I'm trying out CS5 right now and Content Aware isn't working as well as I thought. Does anyone have any tricks for it that worked for them? I can't even take out a foul pole against the sky. Chances are I'm doing something wrong though.

First off, I know relatively little about Photoshop but enough to do basic things to improve a photograph (simple lighting effects, masking, burning, dodging, simple layer adjustments, combine multiple exposures). Idiot question: In Lightroom 2, when you use the filmstrip to filter photos, ie bit A What do the three flags actually do? I couldn't find it anywhere in the help so I usually just click wildly until I get what I want. They don't seem to behave in the obvious way (ie one toggle each for flagged, unflagged, and rejected)

Got the Photoshop CS5 trial today and decided to run it through it's paces. Pretty happy with it so far. Predictably it does a lot better with open space then with details, but it saves a lot of time over cloning.   Note: I had to fix some details in the trees and shadows on the house by hand, but overall not too bad. I also did a few quick panoramas and used CAF to fill in some of the missing corners with good success as well. edit: Accidently filled part of the image that didn't need to be and hosed it up completely. I've been playing with the trial this morning. Content aware looks like it'll get rid of the majority of cloning work but it's no magic bullet. I was trying to remove some power lines from an older picture but I was still getting the healing brush blurring at high contrast intersections. I'm more excited by the refine edge option with the lasso tool.

It's a bit time saver, but unsurprisingly you'll still need to bring out the clone brush to clean things up in detail areas. Good job with cleaning up the roofs, but I prefer the less contrasty original. All the detail gets lost in the shadows in the processed version.

Here's my first experiment with content-aware fill. I like this silhouette, but the trees and brush look gross and really detract from the subject. I just want pure sky as his background. So, I make this selection, contouring around the fingers and such with the pen tool  Then, I press MAGIC BUTAN  ...that's not really what I had in mind. HOWEVER. Take a look at it -- it pretty much eliminated all of the brush, and it procedurally generated a lot of good new sky that I can use to clean up the rest of the image. I bring up the selection again, and with a bit of clone tool work...

Arrrgh, every time I save a file from Photoshop the resulting file has the colors screwed up. Everything looks kind of muted and has a sort of yellow-ish cast to it. Is this some sort of color space or profile problem? I've tried Google but I can only find results about saving for web.

Anyone have any good resources for learning more about curves? Every time I sit down to learn the curves tool I poke around blindly without knowing what I'm doing, make the image look like inverted poo poo, get frustrated, close photoshop and decide "meh curves can't be that important".

A few pages back I think someone was replicating the look of some guy's photos by tweaking the curves, that got me realizing that I have no idea what curves are for on any large scale.

If you have Lightroom curves are very easy. Basically you want the curves to be pretty steep without blowing out highlights/blackening out shadow areas. Someone else can probably give much better advice than that though.

My basic question about curves is when/how to use it instead of levels. Usually I try Curves and might get the midtones right but that screws up the shadows, I then set a few more control points and and shortly thereafter stuff looks posterized. That's when I switch to Levels and quit with a "close enough" result.

Try learning to do color correction in Curves, I think that is good practice for figuring out how it works. It takes some finesse, if you are too heavy handed you will posterize everything.

Sigh. I wouldn't even call myself hobbyist photographer, I only have a cheap fuji f60 point and shoot for cryin out loud. But I'm really wanting to print out a 25x30cm print of a photo I took in Poland late last year. The photo itself isnt all that great, but hey, it has meaning to me and I like it  But at the moment it seems like it needs something. I wanted to bring the photo to life a little more, but I have sweet gently caress all photoshop experience, especially in regards to post-processing. I don't retouch my photos at all and very much just wing it and hope for a nice result. So now that I'm actually trying, I just cant get anything to look right in regards to even just the levels, let alone my feeble attempts at trying to make a depth of field type effect. It's frustrating me, I just want a nice print I can display and be somewhat proud of  Judging by a quick look, are my expectations even remotely possible without the end result looking generally fake and garbage? Would someone be willing to lend me a hand if they have some spare time in exchange for  ? Can you link to a larger file so we can play around with a full sized version? It's hard to say what I'd do to improve it without fiddling with a few buttons and knobs.
