It never felt tense at all (though I could see how they were trying to *make* it feel tense), and the ending was, for lack of a better word, laughable... though, I've heard that this is a common opinion held by idiots. Perhaps I'm just a moron. On the other hand, I'm enjoying the hell out of Stray Dog... clearly I just need to stick to Akira Kurosawa and noir.

I absolutely adore Kaurismaki! If there was some director that made movies that were exactly how I want movies to be... that director exists and his name is Aki Kaurismaki.

Brazil ($60, 3 disc) came out to just over $20 before tax with the 50% off Criterion + 10% member discount + 25% off coupon Anything that is normally $40 or lower, you're better off using the $5 off coupon rather than the 25% off coupon.

NYC goons, I went to the Union Square B&N. The sets I looked for but didn't see were Berlin Alexanderplatz, Late Ozu and Dusan Makavejev. They do have a pretty good collection though, with multiple copies of a lot. If you're looking for any Eclipse sets, better get there soon, as it looks like they had only single copies of the sets they did have: the Mizoguchi one, Travels with Shimizu, Saura's Flamenco, Early Bergman, Silent Ozu, Kaurismaki, Malle Documentaries.

The Lincoln Center B&N in NYC has the best assortment and quantity of Criterion discs on the whole, but I haven't been there this week to see how hard they've been hit; Union Square is running fairly low on Blu-ray titles, but they're pretty good about restocking, otherwise.

I'm not really sure why I printed out all those 25% and $5 off coupons. I'm not really sure why I decided to pop into B&N today and what I was looking for. All know is I ended up with Yujimbo (what number Kurosawa is this?) and The Human Condition (blind buy, but since I like WW2 stuff and loved Letters from Iwo Jima... plus it came out to something stupid like $25). What's scary? I still have plenty of money.

Berlin Alexanderplatz is as awesome as everyone says it is, right? I just went to B&N again and it's one of the dvds I bought. I have seen maybe like an hour of it? I am not one for buying dvds of movies I haven't seen, but at that price I figured I'd go ahead and get it, so I won't have to rent it one disc at a time. Plus, I love Fassbinder. Anyone here seen it?

I was thinking along the lines of main character drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army and the various ways that affects life. I am in no way expecting the battle royale that occurs in that film of course. I'm talking about things like fighting for your country when you can't reconcile what your country wants to do with your own personal feelings. Seperation from loved ones. I imagine The Human Condition is a lot more more complex than I'm making it out to be.

I'm in China, and there's this great place that sells DVDs called Band of Brothers (like their DVDs, even their name is pirated.) The DVDs are all great quality, despite being copied, but what's really unique about the store is their selection, which ranges from the extremely obscure to the mainstream to the pornographic. Anyway, they have the DVDs arranged by director, star, etc. and they have a section for the Criterion Collection, which I've been buying up at 10 RMB a piece (less than $2.) I just got the Criterion Downhill Racer, due to be released Stateside on Tuesday. It's a good one, pick it up. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Whoever was wondering about the Lincoln Center B&N, I was there last night. Place got wrongeddddddd. There's a ton of poo poo there, but it's mobbed and some big ones are sold out. I went in wanted to get House, Days of Heaven, and that Japanese noir boxset but all three were out of stock.

B&N shipped Ran, but is still showing Nights of Cabiria as Nov. 30 shipdate. It won't let me cancel, so I'm guessing they're just waiting for a copy to get to them from another location? By the way, they "sort of" seem to be throwing out hints on Facebook to The Killing, Belle de Jour, and Johnny Guitar (or other Nicholas Ray), but I take anything other than a newsletter animal with a grain of salt. They're also pointing to more Shakespeare in the near future, so have fun with that one. Egbert Souse fucked around with this message at 01:57 on Nov 17, 2009 |

Maybe another Eclipse Kaurismaki set with Hamlet Goes Business in it. Oh man, I'd love a set with: Calamari Union Hamlet Goes Business I Hired a Contract Killer Drifting Clouds La Vie de Boheme I was going to add Leningrad Cowboys Go America, but that one really deserves the full-blown Criterion treatment.

The only "obvious" ones would be the trio and a half of Welles, remasters on the Olivers and Kurosawas. Although, MGM has Branagh's Henry V and McKellan's Richard III.

Most of the dvds for Polanski's Macbeth have been poo poo, given they already have a few of his films out it might be a possibility. And who actually owns that movie, is it still a Playboy property of is it owned by Paramount?

Just watched Pickpocket for the first time, and it blew me away. Easily one of the best films I've ever seen. I've added all of Bresson's other films to my Netflix queue that were available, and I'd really appreciate any recommendations of films similar to this one in vibe/minimalism. I've already seen a lot of recent minimalist stuff (like Kim Ki-Duk or Jarmusch films) so I more interested in ones around Pickpocket's time period. Forbidden Games is one that fits the vibe and time period that I also fell madly in love with.

This is kind of an odd question, but I wanted to pick up a few Criterions just to broaden my horizons cinematically. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for things they've put out that are horror or thriller/suspense in nature. I picked up Repulsion because bizarrely my local Hastings had it for sale. I'm thinking Vampyre, but I was wondering if there was anything else you guys might recommend.

I'm thinking Vampyre, but I was wondering if there was anything else you guys might recommend. The Wages of Fear is one of the most intense and suspenseful films I've ever seen (I wrote a brief summary for it on this week's Awful Week at the Movies). I'd also strongly recommend Man Bites Dog and Videodrome (the packaging for Videodrome is one of the best Criterion has ever released in my opinion). As for East Asian style horror there's Jigoku and Kwidan. Though not technically a horror movie, Haxan is pretty fun to watch and, if you don't mind a little camp, there's Equinox which is a nice little special effects film. There's also the British thriller Peeping Tom and the classic American monster movie The Blob. There's also a Monsters and Madmen boxed set out there, but I haven't seen any of the films on it yet. And yes, Vampyre is an excellent choice too. EDIT: There's also Salo, the 120 Days of Sodom if that's your kind of bag, but I wouldn't think it would be. It's the scariest thing I've ever seen, and a great, great movie. But... I think the horror/thriller genre is pretty well-represented in the collection, I can't think of anything that's really bad or that you should avoid watching. Except for maybe Haxan, which I find pretty boring.
