I actually made a playlist along these lines on 8tracks a few months back. It's more on the post-punk side of music, but I think you'd like most of it and only two of the bands you listed are on it (Sleater-Kinney & The Slits): http://8tracks.com/steve112sms/female-vocalists-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-hating-high-pitched-vocals-and-love-the-songs

help!

You might have been buying this for Christmas and it's too late now, but I think he'd probably like bands such as Liquid Tension Experiment, Spastic Ink, Queensr˙che and maybe Spiral Architect more than Porcupine Tree. Dream Theater is not really prog rock, but rather progressive metal. Porcupine Tree is kind of in between the two. The bands I listed are prog metal, like DT.

Honestly, all the remasters are stellar. You're correct about Fleeting Joys, few bands actually hit the mark they achieve with both their albums.
Hrm, let's see...
I recommend also seeking out some Astrobrite, and there's this fantastic lo-fi dude by the name of Fluker that really hit the spot for me (i described it as what if Loveless cost 1 dollar to make instead of 50 jabillion)

Also, seconding the place to bury strangers, both albums are fantastic.

I'm looking for some recommendations for the mix of piano, keyboard synths, nintendo sounding noises, combined with either slow or fast music.

Here are some of my favorite bands that best fit the description:

Faster electronic:
Chiodos, The Faint, Panic At The Disco (first album), The Medic Droid, Metro Station, Machinae Supremacy

Slower electronic:
The Postal Service, Death Cab, Mates of State, The Anniversary, Play Radio Play

I'm drawing a blank now I'm sure theres a few more that I could throw in. But any band with synths that remind you of tetris or any 8 bit style sound would be perfect. If you were readin the list and thought of any bands that would fit in nicely, please let me know.

If you like The Faint, you might like some other Electroclash bands or electroclash influenced bands. Try maybe Tiga or Fischerspooner.

Tiga - Far From Home http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfJ8prhLbtQ

Fischerspooner - Emerge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8Jth4UtsY0

The chiptune movement seems to be made up of a lot of smaller, independent bands or individual artists with Crystal Castles being the obvious chiptune influenced cross-over act, but start with Anamanaguchi and then see if you're interested in 'pure' chip-tune from there if you like lo-fi, clearly synthetic 'nintendo' sounds.

Anamanaguchi - Sting Operation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApCvhwbXytM

EDIT: If you're looking for music that's fairly poppy but utilises lo-fi electonics, The Rentals have Moogs out the rear end:

I'm looking for some slow, somber jazz. Examples of what I'm looking for include the songs performed by Annie Ross and the Low Note Quintet in Robert Altman's movie Short Cuts, Deanna Storey's songs on the Synecdoche, NY soundtrack, and some of Chet Baker's slower stuff. I really would like to get in to reggae. Not so much the plodding, Bob Marley stuff. I am more interested in the stuff that is louder and more energetic, almost closer to the ska side of things. The best example I can give is the vocals from the song Tarantula by Pendulum, without the drum n bass elements (I'm actually a big DnB fan, but I'm looking more for acoustic stuff).

Uhh, you can't really combine dancehall vocals (like in the Pendulum song) with ska riddims... But maybe it isn't obvious if you don't know much about JA music.

For some more traditional deejay stuff try these guys:

Dillinger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB4rDqeiQTQ
Prince Far-I: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pXzf0cdEvA
Tappa Zukie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9YT20VkQXA
Eek-A-Mouse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyEwTM0n04c

From the mid '80s onwards that kinda stuff tends to be electronic, a lot of '70s reggae fans don't care for digital riddims but gently caress that:

This is like the majority of what I've been listening to for the past few years, so I think I can help you out with a few bands:

Ahleuchatistas
Bear vs. Shark
bygones (this is actually a collab of the Tera Melos guitarist and Zach Hill)
By The End of Tonight (did a split cd with Tera Melos so maybe you've heard of them)
Circle Takes the Square (more on the emo/hardcore side of things, but they show some promise)
Holy Smokes (another Zach Hill collab)
La Dispute
Minus The Bear
Rx Bandits (they're more post-hardcore or ska-whatever but I love them)
Team Sleep (they might not seem to fit on this list but Chino Moreno + Zach Hill + Rob Crow is amazing)
The Ladies (Jesus Christ another Zach Hill project - this time with just Rob Crow of Pinback)
The Number 12 Looks Like You
The Sound of Animals Fighting (just the first cd fits here though)
This Town Needs Guns
Zach Hill's solo project

Thats's about all I have that I think you'd be interested in. I might have other stuff but if I do it's not in my music folder.

Also, someone else post some more stuff. I need more post-hardore and math rock. Someone should really make a new thread.

Bitter:Sweet have two amazing albums, The Mating Game and Drama, both with sultry, sexy female vocals courtesy of Shana Halligan. They kind of veer into trip-hop sometimes, but they're generally more "loungey" than Portishead or Massive Attack, with an upbeat retro flair. Two of my favorites from them are "Dirty Laundry" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvQgBrQnqzk ) and "The Mating Game" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VljGLcxA1U&feature=related ).

I can't forget Lovage, a "supergroup" comprised of NMD favorite Mike Patton, Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields, and Dan the Automator producing. Their one album is practically a soundtrack for seduction, with trip-hoppy beats and Patton's growling playing off Charles' vocals that just drip sex. Here's "To Catch a Thief" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2c2aa_GMVA ) and "Strangers on a Train" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3Ad03oRWcI&feature=related ).

You may also like Goldfrapp, particularly their first and fourth albums Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree. Those two are a lot darker, more down-tempo and trip-hoppy than the others. Here's a track called "Lovely Head": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBq-XCKePWg

My latest musical discovery is a Swedish group called Koop, who specialize in jazzy electronica constructed from samples, with original vocal tracks. Their song "Koop Island Blues" pretty much epitomizes sexy, lush, exotic female vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTTGX27fsA4&feature=PlayList&p=ED95475761A49CC8&index=0&playnext=1

You should check out a genre called broken beat, a close friend of mine loves it and he'd honestly be better at nu-jazz recs than I am. The broken style is a bit more of a funky, choppy, and sometimes just downright confusing drum rhythm. Daz said they started it as an offshoot of drum and bass and nujazz. It's not a big genre, if anything I'd consider it a sub-sub genre but that's just me. Another name to check out is Domu, IIRC he just wasn't having fun anymore and quit music entirely until further notice. It's a bit harder to find things about him because he shut down his online presence.

At The Drive-In were the best post-hardcore band ever. Their last album Relationship of Command is a classic of the genre. Members went on to form The Mars Volta who are less good but worth a shot.

Also you might as well check out King Crimson especially their 80's work which has been described as proto-math rock.

I'm looking for any songs that are similar to Yo La Tengo's "Damage".

All of their other songs bore the hell outta me but I love that one.

It's been a while since I've posted here, and my tastes have changed.
I'm looking for music with some fairly heavy guitar parts, but nothing fast or metal.
I've already explored the 60's, metal, some classic rock, and world music but don't know where to go from here.

Example songs:

I really like the guitar parts, singer, lyrics, and especially the subject matter.

Less of a guitar presence but once again, excellent subject matter/singer.

Great guitar presence

Are you familiar with the shoegaze genre? Not emphasis on singing, but it relies a lot on guitars (usually slower riffs). Here's a few tracks I think might fit in

Catherine Wheel - Crank

Swervedriver - Duel

As for my own request, I'm looking for some remixes of Lady GaGa tracks. I heard the Starsmith remix of Bad Romance yesterday, and I was so hooked on the disco sound of it. I also have no idea where to look for remixes, and all I found by myself were some crappy club remixes which I don't fancy.
