It's pretty random, only some apps do it, not all, but enough to make it frustrating. My favorite virtual desktop program for Windows is Desktops. It's incredibly bare-bones but it is the only one that will keep windows on the correct desktop 100% of the time.

The critical question I have when looking at virtual desktops for win7 is do they support different pinned items on each taskbar.

I upgraded to Windows 7 today, but now IRC refuses to connect to any server, in both Pidgin and miRC. Do I need to do something, or is it just a wacky malfunction? I can't find any info on Google about this.

It says after I quit that it uses agentctl.dll, which I presume was dumped with the upgrade. I guess I'll just have to wait until they upgrade themselves.

Just took some digging to find. Loving it again. But no pinned items on each taskbar. As for the dude with mIRC issues. I'm running mIRC on 2 of my Windows 7, 64 bit boxes - no problems what so ever. I'd run it in admin mode and see what happens.

How can I get Stepmania running in XP mode? I need to run it in XP mode because there's no driver for my Playstation->USB adapter for Windows 7, and no working 64 bit driver at all. I was able to get it going in Vista 64 with the 64 bit XP driver, but that's not working on 7. Anyway, I copied my whole Stepmania install over to my XP virtualmachine, but when I tried to launch it it said the drivers didn't support OpenGL or Direct3d. What do I do?

MS Agent was (edit: is, as I guess it still exists) a text-to-speech/recognition engine they had back in the day (and apparently through XP, at least), which mIRC supports in some way. Your connection problems have precisely zero to do with that.

I'm trying to copy 2.5gb to a USB drive and the transfer speed falls until its too slow to be practical. I've updated the motherboard drivers and this flash drive worked with XP, what gives? Is it supposed to take an hour to copy 2.5 gigs? Edit: I'm impatient, it ended up taking about 15 minutes. Guess the windows time remaining estimator is still broken. Is it a compressed file like a zip or an iso? If so, config your virus scanner to skip over those files or not scan the contents. It might be scanning it while trying to copy to the jump drive and massively slowing it down.

I have a legal windows 7 in my desktop and have purchased a windows 7 upgrade for my laptop from toshiba, but it's taking forever (they're mailing the cd) - can I use the key I'm using in my desktop in my laptop and then when the key arrives for the laptop update the key? (From a technical point of view, because I'd assume it isn't 100% legal, even though I don't think it's really wrong to do this) EDIT : Nevermind my desktop is 64 bits and my laptop 32 LastCaress fucked around with this message at 18:29 on Dec 19, 2009 |

I think he's referring to the Windows Explorer shortcut pinned to the taskbar by default which keeps recently viewed folders in a list if you right click on it. I don't know any way to stop it from displaying stuff there.

I got my copy of Win7 Pro off the MSDN before my account ended about two weeks before retail release, but just got around to installing it on a new computer. Built and posted fine, everything checks out, pop in the DVD and after it winds up... I get: Not sure what the issue is here, but looking around online a few others had it back on the RC. System is using LITE-ON optical drives, and installation is RTM x64. Kinda weird, since I installed x86 fine on my laptop a month ago twice without issues. If you need a full system spec I'll write it out, in the meantime I guess I can try to find another image of the disc or something. Kuroneko fucked around with this message at 23:00 on Dec 19, 2009 |

I'm buying Windows 7 from the Microsoft/Digital River student deal. Both Home Premium and Professional are $30. Given that I'll be installing fresh on an entirely new hard drive, is there any reason not to go for Professional? The only one I could think of (assuming my new processor and motherboard support XP mode, which, as they're new, I'm assuming they will) is that when Windows 8 comes along, I'll probably have to buy the Professional equivalent instead of the presumably-cheaper Home Premium equivalent if I want to do an upgrade.
