What this sausage party needs is a big dollop of ketchup! Too bad I didn't make any. :(

Alright, Television, Minutemen and Doctors of Madness. What other really early punk/underground rock (I think that's what Television is. Genre's confuse me) should I look for? Those three off the top of my head all seem to have incredible songwriting and great technical proficiency.

Bonus points if I can find it easily online and also in vinyl.

Surprisingly, you want ambient techno (is there such a thing as ambient house too?). I can't recommend anything though, cos it's all unbearably boring and whatever I've happened to download I've immediately deleted after listening.

I'm looking for something with post-rock stylings but with a lot of brass. Basically something a lot like the second half of Sigur Ros' "Se Lest"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rxlg25V0Kw

Another good example is the beginning buildup in Godspeed You Black Emperor's "Storm". Are there any bands that use this sound/instrumentation combo more often?

edit:

Another thing I'm looking for is something that sounds like Rasputina's "Gingerbread Coffin"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzfSpkCYMTM

kind of this gloomy melodic goth with an industrial tinge. Mostly I'm looking for stuff that sounds like the violin/cello melodies.

Well eat poo poo HAI 'cause unbearably boring music is my raison d'etre! There's pretty much an 'ambient' version of every kind of electronic dance music other than hardcore maybe. Even LTJ bukem is kind of like 'ambient jungle', lmao. All the listed artists are good but here's some others.

More ambient house recs: Future Sound of London, Banco De Gaia, Orbital, Global Communication and Loop Guru

Ambient techno: Pole, Monolake, Deadbeat, Pete Namlook, Jan Jelinek, Luomo/Vladislav Delay, Anders Ilar, Deepchord, Basic Channel, Thomas Fehlmann

Ambient breaks (also crosses over a lot with Downtempo and Trip-Hop, this is what I'd call BoC and Shadow): Nosaj Thing, Bonobo, Nightmares on Wax, Air, Wagon Christ, Plaid, some of Autechre, Amon Tobin and Aphex Twin's stuff but they also get hard and aggro

Also try the stuff called psydub or psychill (Bluetech, Entheogenic, Solar Fields)

Also click the ? under my name cause i'm pretty sure i've reccomended loungey / downtempo stuff to ppl in this thread before and i don't have a very good memory.

If you like Television then check out the other CBGB bands that were around at the same time, as many of them bridged the gap between trad rock and punk and as such retained a lot more technical skill and songwriting craft than their louder, rougher offspring. The most notable ones would be Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Patti Smith Group, early Talking Heads and The New York Dolls.
After that if you want louder, thrashier music more in the vein of the Minutemen then check out the whole UK punk scene. Most of them aren't as good at playing their instruments but still manage to crank out masterpieces. Specifically, go for The Buzzcocks 'Singles Going Steady', The Damned's debut 'Damned Damned Damned' and basically anything by The Jam.

I don't know how familiar you are with punk so I've kept that fairly entry level, but let me know you get on with those bands and I can point you to more similar stuff :shobon:

I'm looking for opinions on the best Motown collections, or other soul compilations for that matter. For Stax, this is probably the meatiest option among a great many:

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Stax-Volt-Singles-1959-1968/dp/B000002IQU

But I lack a really good Motown compilation (of which there are also a positively staggering number available). Emphasis should be more on a concentration of great songs than an exhaustive categorical representation of every drat artist, and a reasonable price point wouldn't hurt either.

If you're not familiar with it, you might like slowcore. When it was still relevant, the genre kind of went hand in hand with post-rock, to some extent at least. Check out Low, Red House Painters, Codeine, Ida, Bedhead and Sun Kil Moon. There might be some elements in their music you'd enjoy.

I saw 'Crazy Heart' the other night and quite enjoyed some of the downbeat country near the end. I'm already quite a big fan of Calexico and like the cinematic, world-hopping sound that they have too, so they might be a good 'guide band.' Basically I'm looking for some mournful country, ideally with some slide guitar because I'm a sucker for it, that steers clear of the cheese that I usually find off-putting.

Here's a couple of songs I guess you could branch out from if you like em. These are more folky/altcountry/outlaw than standard country though, I don't know a lot about that.

Ramblin' Man - Hank Williams
Moonshiner - both Bob Dylan's and Uncle Tupelos version is good, Uncle Tupelo's probably more country.
Cocaine - Jackson Browne
London Homesick Blues - Jerry Jeff Walker
Goodnight Irene - Leon Russell (from Hank Wilson's Back!)
Methamphetamine - Old Crow Medicine Show (more bluegrassy)
Tecumsah Valley - Townes Van Zandt (and the rest of A Gentle Evening With Townes Van Zandt, a great great album)

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy is the most mournful alt-country there is. It's extremely low-key, but it's worth a shot.

1. I have come to enthusiastically appreciate the songwriting of Laura Nyro and Carole King, which appears to have been the main influence behind Rundgren's amazing Something/Anything? But disappointingly, Tapestry and Eli are both pretty barren beyond side 1, and Rundgren's follow-up record is odd. Is there any hidden gem late 60's and/or early 70's stuff in that vein that I may not have crossed?

2. What's with the high-production values on Harvest by Neil Young? I love "A Man Needs a Maid", is there anything in his later library like that? I always loved Nash and Crosby's solo work, never got into Neil Young, but I was pleasantly surprised by that big-budget sound.

Re: the alt-country stuff discussed above... the masterpiece of downbeat alt-country in recent memory has to be Bless You by The Court and Spark. "To See the Fires", and "Fade Out to Little Arrow" are fantastic tracks in that mood.
