I am really surprised that Ableton actually runs on my netbook. It doesn't run great, but enough for me to fiddle around with. It plays really nice with the Korg nano set I have, too.

Very classy dude, I love them. That 2nd track especially. You've come a long way with your hats. Very clean. You really feel the 2step.

I've been listening to a lot of Moderat lately, and I love the atmosphere in their songs.

I've been trying to figure out how to make something like 3 Minutes Of. How do they get that beautiful, layered pad sound? Is it just a couple of string sounds, noise, and a ton of reverb? And how do they get the drop (at 1:52) to have such a huge sense of space?

how about you get it and learn how to use it? work on that attitude while you're at it, this isnt gbs.

Considering I asked specifically how to accomplish it from a DJ standpoint, a VST isn't going to do me much good (unless I'm using ableton) is it?

Thanks, the last of those I actually finished back in like September. I'm into taking bits of techno & funky into it now, though I'm not sure where it's going.

That part probably got ignored as this is the production thread. Have you tried the DJ Gear thread?

However he also suggested midi controllers as one of the ways to use it. So yes, vsts work and aren't solely for dj'ing, but in all likelihood that midi device will be perfect for controlling vsts.

I need a good set of headphones, my current ones make my music sound waay too bassy on actual speakers. So, what's a good set of headphones? Budget is ~$200, although I'm willing to go higher if everything in that price range is poor bang for buck. I live in Europe, if that makes any difference.

Just compensate for it, turn your basses down to the levels you hear in properly mixed tracks through you headphones.

Ya, in my experience, you really shouldn't mix on headphones. It messes with your perception of the music and it changes so much from headphone to headphone. Get some nice reference monitors.

For $200 your best bet for closed-back headphones is Sennheiser HD-25 or maybe the Ultrasone DJ1 Pro. I've owned the HD-25 and used the Ultrasones quite a bit and I'm fairly confident I could produce a good mix on either pair without too much fuss.

What kind of audio interface/sound card are you using? You might want to allocate a bit of that money to an interface with a strong headphone amp as the big closed-back cans like to have some extra juice before they really start producing big tight bass response. Also mixing in 16/44.1 sucks balls. An NI Audio2 and Sennheiser Hd-280Pros would be a decent starter setup for around $200

I mixed a few tracks on 280s a few years back and they turned out alright, here's one:

sounds like amateur hour, sorry. nothing good rhythmically or melodically. and the sounds are just eh. but they do sound "warm" in a digital vst sort of way, so youre making progress.

These are earphones, they're what I mix on primarily and I find them to be a bit more transparent than headphones due to their nature

Yes, I do. You start with a spooky theme and then decide to augment it with a single vocalsample that sounds ripped off from a 1996 porn kings track (look it up), and overuse it. It doesnt work. Break it off and put it into a new project if you like it, is my advice. Stay true to the original concepts.

I like the sample, but not when the rising sort of arpeggio synth is happening. When it's just bumping along on chords or when the arpeggio falls in tandem with the sample it's neat though.

Just started reading this thread because a friend got me interested in the whole "electronic music on the computer" hobby and my copy of Ableton Intro plus the EMU XBOARD 25 should be here by Monday

I wanted to say thanks to whoever mentioned the ASIO4ALL driver-thing, which finally makes my old DMXFire soundcard not freeze when trying to enable ASIO in Ableton. Maybe this should be included in the OP?

I also wanted to ask if there are any online resources that explain how to achieve certain popular effects in electronic music, or if there are any books that are a "must have" in gerneral, for people doing audio stuff (e.g. on software, mixing, mastering, effects, etc.).

Ask what you want to know in here.

You'll have a really really really long road ahead, and there are no shortcuts. On the other hand, you'll have it better than I did in the 90s because you have a search engine and Youtube at your disposal :v:.
