Not completely related to that Lada on Kijiji, but I remember back in the 80s there was an ad in the paper announcing a special discount ($500) for Lada sedans in safety orange. This was back in Soviet days and the factories apparently kept making orange ones even though they were hardly selling any (planned economy, right), so if you were willing to choose that color it knocked like 10% off the price of the car.

Good thing you looked around the web for that link... instead of clicking the link in the post above yours. I love those photos. Judging by the way its built, it's something a farmer could have put together in his barn in the 50s.

Doh! I was sent to some 376mpgcarsomethingsometing.com website, and I guess it redirected to there. :/ I also found it a bit weird that they kept saying "and the record still stands!", when people have been doing basically the same thing ever since. I guess you can say it's the highest MPG for an Opel. For comparison, in the last Shell Eco Challenge some Canadians got 2,487.5 MPG in a car that was almost equally impractical. It's almost ironic that the only thing those cars are good for is burning gas, making them the least green vehicles on the planet. I mean at least with a SUV you're theoretically doing something with the gas you burn.

If I could sell my car tomorrow and snatch that up, I would in a HEARTBEAT. And have 1 - 2k left over for a mechanical once-over, suspension and wheels/tires, and be happy for a few years. I had a near identcal '78 with better paint, wheels, suspension, 1/2 cage and it's still one of the best cars I ever owned.

Anyone want a "cheap" project H1? Cheap being relative of course... I'm always on the hunt for a cheap project or cheap H1/HMMWV parts but this thing came along... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_rdc=1&item=250611857305 Like none other currently listed indeed. "I didn't bother to keep the inspection current...." You mean the DMV might have an issue with the rusted brake calipers, questionable parking brake.... Or the 5-6" Hole on the c-pillar and roll bar on the passenger side? You know the structural part that holds on the roof? The seller registered an account on one of the big humvee forums flaming the hummer community to boot: quote:It amazes me that you guys say the truck is ruined. Do any of you off road at all? There is a layer of crusty mud/sand/iron oxide on the cast iron parts, big deal - What do y'all think the trucks look like in Afghanistan? Ah yes Afghanistan, well known for it's salt water environment. At least the guy was honest with his advertisement and actual vehicle condition, and he wheeled the gently caress out of it, but its still a rust bucket. It should be fun to see how much this goes for. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a [rust free] humvee rolling chassis project for $7,000 in LA last year.
