London Calling, as mentioned above, is considered their best album and does have some "funkier" stuff, but they really put those influences on display (to varied success) on the triple album Sandanista! (which contains "Bankrobber") and their last proper album Combat Rock (which contains "Rock the Casbah").

It's been quite a few years since I've listened to it but it's am amazing album. I wouldn't bother checking out any of their other stuff though, it doesn't hold up to this album. It's not exactly mathrock/mathcore but it's got a lot of those elements. The vocals do grow on you despite being emo/screamo. Also, these youtube vids suck for audio quality. I've recently listened to excerpts of works of Philip Glass and would like to get more into this artist. Problem is, his discography is massive, spanning from his ensemble to solo works to symphonies and more. I have no idea where to start. What would you consider good entry points/must-haves/milestones from Glass?

I'm feeling blown away by Mary Ann Hobbs' Wild Angels compilation - in particular Brackles - LHC, Untold - Discipline, Hudson Mohawke - Spotted [Neve Mix] and Legion of Two - And Now We Wait. I'm really into Bibio, edIT, Hudson Mohawke and Flying Lotus right now and come from a background of being crazy into Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Venetian Snares and I want to know where to go. Take Wild Angels as a start point - I really love the music and when I look it up on last.fm or Youtube it's all "bro, dubstep", but I feel like 90% of dubstep is all wobbly-bassed Eastern Jam knock-offs. I'm clearly illiterate in the genre but don't really want to take the time to wade through crap, or the minor EPs of the people on Wild Angels, to get to what I want. I'm pretty much trying to narrow a large spectrum of things I need to taste into a couple of quality, interesting artists/albums to pursue. Even another compilation recommendation would be welcome - I'm really enjoying some Fabric and FabricLive stuff right now as well. Cheers, NMD.

You're on the right track looking up Fabric mixes, a lot of the popular good djs lately have released one and they cover a lot of genres so you'll probably find a variety of stuff you like. As for finding new artists, I would suggest looking up which labels some of your favorite artists release tracks on, and getting other releases. I'm not really a dubstep head so there's probably stuff more similar to what you talk about but a few artists releasing good stuff that aren't too wobbly are Martyn, Joy Orbison, Rustie, Mala and Nosaj Thing. Also try Modeselektor & Apparat's album 'Moderat'

So the last few months I've become a huge fan of Tegan and Sara and recently I've especially been getting into their first two albums; Under Feet Like Ours and This Business of Art. I'm not great with music genres but it's kind of indie rock/folk or something? Well I'm looking for other artists that sound similiar. So far I have come up with Ani Difranco which is pretty close. I tried looking at last.fm but I think most of the similar artists are based on their later stuff, which I also love but it's not what I'm looking for right now. Any advice?

Could anyone point me in the direction of something similar to Skalpel? For my money the Ninja Tune label has done no wrong in that department. A good starter album would be one of their samplers. Xen Cuts, or The Art of Zen Relaxation series are great. I think Jaga Jazzist, 9 Lazy 9, or perhaps Cinematic Orchestra might be what you're looking for, but they aren't as overtly jazzy as 1954. If you want to branch out a bit more in the genre try Blockhead's album "Music By The Cavelight". It's a bit more hip-hop oriented than the others, but will connect you to the other half of the genre and lead into stuff like DJ Vadim etc. Don't worry, this video is SUPPOSED to look lossy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCbbNOS8Cyw bipolarbear fucked around with this message at 07:51 on Jan 12, 2010 |

I started listening to the Pogues a couple days ago, and now theyre easily one of my favorite bands. I've got Rum Sodomy & the Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace With God, and while theyre both fantastic I think I prefer RS&L better because Shane's singing seems clearer and stronger, even if Grace is a bit more experimental. I'm looking for similar artists. Not necessarily Irish folk music, but music with a similar punk attitude combined with that same sorta sense of... history? that Shane conveys. The Clash sorta fit in this.

I don't much care for any of the bands that try to ape them, I think the real thing (i.e. Clancy Brothers, Dubliners, Christy Moore even) is much closer to Shane's vision, but The Men They Couldn't Hang are a British folk-punk band with a sort of a similar vibe, they got a couple of good LPs. Also, Red Roses for Me is easily the best Pogues LP.

Yeah, I should have said I tried listening to stuff like Dropkick Murphys & some other American bands and they seemed to be just cheap knockoffs with a bit more rock thrown in & without Shane's songwriting and charisma.
