I'm assuming the answer can be quite different if you're on Mac of PC. I usually need a program to break the copy protection and save it as a Video TS folder on my computer, then use another program to convert the Video TS folder to individual iPod Video formated files. On a Mac I use "Mac The Ripper" and "Handbreak"

Update on the playlist problem: judging from what people on Apple's support forums are saying it, it seems like it may be an inherent flaw of the iPhone 3.1.3 firmware. Waiting for Apple to fix it, sadly.

Handbrake has removed CSS decryption in the newest version. On a Mac, it can be handled by having VLC installed. On Windows, it won't use VLC, but DVD43 might work, which decrypts on-the-fly. Handrake has iPod Touch presets, so that is taken care of. It will automatically select a "main title" to rip (based on length, I think, not sure). This works for most disks, but there are some exceptions. For movies with an "extended" version on-disk, it will probably select the extended version. Is that the one you want? Handbrake can't decide for you, or even know there's a choice between multiple "main" movies, it will just select the longest one. Obviously, with TV show disks, there are usually multiple main titles as well. In short, you can train someone to use Handbrake and it is relatively easy to use once set up. However, it is not able to do everything for you, so it will still occasionally require some thinking on the user's part.

Is there a way to shut off my iPod without holding the home/sleep button? Mine was stolen a year ago, I got it back cracked and the sleep button doesn't work at all. Safari hosed up, but I had to run the battery out to restart it and fix Safari, which is a pain in the rear end.

My process is: DVD Decrypter to an ISO image. (Is DVD43 the new replacement for this?) Handbrake from ISO image. Dump file on your iPod. If its a DVD of a bunch of episodes from a show, you will have to do each episode in the Handbrake queue. Philthy fucked around with this message at 03:00 on Feb 14, 2010 |

Yeah - I've got an iPod Touch and I use it. It works fine as long as you leave it plugged in and charging, and you don't cover it with your pillow. I did cover it a bit one night, and it got a little hot by morning. Nothing wrong with it, though - but it pays to be careful

Philthy posted:My process is: DVD43 decrypts on the fly as the disc is read, so technically, you could just go into the DVD drive, Select All, and drag to a folder on your hard drive. I don't actually use DVD43 myself, but that is my understanding. I suggested it as the simplest solution because (assuming it works correctly) it should be pretty transparent. I don't use it because it seems I always run into weird (newer) discs that software X or software Y has issues ripping, so I alternate between DVDFab, DVD Decryptor, DVD Shrink....whatever gets the job done and fits my needs.

Sorry if this has already been covered, all the ipod threads are huge and I didn't see it mentioned in the OP's. Is there a way to run google maps offline and cache certain areas on an ipod touch? I don't actually have one but I'm strongly considering buying one for my trip to Europe in a few months. Assuming the answer is yes, how much space would a decent quality map of a city like Paris take up? I've never travelled before and I'm going to be by myself so this would give me huge piece of mind. Any info on this or any other type offline map solution would be greatly appreciated.

Try asking non-technological people for directions on an ipod in a foreign language and have fun. You can get small pocket-size ones for free from AAA if you are a member.

So I just lost my iPod touch unfortunately while walking in downtown Chicago I'm guessing there is no way to stop somebody from going through my e-mails, or anything like that. Any recommendations on things I can do? Think I've thought of are: -Change e-mail passwords -Go back in all applications and change login passwords (facebook, twitter, etc.) Though it's kind of tempting to see if anybody uses the thing... I use G-mail and it logs all activity from IP addresses and the thing should show up as an IMAP account. I guess my only concern really is e-mail and that I use the Mint.com application, but there is absolutely nothing in there that can be linked back to me. Just a list of recent purchases on my credit card and the last four numbers. Ugh... feel like $300 just fell out of my wallet, and I September is so far away to wait for the inevitable update. Edit: if my iPod is backed up on my iTunes, is there any way to see what Notes I had on the thing? I know it's nothing private, but I'm sort of curious what info I left on it.

It's bad enough they have your e-mail, but you don't want them keeping access to new messages or sending. For the future, you should really use the lock function. If you have an app that shows your bank account info and you don't lock that's amazing.

Every password was changed, and you can deactivate the Mint.com app remotely actually. It doesn't show any information you can actually do anything with (last 4 digits of accounts), I mainly use it to check the balance on my credit card. I've also had no new IP addresses try to access my G-mail account, so I'm hoping that either a bum got it or it conveniently fell into the Chicago river.

Gah, I'm trying to jailbreak my iPod Touch (2g 2.2.1) for the first time and I've been following the instructions in the op. When I connect my iPod and open quickpwn, it doesn't find the iPod. It just says "Please connect the device you would like to modify". And above that it has a pictures of the iPhones and an iPod touch. I can't click on them or anything. Google has been no help, and it's been difficult to find any good information on jailbreaking a 2.2.1 touch with a Mac.

I recently lost my 1G Touch and bought a new 3G Touch. It's really great, but for some reason every so often it'll start playing music while in sleep mode. Is this a known bug? I think it may have to do with receiving IMs in the AIM app, but I'm not 100% sure.

I just picked up an iPod Touch (thanks to seeing that it's possible to charge without a laptop thanks to this thread), and I'm trying to upload some videos onto it with secondary audio tracks. Now, iTunes can understand them and play the alternate tracks, but I can't find how to get the iPod Touch to let me switch tracks. Is this possible? The files in question are already MPEG-4s.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a windshield mount for the 3G Touch? It seems like there are millions of them, most of them with not so solid reviews. The car in question is an RSX, not sure if that matters or not. I'm also kind of unsure about the placement of the mount itself. Just looking to see what you guys use and how.

PFlats posted:2 quick questions about accessories: I just got a nike+ after discovering they were only 19 dollars and I was horribly out of shape (actually I was fully aware of the last part). I just used it today, it's pretty neat. Keeps track of your distance, lets you put in your weight to estimate calories burned, audibly updates you on how far you have left and when your walk/run is done, keeps track of your speed, keeps your history when you're done too. You can calibrate it for your walking/running style if it seems off with the factory settings. You can set it for free run/walk where I guess you just go till you're tired and it keeps you updated on everything, or time/distance/calorie goals. There's also an online site where you can register and iTunes will automatically send in your run history when you sync and graph and keep track of it. You can take workout challenges and challenge other people you know with +'s(I haven't tried the site out at all yet though). Only thing I was disappointed in finding out was that you can't replace the battery in the sensor. Says it lasts for 1000 hours of use though, so as long as you take it out of the shoes if you use them for something else $20 dollars every 1.5 years at worst isn't bad. You can get a little shoe lace pouch on amazon for about 3 dollars so you don't have to buy the special Nike shoes, but I found the shoes were cheaper at some stores than they were online if you weren't too picky about color (or you like weird/bright colors). So one annoyance I've come across with my Touch is that it doesn't seem to understand the Disc tag - iTunes will sort a multi-disc set as one album, with the tracks like Disc 1 1 - 20, Disc 2 1 - 20, Disc 3 1 - 20. So if I start playback on Disc 1 track 1, it plays all tracks in order. This is nice, because it shows just one album in iTunes. But putting it on the Touch, I get one album, but it ignores the sorting, so I get something like 1 1 1 2 2 2 3 3 3, and so forth. It's really, really irritating. Is there some way to get this to work the way it should? Edit: I removed them, then added them back to the ipod, and now it all works.
