dphrag posted:edit2: this guy is classy, calling for the permanent quarantining of HIV positive people, I got in to this argument with my sister the other week. I was trying to explain the ban on people with AIDS visiting America, and she (22 years old) said she agreed with it. Her boyfriend and I tried very hard to explain to her that it maybe made sense in the early '80's when we didn't know how it was caused, but now it amounted to a defacto ban on gay people, even people seeking medical treatment, even women raped in Africa under the mistaken belief that loving a virgin would cure you of AIDS, even though we let people with far more communicable diseases in. It boiled down to: My sister is an idiot. It disturbs me, because my Republican father agrees with me on this, but my sister, who generally is liberal (go me and my brainwashing) disagrees, because she's never thought about it. Her opinion is a knee jerk "I don't want AIDS!!!!" position. She's never been to a gyno exam and refuses to use condoms with her boyfriend and generally has a very hosed up stance about sex, so I shouldn't be surprised, I guess, but every time a discussion of a penis comes up I want to beat her dumb rear end senseless.

Interestingly, it may have been the very media that threw up a storm about it that created the folk belief, not the other way around. Subject: FW: THE PENCILS AND THE PROLETARIAT THE PENCILS AND THE PROLETARIAT ONE OF THE BEST EXPLANATIONS OF WHY OBAMA WON THE ELECTION --From a teacher in the Chicago area "We are worried about 'the pencils' when it is all about the 'Proletariat.' The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year... The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote. To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot. The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. The most pressing issue in the classroom was that almost half of the children were failing and many were teetering on the edge. Many of the children were too poor to afford pencils and when it was time to take tests they could only stare at the questions. A few students had made deals with the wealthy students and received pencil scraps in exchange for doing their homework hand helping them cheat on tests. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches. Jamie went first. Jamie proposed that the money the class received for parties be distributed as cash to the students with the highest grades. He argued that it wasn't fair to have a party that everyone could enjoy when only a few kids were doing well. He concluded, everyone in the class was given a free pencil at the beginning of the year and the kids that are blaming the lack of pencils for their poor grades shouldn't have wasted them taking notes or drawing pictures. The three kids with the highest grades applauded, as did a few kids who figured that if the kids with high grades got extra money, they'd get pencil scraps at some point down the line. Now is was Olivia's turn to speak. Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will set aside a supply of pencils that will be handed out on test days and returned at the end of the test." She sat down. The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want pencils." She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the pencils? She wasn't sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it. She didn't know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was pencils. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide. Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered pencils and 52 percent of the people reacted like nine year olds. They want pencils. 3 percent know that they're going to be the ones paying for pencils The other 45 percent know that if everyone gets pencils for tests they won't enjoy their pencil scraps anymore." These are the pencils Obama promised us!

He includes an odd statement about Mao Tse Tung, which I admit seems odd, but I don't even know the full story and imagine it is taken out of context. And wonders why she doesn't turn to Lincoln who, using the same criteria as he did for Mao, was responsible for more American deaths than any single man in history.
