etard knievel posted:You're on the right track looking up Fabric mixes, a lot of the popular good djs lately have released one and they cover a lot of genres so you'll probably find a variety of stuff you like. As for finding new artists, I would suggest looking up which labels some of your favorite artists release tracks on, and getting other releases. I'm not really a dubstep head so there's probably stuff more similar to what you talk about but a few artists releasing good stuff that aren't too wobbly are Martyn, Joy Orbison, Rustie, Mala and Nosaj Thing. Also try Modeselektor & Apparat's album 'Moderat' Actress and 2562 are good too.

The guitar player's Eddie Hazel and he has a pretty particular style, but his career was kind of hosed up because of drug/brain issues. The albums following Maggot Brain didn't have much input from him until 'Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On' which has Eddie getting some on just about every track. So check out that one and the Funkadelic S/T. Nothing that really approaches Maggot Brain, though.

I'd like some electronic music that I can workout to. I mostly listen to ambient or minimal when I'm listening to electronic music and that doesn't really work when I'm lifting weights. Would like some artists that consistently gets my juices flowing.

Someone else will post better recommendations but Morcheeba - Big Calm and Portishead - Dummy are pretty standard trip-hop, and Gorillaz - Gorillaz and the dub remix album of Gorillaz (Space Monkeys - Laika Come Home) sometimes have a similar sound to Massive Attack. Portishead's entire discography is pretty sick, really. According to Wikipedia Amon Tobin is trip-hop (who'd have thought?) so if you ever find yourself downloading some because he's mentioned, go for Bricolage and Supermodified for the most trip-hop sounding stuff, but it's generally fast. Maybe YouTube some of the tracks first to make sure it's what you want. Can someone recommend anything that I'll enjoy if I liked Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information. I know, I know, it's one album in a loving huge genre, but I'd just like someone to recommend two or three albums to get me going. Thanks!

I'm looking for music similar to Lou Barlow's work on the Kids soundtrack. Both ambient stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1cU2hbnP30 -- the people in the comments there suggest Boards of Canada, I guess that's a good start. [Does anyone know what produces sounds like this? Maybe a synth flute reversed or something?] And also the more rock stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GJ9IhY6BpE -- sounds kind of like some early Sonic Youth to me, but a little cleaner and with more reverb.

As to "where should I go with soul", the artists you've listed span a big chunk of time and styles. My usual suggestion to people is to connect groups/people you like via cross membership. Like Curtis Mayfield, check the Impressions. Like The Temptations, check Eddie Kendricks solo. The better thing to do is to follow labels, and the artists you picked are the big ones. Stevie Wonder (Tamla/Motown), Al Green (Hi/Motown), Isaac Hayes (Stax). Get familiar with the Stax & Motown singles, since they define the soul sound for most people and there's a ton of different label comps for both of 'em. Hi, Curtom, Back Beat, T-Neck, Chess were also big national labels worth checking out. Atco, too, since they had Donny Hathaway, King Curtis, Otis Redding, Roberta Flack (I think) but the label wasn't genre specific. Best poo poo's regional/deep cuts, though.
