But the Xsara is still a fantastic looking car and still would be the best car out there if anyone was still running one - It's got the proper layout and bodyshape.

Well, Petter Solberg ran one last year and was trashed pretty thoroughly. He's doing much better this year in a C4 almost identical to the Citroen team car.

Solberg never had the money to even get close to running one properly. But the fact a four year old car can still be competitve in underfunded privateer hands says exactly how good they are - The C4 is an ugly prick of a car that's only saved because Citroen throws bulk cash and there really only one manufactuer even trying to build something to compete.

So you are saying that if they had continued to develop the Xsara instead of the C4 it would be better? That's more agreeable. I don't really understand why Citroen continues to pour money into WRC. The C4 isn't sporty. Rallying isn't really part of Citroens image. What do they wish to promote and to who? I guess dominating the sport for close to a decade helps though.

Minis racing at last year's Goodwood Revival:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq743jZ6L0Y

It's amazing how an entire field of Minis at full throttle in aggregate sounds like one or two touring cars at part throttle. Plus, they're literally driving three abreast down a straight.

Also, the announcers are seriously getting into it. I wish we had better racing TV in North America.

It's super exciting to see cars the size of a shopping cart running flat out.

And that's what used to be televised to millions in the early 70's. It's great seeing some excellent racing.

Wikipedia says this:

quote:

In his book, "Rapid Response", Dr Steve Olvey, Indycar Medical Director between 1979 and 2003, made the following comments about the incident:

"During an attempt to qualify for the Indy 500, Gordon Smiley, a cocky young driver from Texas, was determined to break 200 mph or die trying. Several veteran drivers...had warned him that he was in way over his head, driving all wrong for the Speedway. Smiley was a road racer and was used to counter-steering his car to avoid a crash if the rear wheels broke traction.

While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. His helmet, due to massive centrifugal force, was literally pulled from his head on impact...I rode to the care center with the body. On the way in I performed a cursory examination and realized that nearly every bone in his body was shattered. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma." (Rapid Response, pp 98-99).
