Hooplah posted:You should try Edison Glass. They're kinda like a combination of Circa Survive and As Tall As Lions. Also, I know they don't really sound alike but it seems most people who like Circa Survive also like Thrice. I'd recommend their latest couple releases to start. Portugal. The Man was a great recommendation. Been eating away at their tracks on Amazon and I'm in love with almost every track I've downloaded.

Maybe Suicide. Definitely Joy Division, and this is the first and last time I will recommend Joy Division seriously.

I've been listening to a lot of noise and drone recently and my favorite track far and away has been Birchville Cat Motel's Beautiful Speck Triumph (shifts into high gear at around the 13-minute mark). I've been trying to find something in noise and/or drone that comes close to achieving that same kind of gorgeous sound, something that I can really only describe as "epic" and "beautiful". The closest I've come to it is Small Christian Victories by the same artist (no link, unfortunately). Any suggestions?

Please recommend me some songs to put on a mix cd entitled "how to deal." The rules are the songs must be 90s style gangster rap about selling, making, or transporting drugs. Songs that are actually instructions such as Notorious B.I.G. "10 Crack commandments" or Master P "Ghetto D" are preferred, but songs that are questionably related and still amusing such as Cypress Hill "Tequila Sunrise" or "Dr. Greenthumb" might be used as filler if I can't find enough.

The closest contempory band I can think of that fits your description would be The Editors, who have a mix of post-punk and math-rock thats pretty similar sounding to Interpol. Really though you aught to be looking at the 80's Goth bands for that kind of sound as thats who most of these bands are cribbing from. Joy Division, The Cure, Siousxie and the Banshees and Echo & The Bunnymen would be the main offenders. Also, obligatory youtube for the editors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xRVm-JX5Rk

Hey everyone, I'm looking to expand my library a bit. I'm a big fan of the 80s thrash metal movement, with bands everyone knows like Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer.. Is there anything else left? I listen to some of the lesser known ones too, but finding more of them on my own is proving to be a challenge.

I've always been a fan of Trance but I'm really more a fan of the slower more melodic trance, like: Stoneface and Terminal - Stardust and ATB - Ecstasy. Sadly I haven't been able to find a whole lot of artists that make trance like this, just the stray obscure artists like Stoneface and Terminal who don't have much of a library, or at least a readily available one. Tiesto has a lot of songs that fit into this "category", but he's one of few (that I've been able to find). Sites like Last.fm and the such always lead me to the same few artists: Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, ATB, and that's about it. I love all 3 of them, but it's certainly not the wide range of choices I'd like! Any ideas? Oops fucked around with this message at 20:35 on Sep 5, 2009 |

I used to spin this stuff half a decade ago. You'll want early trance, stuff from like 2000-2004. Also, this channel will often play stuff that you like. Just listen to it for awhile. You can also send me an IM for other sites. EDIT: Mr Sam feat. Rani- "Surrender", one of the songs I had in heavy rotation Check out stuff by Alibi, Chicane, any of the artists that are on the albums by Tiesto, Corsten, Van Buuren, etc. the fucked around with this message at 22:25 on Sep 5, 2009 |

There is a band from France called "Hold Your Horses" that i've fallen in love with but I can't seem to get the album for purchase anywhere... It's only available from what i can see to the UK and France. http://www.myspace.com/holdyourhorsesparis

^^Interesting This question is a bit restrictive, so I'll really appreciate any input I receive! I am currently "studying" French (i.e. doing Rosetta Stone) and am hoping to get a hold of some French music to listen to to help me learn proper accent, pronunciation, etc. so that I can study even when I'm not really studying. That being said, lately I've been listening mostly to Mat Kearney, Matt Nathanson, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, The Fray, Keane, Sia and the like on one hand, and Audioslave, Flobots, Kings of Leon, Rise Against, and Sparta on the other. Can anyone make a recommendation based off that? And heck, if you want to recommend some English-speaking bands because you think I'd like 'em, I won't say no! There isn't much else that sounds like Boards of Canada, but you might have luck with artists such as Tycho, Bibio, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Aphex Twin, Plaid, Four Tet, Telefon Tel Aviv, Clark, Amon Tobin, Helios, and more. You can also look for artists that fall under the "IDM" genre. insomne fucked around with this message at 06:26 on Sep 8, 2009 |

If that's the case, then I'd recommend Nuclear Assault (Game Over/The Plague), Exodus (Bonded by Blood and Fabulous Disaster) and Testament (The Legacy and The New Order). But perhaps you've already heard all these? Two lesser known but equally great thrash-bands would be Cryptic Slaughter (get Convicted and Money Talks, both re-released on Relapse) and Exhorder (try to find the Roadrunner re-relase with both of their albums).

The track you linked is neither trance nor drum n bass. I don't have a list of producers for you, but "hardstyle" is the current terminology for stuff in the style of your linked track, search that and you'll find plenty. Used to be called "uk hard house" back in the first part of this decade, and it's basically the modern version of mid-90s happy hardcore, so you might like that stuff too I guess.
