For instance, on the album "Tears of Joy" there's a song called "Bulgarian Bulge". It's in 33/16. Basically anything you pick up from Don Ellis will be mathematically challenging and fun to listen to. Anyone listen to that collaboration between Mars Volta and Hella? I have mixed feelings about it. I mean... it sure does sound like Omar and Zach Hill in a studio together.

Yeah, it took me a while to warm up to it, but it was pretty good. The drums were a little low in the mix and I thought the synth bass was too muddy sounding, but it's an interesting album. I would definitely listen to a new El Grupo Nuevo album (they supposedly recorded 3 albums, but only released the one so far).

The new Bygones EP is really not as mathy as one would expect. Two of the most technical players in the genre went for a hardcore punk (I guess?) kind of sound. It was pretty fascinating, but I didn't really like the vocals/shouting.

How about some instrumental math rock? Maybe not the techiest bands you've ever heard, but i think it can be nice to catch a break from the constant screaming in this genre. -Shelter Red http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOMBa5vQ5cI Some good friends who don't get enough credit for the well written music they make. -Lite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4KN7QRVfUw&feature=SeriesPlayList&p=A4A3A217A3788F15 From Japan, recently saw these guys live and they absolutely blew me away. Who knew instrumental math rock could be cool with almost no distortion?

I'm not sure if this sorta secret "supergroup" ORBS(members from Between the Buried and Me, Fear Before, Abigail Williams, Nightbear) would fall under this but they have a really spacey yet complex abstract psychedelic pop sound going on. http://www.myspace.com/orbsband All the songs are cool but Kid Cancer is my favorite!

I feel like I've ripped a whole through this genre's 90s output; just gave a listen to June of 44's two "highly regarded" albums and neither did it for me. Might as well plug something a bit out of the way: U.S. Maple. Not exactly cookie-cutter time-signature, experimenting pioneers or anything (wouldn't label them solely as a Math Rock band either); certainly do fiddle with typical four-to-the-floor though and have got a place in your heart if your taste floats to the Don Cab section of "Math Rock".

i've seen some great bands posted, I have lots but let's see some international math rock: good idea/bad idea (spain, mathy post hardcore-ish) lobster (portugal, power duo) billy chocolat (france, insane) nuito (japan, awesome, totally unlike te or toe) LITE (also japan) and these dudes from oak forest, freudian slip, sign me up for 5/4 and 7/4, please! America: Rumah Sakit; SWIMS; Them, Roaring Twenties; HEY!TONAL; By the end of tonight; auto!automatic!!; Sleeping People; dakota/dakota; ahleuchatistas holy cow there are more, but this is the only music I really listen to these days. It's probably why I'm so crazy. HEY!TONAL is cool because: quote:HEY!TONAL is an experimental band comprising of Kevin Shea (Storm & Stress, Get The People, Talibam!, Coptic Light, People…), Mitch Cheney (Rumah Sakit, Sweep The Leg Johnny, Species Being, Greenness…), Dave Davison (Maps & Atlases), Alan Mills (Chii-saioto) and Theo Katsaounis (Weather, Locks, Joan of Arc, ZZZZ’s…). The sound of this ensemble combines in unconventional fashion to whip up a batch of deliciously accomplished mathy jazz-rock snacks. The results share common ground with both HEALTH and Don Caballero, via a novel route. edit: i thought i checked well enough, i posted a couple repeats Ambuletz fucked around with this message at 01:00 on May 5, 2010 |

Oh No Pigeons! posted:Yo whudup. Hm, don't really know what to think. I was starting to dig The Skin Surf/Frozen Zoo because they're catchy and I thought they were somewhat ironic songs and the rest of the album wouldn't sound like them. If they're going to have lots of singing I'd prefer more subtlety like in Melody 7 and Last Smile for Jaron. I probably wouldn't have gotten into them if I had heard this stuff first instead of stuff like 40 Rods to the Hogshead. Needs less vocal-centric material and more genre-defying genius and some spastic mathy goodness. But it definitely doesn't sound terrible, I still can't wait to get it and give it a proper listen.

Everything I hear from Patagonian Rats makes me less excited for it. The whole sound of the album is so much flatter and less interesting than anything else they've done. I dunno, the older stuff is all so energetic and creative and wonderful and I'm just not sensing any of that on the samples that we've gotten so far. I hope I'm wrong.

I know it isn't math rock at all but I found a very good video of Wavves with Zach Hill on drums. (hella drummer for those who don't know) and I figured a lot of you would enjoy it a lot. http://www.baeblemusic.com/concertvideo/The-Market-Hotel/Wavves.html Enjoy it. He goes crazy on this simple music. That site also has a very good full concert video of Dosh. After watching it, I was sad that I didn't go see him perform a few months ago but I figured a one man band can't really be all that great to watch. Boy was I wrong.

I'm not crazy about the new album now that I've heard it, but I guess it might grow on me. On the plus side, I am still super excited to see Tera Melos (with Anamanaguchi!) in Brooklyn next month. Anybody else in the east coast should definitely try to make it to one of the shows they're playing because they usually like to ignore us so that they can go tour japan ten times in a row instead.

I personally think Patagonian Rats is loving awesome but then again I love everything Tera Melos has ever released. I actually really enjoy Nick's vocals and I don't think they've lost their mathy-edge. You could hear the evolution of Nick's vocals in Complex and Idioms and I think it suits the group really well. Of course I loving loved the earlier albums and despite it being a little soon to say I really, really like Rats just as much as their older stuff. One of the main reasons why I like Tera Melos is because they are always willing to change and adapt their sound. Honestly poo poo would be way boring if they released nothing but Drugs to the Dear Youth-style albums. I think it's loving rad that they keep updating their sound and Rats is a good example of that. Oh yeah if you haven't seen Tera Melos live...see them live. They're (usually) a grade-A live act and they're right about to go on a huge loving tour. Can't wait to see em in Sac.

Can't wait to see em in Sac. I saw them in Sac last night as well and I concur with this recommendation. If you have the chance to see them during this tour, go for it. The venue was small but it was a pretty good show, I had fun. They played with So Stressed, Carson McWirter and Religious Girls. It was a pretty diverse show. So Stressed reminded me of Health, Carson's acoustic set was so incredible and Religious Girls was much better than I thought they would be (I wasn't expecting such a crazy awesome tribal sound). Tera Melos played I think almost all of Patagonian Rats, plus a couple other songs like When Worms Learn to Fly. I was a little bummed they didn't play more old stuff, since they have the extra dude now, but I suppose since it was kind of the album release show so they had to expose people to the newest stuff. They definitely brought the Tera Melos energy though. I was right in the front, as to ensure complete eardrum obliteration and it was good stuff.
