Something tells me there might be a reason you call people at colleges and universities "starving students" The original point wasn't necessarily that people were being cheap but that the quality was so atrocious on the shirt; the Germany emblem was warped and the lines were crooked. If they were a big enough fan that they wanted a shirt even if it was a bootleg, they probably would have known that it looked like poo poo, if they were just clueless, they probably would have known that it looked like poo poo.

In the end private school vs. community or state is really just a privilege in my eyes. I have no doubt in my mind that 90% of the kids on this campus aren't responsible for a dime of their college experiences. Ah, it's a private institution? Makes a little more sense. A store in the mall in my hometown had those sort of fakeo kits. I think that the clueless don't know enough about football to know that, for example, the sponsor logo on an Inter kit isn't made out of hard plastic, etc. I think they just look terrible to dudes and ladies like us that know good jerseys. Other possibilities are that they are given as gifts; I have an Atlas and an Olympiakos kit where the numbers and all the badges are screen printed on, and I also have a Greek kit where although the badges are embroidered, it's a two-stripe. All three were given to me (although I rarely wear them) In any case, I think it's crazier to see similar bootlegs on eBay.

bootlegs have made eBay practically useless for buying kits, lots of the time you don't even get the item pictured in the auction anyway.

I think a lot of those are from people who've gone on exchange (or have friends who do) and they're just as much souvenirs as they are shows of fandom and support. Somebody who's diehard enough to go to a stadium will probably buy the real thing, but Random College Student Studying Abroad is just going to think "oh hey I'm going to pick up a soccer jersey from *European/South American country*" and it's another reminder of their trip. I went to a big state school and saw a bunch of those too, but also a lot of real ones. I think the fans get the real ones and the fakes are as described above, really.

Yeah this is probably right. I spent a year in Spain and almost every person in my program bought a shirt. Most of them got fake ones and almost none of them followed soccer. I'd say 75% bought bootleg Ronaldinho shirts thinking he was still on the team (this was last season) 90% of the shirts I see on campus (upstate NY)are United, Chelsea or Italy (ughhhhhhh) don't think I've ever seen an Arsenal or Liverpool kit which is kind of surprising.

A friend of friend of mine told me he planned to buy a Torres Liverpool jersey when he goes to Spain later this week. I asked him why he didn't want to get a Torres Spain kit instead since that seems like a more logical souvenir. He didn't have an answer for that.

Seriously, just drop them and then stick them there when you win a few Champions League titles, they're probably all going to come in the next decade anyway. Possibly. We don't like it either, and most fans favour a return to the old badge although we have been promised that we will get the Manchester coat of arms on our kit when we get to a final, as is our tradition. (I'm sure someone will again make a snide comment about how long that will be).

Stars above a crest should only represent trophies won

I buy fake kits whenever I got on vacation to a third world country. I got a few in Quito, a couple in Buenos Aires and a bunch in Guatemala. They make great souvenirs. I am not gonna drop $50 on a kit for a club I don't really care about. I spent less than $10 per shirt, and now I have a Veron Estudiantes shirt, a Guatemala national team kit, a Boca shirt, etc.

The second kit is identical to the 1st kit of an argentinian team, Chacarita Juniors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chacarita_Juniors Red is for socialism, white for purity and black for death

I was wondering why Vitesse Arnhem had such unusual colours for their away kit this year. Turns out it's a nod to the city's history. The grey stands for the John Frost bridge and the maroon stand for the British Airborne Division.
