Though Appleseed has some real gems if you can find it. Personally I'm looking for hip-hop tracks with multiple vocals going at the same time, though not necessarily related to one another. I've heard a lot of Dose-One tracks doing this, but I was listening to the Latyrx song "Latyrx" off of "The Album" and I'm really digging the way DJ Shadow interlaced Lateef's flows with those of Lyrics Born. Pandora is failing me. What do you think?

Currently my top ten most listened to bands are 1. Bob Dylan 2. Tom Waits 3. Beck 4. Townes Van Zandt 5. Warren Zevon 6. Johnny Cash 7. The Band 8. Monsters of Folk 9. The Rolling Stones 10. Jerry Jeff Walker However I recently started listening to newer roots rock/folk bands, like Blitzen Trapper, M. Ward, the Moondoggies, Duchess and the Duke, Uncle Tupelo, and a couple Brian Jonestown Massacre albums from the 90s. While my top ten is mostly from 60s/70s, I'm looking for some more contemporary roots rock/folk bands.

I'm in a bind. I'm a fan of latin rock, psychedelic jams, etc. Rhythm is a big deal, but I'm not opposed to pop melody and harmony, etc. Favorites would be: Xiu Xiu Gypsy Kings Rodrigo Y Gabriela Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Yann Tiersen Battles Lately I've been riding off of polyrhythms, but once you've figured out a beat by Meshuggah it gets old fast. I've tried Animal Collective, Jaga Jazzist, Aphex Twin, Dirty Projectors, Fleet Foxes, The Books...there are good tracks, but it's just not clicking most of the time. I need more energy (inorganic beats make my rear end tired, I know that complicates things). As far as lyricism I prefer that it plays off of the music, maybe some surrealism and tasteful melodrama. Songwriters are fine, Beck and Wainright and Sufjan Stevens, but it hardly gets you up in the morning. Meshuggah is NOT a good example for lyrics, Battles is. I'm not sure what to do, I feel like I'm waiting on a blast from the past. I'm thinking maybe some good bebop? If you like stuff that has rapping, try Nas, Q-Tip and Mobb Deep. I wouldn't mind looking into Monk, but his career is diverse and I'm not sure what material I'd be looking for. this post is almost completely incomprehensible but from what i can gather (and its not much) you're looking for something with very complex rhythms and given the fact that you brought up an interest in jazz in the last part of that rambling abortion, maybe some pharoah sanders would suit you well? his albums "karma", "thembi" and "black unity" all have extremely cool polyrhythms and feature some strange vox that might fit the bill of "people doing weird or unusual stuff with their voices" like battles do even if they aren't 100% similar. again though i'm going out on a limb here though because frankly i don't really have anything but the vaguest idea of what the gently caress you're looking for. Hi, now I know I'm going to sound like a music listening novice when I post this... but I would love to hear some more music in the vein of Nirvana. Understand I am not asking for more grunge nor groups that resemble Nirvana musically. Rather I am looking for groups with an expansive knowledge and recognition of their influences that are not afraid to expand upon and subvert those influences. I kind of think of Kurt Cobain as the Quentin Tarintino of alternative music. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the music that influenced him, referenced it constantly yet made it his own. Can anyone recommend me bands knowledgable of rock music's past who are also knowledgably unique?

I doubt Cobain knew much more about rock history than your average rock musician, he just made it more obvious with cover songs and such, and because of his fame his music and personality have gone through much more scrutiny than your average rock guitarist's. Like, I'm sure Thurston Moore with his record collection the size of a small town library is a much more interesting case but because you've never seen his diaries at a Border's you wouldn't think that way.

Well, most of Zappa is great, but naming my favorite pieces would lean toward things like "King Kong" and "Pound for a Brown" (numerous live versions), the "non-doo-wop" tracks on Burnt Weenie Sandwich and things of that nature. Throw in The Grand Wazoo or Hot Rats to shake things up a bit. Having said that, I think that if you like the other albums I mentioned earlier, One Size Fits All should find a comfortable place in your collection. Overall, it has much the same kind of "Zappa does his version of rock'n'roll" feel that the others have. Very underrated album. Check it out.

If you like Del's style you can check out his albums I Wish My Brother George Was Here and Both Sides of the Brain -- they're generally regarded as his best albums and I agree. They're going to sound different because you can't hear Dan the Automator's genius (or Kid Koala for that matter) coming though, but Del used to be a brilliant lyricist; if you like Aesop Rock, you'll probably love early Del. Binary Star, likewise, only has one album out (Masters of the Universe) and it's a must own. I've probably listened to that album 100 times and it will never get old. Atmosphere has a ton of poo poo out. The best advice I can give you is to listen to it all because he's really changed gears as of late (playing with a backing band, etc.). Most of my friends and I agree that his best album is The Lucy Ford EPs, but I really enjoy Sad Clown Bad Dub II and godlovesugly. Really, you can't go wrong with any of the Sad Clown series of albums (the newer seasonal EPs are excellent). The rest of the recommendations are from the same 'clique'. Celph Titled is in AotP, featured on tons of JMT records and is a part of Demigodz (with Apathy, who is also in AotP). Do yourself a favor and start with Jedi Mind Trick's Violent by Design. You can branch out from there and check out AotP's first album (which is much better than their second) and anything else that interests you by that clique (Outerspace, etc.). ---------- I'm looking for good bands with female vocalists -- that's really the only stipulation. You've gotten a ridiculous response already, but I'm also drawn to female vocalists. Some not mentioned yet that I like include Howling Bells, Johnny Foreigner (male/female alternating), The Grates, The Joy Formidible, and Giant Drag, though I don't listen to an awful lot of music. Of course, all of these are more straight-ish pop and rock then most of the stuff recommended in the last two posts, but that might be what you're looking for. I also wouldn't mind a recommendation myself. I don't listen to a lot of music, so I often just stay transfixed on a band or two for months at a time with no attempt to seek out new music. Some of the bands mentioned are often associated with shoegaze, alt-pop and indie rock - I was wondering if you guys had some good recommendations on any nice shoegaze stuff, in particular.

I'm looking for three particular styles of music which I know absolutely nothing about - The first one I would describe as stripped down, dark Spanish guitar with vocals. I was waiting for a train and there was an older man playing guitar and singing, and it was awesome. I recorded a clip on my phone (which I can post here but the quality is terrible) and asked a friend of mine if she knew the song. She thought it was Leonardo Favio, but when I looked him up I found that his stuff was orchestrated with strings and drums and multiple vocalists, and so even though the song might be the same it just didn't have the same mood. The second is Iranian/Persian music, but I'm not really looking for the traditional stuff or the dance/Bollywood style stuff. I overheard some bits and pieces of the Rumi Symphony Project at work last night and I really liked, but there's not too much information on the internet. That site has a few songs but I don't know where they're from because there doesn't seem to be an album of this stuff anywhere. Also those songs aren't quite the same as the ones I heard last night. The music is described as "a blend of Middle Eastern musical structures and the sounds and textures of Western orchestration" which is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Basically traditional Iranian instruments (especially the awesome percussion stuff) in a modern western setting. The third style might be linked to the Iranian stuff, but I'm looking for some music that you generally hear in movies when someone is lost and dying the the desert. It's very simple music consisting of an endless drone and a single female vocalist singing in a very sorrowful manner. She will hold out long notes - no words, I don't think) punctuated by little flips and modulations. I know that's a terrible description but I'm not really sure how to describe it any better. I wish I had an example of this. Anyway, any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
