. I love shooting at this place, it's lit nicely and you can instantly get behind and beside the stage.       Set on Flickr Shooting an all-day music festival today/tonight, it's a great weekend.

I don't have any problem with using flash myself when the lighting is really bad. I figure that if the good lord intended me to never, ever use flash, he'd never, ever give me crappy lighting.

Small, dingy, cheap club with four overhead stage lights and nothing at all coming from the front... so dark I couldn't see my metering needle. Was shooting at about 1/60 wide open.

1/60 at F2 3200 sounds like an average lovely-lit club, yeah. Gogo-gadget flash to the rescue. Some recent stuff: Frigate  Slapshot (who were 200% amazing)  It got pretty crazy 8)
