I'm mainly after stuff resembling Waits' spooky, experimental kind of style but any recommendations in this general area at all would be appreciated. Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica is definitely spooky and experimental. Weirder and less "musical" than Waits, but you might enjoy it anyway. For kickass music and poetic lyrics about shady characters and being down and out, you can't do much better than the Pogues. Their Irish folk-punk was the biggest influence on bands like Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys, but frontman/lyricist Shane McGowan always reminds me a bit of Waits during his maudlin, "hobo in the gutter" period. However, Waits was largely playing a character while narrating those songs, while McGowan WAS practically a hobo in the gutter. You should check out The North Sea by Raising the Fawn. The back half of the album is nautically themed and the first half (while not really about the sea at all) is suitably, uh, oceanic. (It toes the line between alt-rock and crescendo-abusing-post-rock in case you're wondering about what it sounds like)

I have been a massive fan of Fat Freddys Drop since i heard based on a true story, there simple grooves and thumping beats are something else and i would recommend them to anyone with an open and easy mind. i am trying to find something that is similar to them. my reggae and dub knowledge isn't that great so i could be missing out. There was a group called Jazz Jamacia and i think thats the closet group that i could find to them. if there is anyone out there who could help, it would be greatly appreciated peace and loving

RettroShocka posted:Rage Against The Machine. Downset has some stuff that closely resembles RATM. The second disc of Cypress Hill's Skull & Bones is all rap metal. Korn covered Ice Cube's Wicked on Life is Peachy. System of A Down covered Wu Tang's Shame On A Nigga. Anthrax and Public Enemy teamed up a bit in the early nineties and Anthrax even had their own rap/rock song, I'm The Man, but iirc it was only shown on tour footage. Also Tb Player forgot to mention Urban Dance Squad who were also very influential on Rage. Edit: Lastly All Music linked me to a group called Skunk Anansie. They don't really have anything comparable to rap, but their Rock end is reminiscent of Rage. Try the album Stoosh. Really though, someone asked the same question in the last ten pages and there were a lot of good links to early Biohazard material and other stuff.

In general I dislike rap, but there are a few rap songs I do really love and I'd like to find some more that suit my tastes. I don't really know anything about the genre, but songs I enjoy include the following: 99 Problems - Jay Z Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J Most Beastie Boys stuff, if that's considered rap Jump Around - House of Pain Tricky - Run-DMC Strait Outta Compton - N.W.A. Bring the Noise - Public Enemy

You should recommend me things that are like Baroness. If they are in any way reminiscent of A Horse Called Golgotha (a song, by Baroness), I will like them. And I will like you! Emphasis more on instrumental similarity than vocal similarity, I can handle whatever singer. I checked on last.fm, and a lot of the things they recommended as "similar" weren't really that similar, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. Being closer than Isis shouldn't be very hard. I need some help with the band Boris. Someone recommended them in this thread, and I now own pretty much half of their discography, about half of which I like. I am a hip-hop head at heart, so I don't know a lot about this type of noise/stoner/drone/doom rock or whatever, but I do know that certain songs by Boris are exactly what I like about rock. If anyone can recommend music akin to this, whether it be old or new, I would be very very grateful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtt3A6QZ0uY The song is only 2 minutes, even though the video says its longer.

I'm wondering if maybe you got disproportionately exposed to some particular artists or subgenres that aren't for you, and that's what turned you off rap, because the songs you listed are just popular stuff with big hooks. I'd recommend you start exploring the most popular albums by those artists like It Takes a Nation of Millions..., The Black Album and The Blueprint and the most accessible stuff you're going to find on most mainstream "All-Time Best Hip-Hop" lists -- The Chronic, All Eyez on Me, Illmatic, Black Star, Stankonia, The College Dropout, Food & Liquor. I'd guess you probably won't be into some of the rawer stuff like the Wu-Tang Clan and its followers, but other than that, I think you should just start with the basics that are recommended to anyone looking to get into hip-hop and then once you've defined your tastes a little, you can look for more specific recommendations.

I've been listening to two bands lately that play jangly, catchy 60s or 60s esque pop, but with extreme brevity- 2 minutes is a typical length for a song. Moby Grape and the La's come to mind.
