But then a friend told me he saw one for £50. I'll probably just go ahead and lose the deposit and pay for the cheaper one. I really want this thing and I don't quite know why.

Ha! There's one of those sitting in the front window of my shop collecting dust- you mean to tell me someone would actually buy one?

Awesome! Glad to see you finally got a Prestige. The guitar center near me has that exact one for $1700, and it has a nick in it from where you can tell someone dropped it, they wont take off more than 1% for the blemish.

Man, it's such a huge step up from the cab I started with, which is pretty much 2 12" (possibly from a guitar cab) drivers screwed into a plywood box. From the outside it looked like a decent cabinet, but it was certainly homemade. Still, it was $50 and better than a Crate combo.

Roland R-5 drum machine.

Has most of the big brother R-8 sounds, function buttons made out of rubber instead of plastic, bass guitar setups to make up for the missing R-8 sounds - which then again, might be what's available as an add-on card for the R-8.

Something that instantly caught my eye was the chassis, it looks just as worn and ugly like my R8 did, so I'm thinking about a good clean paint job once I figure out a good way to replicate/screen the text. MPC white just for a laugh?

Crosspost from the rear end thread.

Got my new MXR M288 Bass Octave Deluxe the other day and had some time to play around with it. Whole different world from the Micro POG that I've been using for the past 2 years or so. I'll try and give my impressions thus far, but there are still a few aspects of it that need further testing.

Construction: First the boring stuff... Pedal is solidly built, nice and compact, knobs move freely but not too much. My only qualm with MXR pedals is that the power jack is on the side next to the Input. I really really hate that. My Tech 21 VT Bass is the same way and it's really inconvenient to set up my board layout using a centralized power-supply and often having cables that run just too short.

Control: You've got 3 knobs and a mid-boost button on top; very simple. Your 3 controls are Dry (for your unaffected level), Growl, and Girth. Growl and Girth are both 1 octave below your dry sound, but they're EQ'd differently. I'll be getting to how they're different in a moment. The mid-boost button is a tiny, blue led-lit button that gives you a +4db to +14db (trim pot on the circuit board to adjust) boost to the mid frequencies which you can set to either 400hz or 850hz.

Sound: The pedal has that great analog octave sound, similar to a Boss OC-2, but feels like it has a quicker response. And with the two different octave EQs, you can get a pretty wide variety of textures. The Girth settings are very thick, warm and kind of boomy but still with a tad bit of texture. Think dub reggae. Growl has more texture to it, not as thick. Growl when played alone without any dry sound really reminds me almost of a ring-modulator tone. (I'll hopefully be getting a few clips up soon). The mid-boost seems like it will be quite useful, I haven't had a chance to use it in a band setting yet (although I will this weekend). By default its set to 850hz, not sure of the db level, but it's not much, so I'm guessing 4db. I'll probably leave it as is, sounds great.

Tracking and Playability: As with any analog octave or synth pedal, tracking is the big issue. The BOD will track pretty drat good down to a low G, but will start to get a few glitches below that, with the worst being at the low E. I don't really consider that a huge issue since I mainly only use an octave when I'm slightly higher on the neck. The only other issue I've noticed with tracking is that when I'm playing an A on my D string (7th fret), the pedal will track correctly for a second or two then jump as if I'd hit a harmonic. Weird... It might just be an overly resonant spot on my neck, or my strings, who knows. Not a huge issue. And honestly, if you're playing with the dry signal mixed in (which is what the majority of players will do) it's not very noticeable. Playing speed has not been an issue with the tracking, it has been able to keep up with as many notes as I can play. But note that I haven't tried with a pick. Slapping results in a very messy sound, probably because it's tracking the actual attack on the string rather than the note produced.

Overall I really like this pedal, granted it's incredibly different from my Micro POG. So it's going to take some getting used to. I'm going to get some clips up sometime soon hopefully, but I'll be happy to answer any questions about the pedal in the meantime.

Workshopping my kits in my apartment at the moment, here is the left side of my main Yamaha kit:

The flash makes it look like a cluttered mess. The white drums (octobans and snares) I built myself. The 14" floor tom (on the left) also has snares that can be turned on for a old school marching snare sound. Next thing to do is upgrade cymbals.

Here is what I'm building (I have it all, just don't have enough room to set it up in here):

I saw the CHK CHK BOOM a few weeks back on talkbass, and really wanted to try one out but wasn't willing to shell out $50 to $70 USD for what is essentially $20 worth of parts: enclosure, 4 jacks, a momentary DPDT switch, a toggle DPDT switch, 500k log taper potentiometer, knob, and wire. I was going to try building the pedals above anyways, so I decided to make this one too.

Making a feedback loop isn't hard, and adding a "joy button" isn't either, it's just a momentary button in parallel with the stomp. In either mode, the effects loop is always on. The trick, for me, was figuring out how to make the effects loop mute when the feedback stomp wasn't engaged as an option. Figured that out though, hence the switch on the side.

Anyhow, I can post some finished wiring diagrams for all three variants if anyone is curious, it's seriously super easy to make this pedal if you know a little about soldering and how switches work.

Somethings I noticed when testing it out with some effects:

-the EHX stereo memory man's output inverts the signal's phase 180 degrees, so increasing feedback into it actually diminishes the signal volume.
-my Ross phaser also inverts the phase of the signal 180 degrees, turning on the feedback when the phaser is going removes the phaser sound and cuts the volume.
-it works well with my behringer big muff clone
-it works really well with my zoom b2.1u multi effects pedal
-it works terribly lovely with my Dano Cool Cat Chorus, as in it does nothing until the feedback knob is almost maxed, and then puts out an incredibly loud screaming noise that will scare the poo poo out of anyone not expecting it.

I really want to make this pedal, but does anyone know where can I buy a momentary footswitch like the one used here? This is exactly what I want but it's out of stock: http://www.pedalpartsplus.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PPP&Product_Code=9004&Category_Code=SWI
