Good to see that everything is back to normal.
Skand -- many thanks for picking up the bill for dinner; it was unexpected and appreciated. Next time is on me.

Was great to meet both you and SWATJester. We'll definitely have to do this again some time (with even more goon FS-aspirants and FSers).

Was nice meeting you and SWATJester, and thanks for answering my questions. (SWATJester, if you go to the other goon meet give my regards) Will definitely have to do it again sometime!

I just found out that two guys I served with in the army are in DC with DSS. Someone told me they do like high-level escorts or some such. Anyone have any clue about how I could link up with them?

FACEBOOK!?!?

Maybe their .gov email addresses? I don't really know what to tell you unless you have a phone number or something...

Let's say, theoretically, that I very recently decided that I would like to pursue becoming an FSO, and today filled out the online registration. With invites to June's test just going out, do I have pretty much a snowball's chance in hell of sitting for the exam this time around?

I would think so. The written exams are normally done is large auditoriums or testing halls. The marginal cost of an extra exam-taker is low, especially compared to the marginal cost of an oral examinee

That was the good old days. Now it's all done on computer and is extremely casual. It is definitely worth trying to sign up, but be thorough and don't rush through the application; what you write will be referenced at literally every step of the process.

Think long and hard about what cone you are applying for. It is kind of bizarre that this is one of the first things they ask you to do considering how important the choice is. Don't rush your application!

My biggest regret is that I didn't do as much research as I should have into the application process. I applied on a whim and my application was finished in 20-30 minutes. I thought the application was only relevant to getting accepted to take the test but as has been said it's not and it worries me more and more the closer we get to learning the QEP results. As a result, I've been working on my Peace Corps Application for about a month.

Take your time.

Not only is it referenced in the QEP, but the examiners in the 2 on 1 interview section of the Oral Exam will have a copy of your application. In fact, it is the only thing they will know about you when the interview starts; my examiners, at least, did not have copies of my QEP responses.

I just confirmed my registration for the Seoul testing center on June 12. Though I've only been studying for about three months, I've been reading for three or four hours every day. I've memorized the Constitutional Amendments and am working my way through some of the documents provided in the Yahoo Group. i'm excited for the exam, but at the same time I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much.

Looking through the Biographical Section, I'm a little concerned. I know that the Yahoo Group says not to be "modest" in your answers. Will we be asked to defend our responses during the Oral Assessment, or will they do some sort of verification? Obviously, I'm not going to lie, but I want to know how well I should be able to defend my responses.

It's called tandem... It can be done, but you often hear of people being separated for a tour at a time. Basically, you can't have a spouse be in a position of authority. So, don't be in the same cone. Like my previous IMO had to go to South Africa, because that was closest he could get to Central Africa where his spouse was directed.

Consular chief and Pol chief? A-ok
Econ Off and PD Chief? A-ok
IMer and RSO? A-ok

Management Officer and GSO spouse? No-go.

If it's approved ;)

In any case, for other people not yet in the Dept., after your initial 2 tours, you have to bid and lobby for your positions. Now, if you're spouse and you are lobbying for the same Posts, it makes it that much more difficult to land assignments*

*I mean, unless you want to spend 20 years in hardship posts.

So I finally got around to requesting the score breakdown for my FSOT test, and while I did pretty well on the multiple choice section, apparently my essay was poo poo. Not really sure how I can practice for that sort of thing, but I'll give it another try next year anyway.

What are the chances of being killed in Iraq?

GreySkies

I got my invitation for the June test, and while I'm excited, I don't expect to get in for a variety of reasons. I thought really hard about applying for consular to give me a better chance to get in, but I don't think I'd be happy as a career consular, so I went with political. I also graduate with a bachelor's in December, and I'm only a 2 in German, so I'm mostly taking this for practice.

Good luck to everyone else taking it in June, and congrats to SWATJester for actually making it in!

What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step. It is always the same step, but you have to take it.
I applied for the 02/01/10 ITMS posting months ago and the status has been at "Referred to Hiring Official" since March.

Is it pretty standard for the process to take this long with no updates?
