ab0z posted:So any old guy can just buy one, but nobody that has done so has thought to dyno their $16,000 engine? Sure, you can probably find approximate values, but you're not going to know exactly what they run since it depends on intake, carburetor, and header design. I believe they are generally around 850hp @ 9k RPM.

Yeah obviously it will depend on state of tune etc, but I was curious to see a power curve. I assume they make all the power up top and are virutally incapable of idling normally but I wanted to see just how bad it was. I still want one of those engines.

Just did a little googling and apparently NASCAR engines make a lot less horsepower than I thought.quote:NASCAR didnt post any official numbers, but Stewarts engine - built by Mark Cronquist, head of Joe Gibbs motor shop - pulled around 462 to 464 effective horsepower, according to those familiar with the results. This was following the Daytona 500 this year. Heh, you can build a Ford 302 stroker to make more power than that naturally aspirated, and in a usable RPM range.

I assume the limiting factor there is the restrictor plate? I wonder how the numbers would look with something like this bolted on?

Yeah that's a plate engine. They can vary from track to track, but they won't be wildly different. In addition to tons of horsepower up top, they have low end grunt as well to get out of the pits or out of the corners on a short track or road course. Most of the performance is dictated by gearing rather than the engine.

I remember hearing that the road course cars are completely different cars then the normal oval cars.

In terms of internals, not really, a 358 is a 358. Most teams go so far as to have a favorite carb that they feel is tuned to its peak and they use that at many tracks, even if the rest of the car isn't the same. Engines stay pretty similar for all the tracks, even plate tracks. They use different engines just because they wear out over time, but construction is pretty basic. Road course cars are drastically different than oval cars in terms of chassis and suspension. e- like this week, they are at Martinsville. Shortest track they run all year, at around a half mile. Flat turns as well. To be fast here you need power out of the turns, and great brakes. The brakes they use here are wildly different than other types of tracks, but the engine isn't that different. To get the exit speed up, they'll run an aggressive rear gear, like a 5.xx or 6.xx, something silly like that. At Charlotte they may run a 3.xx, for higher speeds but less torque via the throttle. The engines are very similar, the carb may be the same unit at both tracks. oh and the carburetor? essentially a stock Holley 4150. Goddamn, I wish Ford hadn't caved to the "We don't want our 5.0 Mustangs being outdragged by a drat 4 cylinder" bullshit and canceled both the XR4Ti and the SVO Mustang. The SVO Mustang in particular had SO MUCH POTENTIAL, and looked awesome to boot.

Not sure if this qualifies but it's still cool as hell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsmiIeAkE-o&feature=related 5 axis CNC mill cutting a V8 engine block out of a solid block of aluminum. Crazy to watch one of these machines milling compound curves and such with every axis moving independently all at once AND being able to hold a few microns tolerance on the finishing operations (width of human hair = 80+ microns). Company I work for has 3, 5 axis mills like this. You can drat near make anything you can draw in CAD so long as you can get a tool to every nook and hold it properly.
