1. We always knew we wanted kids, so we started planning shortly after getting married. We'd been dating 8 years at that point, our jobs were stable, and we were a few years from being 30, so it seemed like it was time to start planning.

2. I have awesome family and awesome in-laws, so we told them. I also told some friends. I was already getting sick of the "When are you going to have some kids!" question, so we just started saying "soon" or "next year" instead of "stop asking already!"

3. Yes, that is very natural. I have siblings that are 13 years younger than me, so I have vivid memories of my parent's sleepless nights and toddler tantrums. As a result, I was very excited and at the same time very anxious.

4. We decided to start trying about one year from when we made the decision to start trying at some point in the future. It was VERY hard to wait. We decided to wait until after a BIG family trip for my parents anniversary ( no way in hell I was going to be pregnant for an all expenses paid luxury vacation in Vegas!) But even still, it was hard to wait when something in my brain was going BABY BABY BABY MUST HAVE BABY. But I'm glad we waited.

1) At what point did you decide that you definitely wanted to start trying to have a baby?
I've been ready for several years. My husband is just now a the point where he realizes that this is a sticking point with me and well why the heck not.

When you decided that you wanted to start trying (or had at least set a date for the future), who did you tell?
I'd say last month we had the TALK. Right now we are going for July of next year. I'll try to push it for sooner and he'll try to push it for later. But at least now we have a date.

4) For those of you who set a date for the future, how hard was it for you to wait?
It's killing me to wait even for part of it. Even knowing I need to get myself in a better place physically. Also for my husband to get in a better place of him not being like his father. So we'll see on that one.

Can anyone give me their knowledge or experiences about trying to get pregnant after having been on the pill/some other form of hormonal birth control for some time. I've been on the pill nonstop since 2001. My husband and I aren't likely to start trying for kids until 2012, with the hope of having an early to mid 2013 baby. Are our chances of conceiving less likely since I will have been on the pill for a total of 11 years non-stop by that point?

I was on the pill for around 20 years. Eek! It took about six months for my period to regularize after coming off (though to be fair, it may have taken that long in part due to dieting and stress at the same time, as it was heading up to my wedding). I started trying once my cycle was back to normal, because that coincided with the wedding, and was pregnant 2 and a half months later, at the age of 36. So I can certainly say that it did not prevent me from regaining my fertility, but I did allow some time before we wanted to start trying to get pregnant in order to let things come back to normal.

wife had been on the pill/patch/ring since like 14, we just got pregnant at 27 after being off for 2 or 3 months.

One of my friends was on the pill just about as long as you have been when she went off of it and got pregnant pretty quickly, and another friend (who had been on the pill on and off for about the same length of time) got pregnant the month after she stopped taking the pill. From what I've heard, being on the pill long-term shouldn't effect your fertility.

I cannot change the gender of my unborn child and shouldn't waste my time or energy pretending he won't exist

It's still early, and we haven't had an ultrasound yet, but I can't keep this inside anymore. We're pregnant! My estimation, based on me testing for LH surges and acting accordingly, is that we're about 4 weeks past fertilization, so I believe that counts as 6 weeks pregnant? No dating based on last missed period for me, as I don't have regular cycles at all, but I heard that they still add on those two weeks prior to fertilization.

We have an ultrasound scheduled for about two weeks (was supposed to have one yesterday, to estimate a due date, but some mix-up meant it wasn't actually scheduled when it was supposed to be. :argh:), at which the OB tells me we might be able to see the heartbeat!

We have told our immediate family, and our closest friends, but we're not telling work or the rest of the Internet until we're a little farther along. Not sure we'll be able to keep it under wraps all the way to the end of the first trimester, though. :3:

We're over-the-moon excited!!!

Wheee! I am so incredibly excited, and to be honest, shocked it happened so quickly. We agreed to try to have a baby, then I began testing for LH surges a couple of days later. A few days after that, I detected a surge, and here I am, pregnant. I'm feeling really blessed that it happened so quickly!

Now that I've broken down and admitted that I'm knocked up, I thought I'd share my experience with this as well. :D

I am 30, and I was on a form of birth control for 12 years. I took the pill for two years, then did Depo shots for three years, then was back on the pill for the rest of the years. For me, with extremely irregular cycles, contraceptives were a means to regulate my cycle as well as provide birth control.

I went off the pill in January of this year. We didn't even talk about getting pregnant until the middle of July, and then it happened by the end of July. However, I think we just got really, really lucky, and I ovulated right after we talked about it.

I would say that, in your situation, I'd be going off the pill when you feel confident that you're ready to have a baby, because it might happen right away, or it might happen a year later. But you should be prepared for the right away, as it has happened before.

I highly recommend reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Wechsler and beginning to practice FAM when you're ready to start trying. This way you'll begin to see the patterns in your body's ovulatory cycles and know when the best time to try is. She doesn't exactly recommend using ovulation strips, but honestly, that's what worked for me. I think using them in conjunction with FAM is a great way to have a holistic picture of your fertility.

Whew...novel...

Coming off the pill can actually be really good for your fertility. I am doing IUI with injectible fertility drugs, and sometimes it takes a few cycles to get pregnant. It's better not to do them back to back, and my fertility specialist actually puts his patients on the pill between IUI cycles because it apparently makes you pretty fertile your first cycle off of it. I'm not really sure why it works this way, but it is a fairly common practice in infertility treatment.

I know that many of the ladies in this thread are having a much worse time that I am, and I want to vent here, but first a caveat; I know that I am relatively fortunate, and know that my troubles don't compare, really.

So I've been having kind of a weird summer. My husband and I aren't really trying for a kid yet--next September is our official start time--because he wants to save up some money first. That said, we'd both be delighted by an accident. In my previous pregnancy, I tested negative until six weeks in, FWIW. So in June we moved, and my period was over a week late--I never tested pregnant, but then the eventual period was super heavy and painful, and I didn't know wtf. July, I miscounted and thought my period was due a day earlier than it actually was, tested the day before it was due, got a faint positive--and then got my period the next day. Somewhat depressed. So now it is August, my period is a day late, I test negative. I know that I'm not pregnant, but I still kind of want to hope that I am, but I'm not, but I know that I'll be disappointed when I do get my period again. [/selfpity]

Can anyone tell me about infertility drugs and breastfeeding? I'm reading don't do it, but I think this is based more on you having a slightly higher chance of not getting pregnant while breastfeeding due to the increased prolactin. I really can't understand why I wouldn't be able to breastfeed when the medications I'd be taking would just be synthetic versions of the hormones my body would be producing anyway. I'm waiting until Lucy is over 1 year old before we start trying for another anyway because breastfeeding for at least a year is mandatory for me, but I'd like to breastfeed for longer than this if possible because Lucy is very needy and I have a feeling she'll want to do it for a longer period of time than most kids would. Note that I haven't spoken to a fertility endocrinologist yet, this is just based on what I've read around the internet.

So I asked my fertility doc about infertility meds and breastfeeding. He's never been asked that before, because his patients have so far all weaned their first before trying for a second. He said he'd do some research before officially signing off on it, but he didn't think it would be a problem, at least not the injectible meds he uses most frequently.

Arrgh. I still have a couple days till I should get my period but I took a pregnancy test and it came back negative. I guess there's still a chance. I really thought I got pregnant this month. I'm having a lot of early symptoms like mild constant nausea, headaches, tired, peeing more, and my lower back hurts for no drat reason. I even had an implantation dip in my temp chart this month. Oh well. :sigh:

Not trying to give you any false hope, but don't get completely sad/giving up until your period actually comes or you actually miss it. You might have just been that 30% or whatever it is that doesn't actually show a positive til the day of your missed period. Good luck, and I'm sorry if it didn't work out this time.

When my wife and I were trying to get pregnant, she would almost ALWAYS take a early detection pregnancy test as soon as she could, and sometimes possibly a day or two too early. I eventually talked her into waiting because it would suck, she would get a negative, then we'd be like "oh well you took it pretty early so you might still have a chance!" and then she'd take one later and it also would be negative.

Anyway, my advice is to just wait until you are sure it is late enough to take the test.

My best friend just found out that she's pregnant. She was having weirdness with her period for 2 months before it finally showed a positive. She had tested at least 10 times in those 2 months. She was just over 8 weeks pregnant at that point. Some people's HCG levels are just weird like that.

Next time we're looking to get pregnant, I've got to promise myself to not test until a missed period. It's such a rollercoaster ride seeing negatives.

So we're technically on a break for trying to get pregnant, but I'm pretty flabbergasted right now. I started having twinges in my side this morning, so I took an OPK -- glaringly positive. This is amazing to me, since I only ever ovulated on my own ONCE.

I can think of a couple of women on the normal BC Pill that still breastfeeds (why they do that, I do not know). So, on the back of that, I don't see why you CAN'T try infertility drugs. On the other hand, I don't know what *possible* side effects there are between REAL oestrogens and synthetic ones, and I don't want you litigious-happy yanks to come after me with a blockade of lawyers ;).
