From what I understood his idea is basically :

Grip = Weight on the tires, you can apply weight on the tires using aerodynamic downforce but it will be a variable force. By minimizing the effect of downforce on the car you get a car that is more predictable because most of the force applied to the car comes from the car mass itself which isn't variable.

He insisted on the F1 cars with these figure : Car = 600Kg + Downforce = 1000Kg to illustrate the fact that the car will have a different behavior and grip depending on it's speed (more speed = more downforce)

I haven't watched the video but I don't see how that makes sense. More weight does mean more friction on the contact patches, but it also means more weight to control with that grip (either when accelerating or centrifugal forces when cornering), so I think it kind of evens out.

If you consider a plot where x = contact patch, y = weight, and z is the achieved grip, it's possible that there is a ridge maxima, that connects solutions like Lotuses along through to the GTR, which is heavy but has huge tires. Maybe other supercars have been ignoring the possibility that there can be a 3800lb package that can still grip very well. Obviously the weight is a detriment to straight line acceleration, but apparently that is well compensated by the motor.

Theres a differnece in the abolute terms vs. relative. If you have 2 cars on tires with a coefficient of fricton of 1, a 10kg car will have 98nM of force while a 15kg will have 150nM. A small bump will cause the same absolute loss in grip for both, but the change will be much more drastic for the lighter vehicle. If you want a car that can be quickly driven everyday and by 90% of people, heavier is better to a point.

yes, a specific tire works best at a specific load, temperature, and pressure, so you can achieve the same level of outright mechanical grip on a heavier car.

But that's all just a big load of bullshit. A lighter car has less inertia, and more importantly a lower polar moment of inertia. So it changes direction more easily and quickly.

If it works so well for the GTR why don't the same laws apply to the Veyron? Then again though, the Veyron really is a hambeast.

That's just the way he rolls.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. The laptimes the GTR is getting is just not possible with it's (relativity) small horsepower and huge weight. I maintain that it's powered by magic and he just doesn't want to admit it.

Also is he the guy who told Forza's Turn 10 if they wanted the car, it can't be damaged, roll over, be painted, or have after market mods?

[edit] The only thing I can think of that backs up his claim that weight = good, is Top Gears T1 Caparo review.

Oh. And if weight = good, why doesn't everyone race SUV's. :smug:

The GTR was built using the laws of animes. That was the real research breakthrough.

I watched that last night and thought about posting it. They got 11% better MPG, I was just as surprised as they were. They showed that dimpled golf balls go about twice as far as non-dimpled ones, so If they could just get the dimpled exterior of the car to spin like a golf ball, I bet they could get even better mileage.
