Not really, 50s and 60s Volvos have always been very fast and competitive against period competition, especially in rallies. They're built by a country that, at the time, had tons of dirt roads that were covered in snow half the year. They just don't have a motorsport pedigree or reputation except to enthusiasts. Thanks for the picture reddeathdrinker, I always love it when Amazons are represented.

My friend's '75 245 threw a rod so I'm making an emergency junkyard run to San Ysidro tomorrow. Pics of the carnage: But it's okay, because here is his 9xx sitting right now: ...except it keeps losing compression after it turns off, likely from bad lifters? Maybe? When it runs it runs fine, but randomly the cylinders will, well, uh, lose compression. (16v + 19T) Now my question... what do the circled connectors do on this LH2.4 wiring harness? (going to be mating to the '94 B230FT From turbobricks... quote:The gray one mates with the engine harness, the white (9-pin) with the interior harness (dash), and the black 6-pin with the fuel injection relay. Can anybody confirm this?

Mid-80's Volvos were also pretty fast - our local Volvo dealer at the time, David Gillanders, won the 1985 Group A Scottish Rally Championship in a 240 Turbo... I remember watching him throw this car up the local hillclimb track in '86. Only pic I could track down is from Autosport in '85

I'm pleasantly pleased with the Slow-vo rep Volvo has. I am invisible to cops and I believe that 35 limits should really be 55 limits. Did an 88 in a 55 in OH coming back from Cedar Point. Got a Warning*. Was doing 50-60 in a 35 along a well banked forest road, saw the cop started to lurch forward then stopped and reversed back into his hiding spot. Was doing 40 in a 20 while late to school. Got a warning. No tickets on my record. *this may have more to to with as I passed him in his hiding spot I immediately pulled over. I was in park before he even flashed his lights. Also: he question my ex if I was always this polite. So, that might not have much to do with Volvo cloaking.

1993 940 8valve/na. Wife's radiator just blew up, literally plastic shattered. Just changed the water pump last week. Is there any kind of pressure release valve anywhere or on the reservoir cap? I'm pretty sure I didn't over fill it after doing the swap or anything, but I couldn't think of why it would just blow up like that. Getting my replacement from FCP tomorrow (I live 20 mins away). Looks like a pretty easy swap.

The cap should have a pressure release built in, I know that there are different colors for different pressures. I think the plastic radiators are known to break like that, so it may just be coincidental that it happened when it did. I don't know if your car has an electric fan or not, but on a 240 there is a plug and gasket that block a hole in the radiator for a temperature sensor on the upper right hand side. If your old radiator has the blocking plug, you'll want to get a new rubber gasket for it. Changing the radiator is pretty easy, you shouldn't have any problems if you can do a water pump.

Is there any way to turn off the service soon light on a '96 volvo 850 without having to take it to the dealership so they can rape me with a $50 because they can fee every 3000 miles since I do oil changes and all applicable maintenance myself?

Service lights are useless for guys like us, if you can't find a shop that will reset it for free, just thread your hand up under there and pull the bulb. That's one thing I miss about the Saab I used to have, you could pull and change bulbs through the dash speaker hole. It was super convenient for that retarded "shift now for fuel economy" light that was basically always illuminated unless I was in 5th gear.

Found on volvoclub.co.uk: quote:Switch the ignition on. As you look at the speedometer on the dash, beneath it opposite the trip reset button is a rubber plug. Remove the plug and with a thin pointer such as a ball point pen, depress the pin. This will reset the service light.

OBD-2 was required starting in 1996 but there was some weirdness during the transitional years (i.e. my brother's 1995 has an OBD-2 socket and the pin diagnostic thing.)

Replaced the battery on my wife's volvo which of course resulted in the radio needing a code. Me being the moron I am tried to unsuccessfully guess the code and locked out the radio. We ended up going to the Volvo dealer and we do have the real code now. In order to reset the radio so I can enter the code, I was told to leave the keys in the Accessory position for at least 2 hours. Does the radio need to be on or off during this time?

I got a new Volvo (the one I was asking about earlier in the thread) Her name's Ellinor and she's a 1987 240DL w/ a 5speed and recently seizing a/c compressor. rest of the set is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jseifert/sets/72157623786217155/ How hard is it to replace the a/c compressor? I replaced the belts to no avail in terms of the squealing it was making and now I believe that's my only recourse... also assorted other questions, what kind of brake pads do the rear emergency brakes take? Where can I get a new trunk lock? and how hard would it be to add cruise control to this beast? rubbersoul fucked around with this message at 22:20 on Apr 29, 2010 |

I have zero knowledge of what dimensions/bolt pattern a wheel needs to fit a 240 (or any car for that matter). Any recommendations on a specific wheel that would fit and where to get it? I'd prefer something that looked more classic than go-fast. Same with tire size, I have no idea on would be a suitable size tire/wheel combo.
