rivals posted:Was the test that you got able to recognize pit? We thought about doing it for our pit mix pup but none of the tests we found recognized pits so we figured all of the results would be jumbled/inaccurate. I was going to try to find the test so I could tell you exactly what was on it, but it's put away where I can't get to it right now. Basically, it first divided his genetic heritage between several "types" of dogs. The main types he fell into were hunting (73%), mastiff (13%) and herding (9%). I guess he could have been any combination of breeds within those type. Then they compared his exact DNA to all of the different types of DNA they had in their database and showed us the closest matches that they had in their database. They had no close matches at all, and the closest were random mixes of different breeds that didn't seem plausibly to be anything like our dog and only had a very tiny percentage matching anyway. I think the test did have American Staffordshire on it, which is what the rescuer's best guess as to what he was had been so that was what I was looking for. It turns out he's even more of a mutt than we probably first thought, though. Unfortunately, the company that I got the test from was bought out by a pharmaceutical company and ceased operations, so the test I did is no longer available and the database no longer accesible. It's kind of disappointing because part of the appeal was the ability to keep looking up in the database to see if they had found closer matches (as unlikely as that probably is). I also have no idea how accurate these tests are. It seems to me most of them just match up the dog with the examples of purebred DNA and I'm guessing the greater the mix the harder it is to really identify. I've read some funny reviews of people with giant dogs getting back results of "toy poodle" and I'm guessing that's a lack of complete breed info so that the test just picks up some trace of something in there because it has no match to the more dominant breeds.

This is my sister's dog, Jola, found under a bush as a tiny puppy. Any guesses? When people ask what kind of dog she is now we mostly just say 'the brown kind'. She is the one in front, the other dog is a black-mouthed cur friend, Mr. Darcy. Of course she could be a North American Beedog. And here is my mutt, Sierra, probably a black lab/border collie mix. Squirrel terror threat level: orange

Hey guys. Never really posted in PI before, but I suspect you guys are a lot better at guessing dog breeds than my local humane society. I went there looking for my first solo dog (aka first dog belonging to just me and not my family-at-large). I found this cute as gently caress little dude and I'm insanely interested in adopting him. My only concern was how big he might get, so I went to inquire on its breed. All they could tell me was that he was a terrier mix. I guess that's sort of good, but something me in me just won't accept it. He was in a playpen sitting right next to some older pups (about four months or so), and they looked very similar to one another. That pen was nothing but boxers. So could he be a terrier-boxer mix? Idk. Any help you guys could offer would be great. If nobody can even hazard a guess, since this dude is only about eight weeks and I know it's kind of difficult, this post will at least serve as puppy porn. (sorry the first one is so huge; my friend's phone's camera is apparently much better than mine, which took the second two) Brokyn fucked around with this message at 04:09 on Nov 17, 2009 |

Looks like terrier/beagle to me, or maybe even purebred hound of some kind. His adult size and dimensions will make it more apparent. If he ends up quite small, he could be JRT/beagle.

His paws look pretty small, so my guess is that he'll probably be a smallish-to-medium dog when grown - maybe 20lbs, 30 tops? Looks like a miscellaneous terrier mix to me!

We just adopted a mutt! Her name is Gia and she's half heeler and half husky. I suspect blue heeler / alaskan husky, but she could be red / syberian (or malamute). In any case she is all hilarious, very quiet unless someone knocks on the door which warrants a quick "woof" and a growl, snuggly, hyperactive, wicked smart, fantastic with strangers... And a complete and utter ham for pictures. This is the picture her previous owner sent us, taken this summer when she was still fairly small. She's about 9 months old now we think and will hold a pose until the camera flash goes off if she sees me pointing the camera at her. These were taken over about one minute. She would pose, wait for the flash, pose again, etc. Just look at those husky feet. This is the only decent full body shot of her I have so far. We're so busy working on recall training in the yard with her when we go out right now so I don't have a good shot of her tail. It's just as fluffy as her butt and she'll perk it up and let it flop onto her back. She also adores sitting in my boyfriend's lap with her tongue hanging out but won't let me get a picture of it hanging out the side of her mouth. I've come to believe that mixing two intelligent breeds makes for a mutt who's too smart for her own good. Such is the case with Gia. She enjoys pretending she's deaf or doesn't understand us (she'll tilt her ears instead of her entire head when she's actually confused, just stares when she's faking). As to her intelligence coupled with being a stubborn teenager... I managed to spill something on the kitchen floor (hadn't noticed it yet) not too long before feeding time. So while I was getting her food and whatnot she took to licking the spot on the floor. I told her no and tried to distract her with a bit of kibble so she flopped down on her side and curled up to pretend to lick her belly. Had I just glanced at her I honestly would have thought she had a belly itch she was working on with her teeth. The sound of tongue on linoleum gave her away. Sneaky sneaky thing. Edit: I should note that I'm too lazy to fix the time/date stamp on my POS camera. Sapid fucked around with this message at 14:46 on Dec 15, 2009 |

(click for giant) This is Tola, a sheltermutt we've had for about a month now. They had her listed as a generic terrier mix, and she's about 35lbs. She developed kennel cough within the first few days we had her, but is nice and healthy now. A really really ridiculously bad picture from the day we got her. I have no idea why she was making that goofy face. She's a pretty happy go lucky little lady, but she's very sensitive to any correction-- which makes it a bit difficult when she really likes to slip out of gates and take off across the desert (She covered about a mile across a major road in under 10 minutes, but we got her back unscathed). So we're working on recall in fenced spaces, but it just doesn't seem to translate to open areas for her. The cats pretty much adore her and need to be around her all the time, she's resigned to their existence. This is my first dog all on my own, so I'm a bit prone to gushing.

I never post, but as soon as I saw this thread I knew I had to. Meet Pete, the sad little farmdog we rescued from my angry Mexican grandmother in Texas. We think he is a dachshund/schnauzer mix. My grandmother was very abusive towards him, tied him up outside all day, and then finally gave him to us when he was too much of a bother. Now he lives the posh lifestyle in Atlanta. My grandmother called him a titty baby, and he totally is. Because it's adorable. Click here for the full 600x784 image. Click here for the full 600x415 image. Click here for the full 800x707 image.

So many lovely mutts ITT. My dog Partner was a mutt, I'm afraid I don't have any digital pictures of him but he was part German Shepard and part Golden Retriever and part something else; he was a giant sweetheart. He was a medium sized dog but thought didn't realize that because he'd always try to sit on your lap! He was smart as a whip too, he would always figure out some way to get out of the back yard. It would have been a nuisnece if all he really did when he got out was wait for me at the bus stop after school He was my best friend for almost 15 years and it broke my heart when he passed away but he was a good dog who had a good life. Mutt dogs are the best dogs
