Philippe and Ultra Peanut ran around naked because that's what 5 year old kids do. They haul their clothes off and run around giggling without having any loving clue why, and then an adult chases after them trying to get them dressed again which makes them run faster and laugh harder.

DocFrance posted:Philippe is five just as Calvin is six and Bart is ten. This is never brought up as any kind of serious issue, at most you get a self-aware joke about it. Bill Watterson never said "Hmm yes, let's have a story arc exploring the deep philosophical ramifications of a boy who has been six for almost a decade." What does what Bill Watterson did or didn't do have to do with what Chris Onstad is or isn't doing?

I'm saying it's more about the tragedy of parents getting old and things never feeling the same as the first time than it is about a magic otter boy who never ages, and that people are reading into the "Philippe is five" thing too much.

Amateur Sketch posted:Also, the multiple pictures of "Phillipe: Age 5" are pretty creepy. There is a disturbing amount of complexity behind Phillipe being 5. It is funny that they all look like Phillipe did in the early days, with a slightly more exaggerated :3 mouth and line eyes. See, he does age.

Exactly. And I think the creepy insistence that Philippe ask for that dinner was a way of making sure living with his mom again is what is really best for him.

Here, let me cheer things up! I re-read the Trip to Germany arc, as I visited Germany last year for work and wanted to see if I could use my newfound encyclopedic knowledge of Germany to pick up on any references to stuff in the strips. Like Ray, I flew into Frankfurt, and like Ray, I initially had problems getting a hang on the German lingo (though I did recall what "pommes oder brot" meant thanks to the strip). Unlike Ray, I did not make a suit out of copies of "Der Spiegel" nor did I partake of any fingernail schnapps (I stuck to several rounds of "ein großes hefeweizen, bitte" for my nightly imbibing). Sadly I didn't get to partake of a currywurst, either.

Austrians just really don't like anything they aren't familiar with (e.g., neologisms, non-Austrians, pubic hair that isn't platinum blonde and severely shaped). Isn't Austria still like 92% anti-Semitic? I wash my hands of these people who mocked my t-shirt with the bear carrying a big beer.

^^Edit: Well it hasn't been up in three days. Yeah basically I explained that there are real animals (the cats, Todd, and some others), the robots, and the stuffed animals (Lyle, Teodore, Philippe) and even though they are animals, robots, and stuffed animals, they still lead adult lives (save Philippe.)

NEW STRIP Nightlights are simultaneously reassuring and disquieting. One of Philippe's recipes in the first cookbook mentions appetizers his mom and dad made in their house in Bourdeaux before the fire. And now his mom lives in Iowa. That little tidbit makes the sadness of the pork chop in the last strip that much worse. It is hard to top an Iowan pork tenderloin sandwich.
