Wow, that's actually... fairly impressive. The effectiveness is obviously diminished by not having seatbelts to constrain the range of motion, but it looked like it did a fair job in decreasing the blow to the head from colliding with that driver-side window.

Not just the head, the neck especially got saved with the airbag instead of simply folding in half backwards like it did without the bag.

You can already buy suits with airbags in that are going to be a lot more effective than any airbag system fitted to a bike. Lorenzo crashed with a prototype a while back, which showed how effective they could potentially be at stabilising your neck.

People won't even wear helmets, what makes you think they're going to wear airbag suits?

Airbag jacket+airbag bike=ultimate protection? Invincible airborne Michelin Man bouncing down the road.
In any case, it's nice that the option exists.

Most states do have helmet laws, and they've been developing the airbag systems that seamlessly integrate with jackets & leather suits. RS-Taichi actually has one that snaps essentially onto the collar of your jacket/suit and really prevents damage to your neck and collar bones.

Don't be scared, homie!
I just came home from Italy and like 20% of riders were wearing jackets, I saw no-one with riding pants on. 60% of the big bikes were Ducs, much more Triumphs that here in Germany though. Oh and I saw a badass Priest with his black gown, a black helmet, riding a black enduro. It was sick as hell, but I forgot to take a picture.

ok this video makes me laugh out loud every time I see it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hIvj84faQM

lots of youtube clips have funny and crash in the title but this is the only one that I think truly fits the bill.

basically it is the least dignified supermotard wipeout I have ever seen. Maybe someone else can shed some light on the physics that brought this poor bastard to a soft, humiliating halt

I'm pretty sure those are really lightweight bikes, and he essentially lowsided but kept the bike up on his knee. I know racers (like Colin Edwards last year in qualifying) have been able to save lowsides by digging their knee into the ground and pushing the bike back up.

Slim Pickens

I think it might of been part keeping the bike up with his knee and too slow corner exit. The tire was angled in pretty hard but it just tracked him into the shoulder.

Well gently caress, I just got thrown off my bike because of a loving deer, and I would have rather hit the airbag and been knocked back off the bike a few yards instead of literally bouncing down the road at 60 miles an hour. But then again, they'd have to implement an airbag on an EX250. Bah. I think the biggest advantage is absorbing the initial forward momentum of the crash.
