Check out Quiet Village, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jean Michel Jarre, Harmonia, Ozric Tentacles, Mike Oldfield, Mercury Rev, Philip Glass, Henry Cow and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Other bands I can think of that have a lot of songs like what you've described but also have vocal and/or more uptempo rockin stuff are Procol Harum, Marillion, Porcupine Tree and Tortoise. Also you mentioned that you don't like electronic, but if you change your mind, give Royksopp, Wagon Christ, Atom Heart, The Cinematic Orchestra, Cornelius and Tangerine Dream a try.

Wow man, everything's great so far, thanks.

and after listening to a bit more of their music realize I may have been listening to the wrong type of music my whole life. I really, really enjoy the base beat in Coastal Brake and for some reason that song is just drat motivating. I get more lab work done listening to that song than I ever have.

I am looking for more electronic music that is upbeat and inspiratinal like this song. I don't know a thing about electronic music and Itunes only helped me pilfer a few more songs and to be honest they don't much cut it. Any recommendations would be great.

I am always looking for more sexy, mysterious-sounding, female-fronted trip-hoppy bands like Portishead, Lovage, and Bitter:Sweet. I'm familiar with all the usual suspects, but would I like Shivaree? I absolutely love their song "Goodnight Moon" (from the closing credits of Kill Bill Volume 2) -- it really fits into the same kind of sound I like. What do people say about them, generally?

I ask because I've been disappointed a few times recently after hearing amazing-sounding songs I love and then buying CDs that are disappointing: Koop and Psapp come to mind.

I've been looking for a really specific type of music and maybe you guys can help. I love the hell out of singers with a pretty drat high, sorta wobbly range, and I've been digging on sorta caffeinated/giddy weird rock. Pandora's been very little help finding stuff like this.

Basically, stuff similar to:
Born Ruffians - "Barnacle Goose"
The Widow Babies - "Harp of 1000 Strings"
No Kids - "I Love The Weekend"
Abe Vigoda - "The Garden"
We All Have Hooks for Hands - "Made Up of Tiny Lights"

I know these are pretty vastly different examples but hopefully you can see the similar strain I'm getting at, I'm definitely open to stuff similar to anything here.

I'm looking for recommendations on older 60s/70s boy/girl pop bands similar to what Codeine Velvet Club paid tribute to with their song Hollywood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnSILYfzl54

The part around 1:26 in to the video is the sound I'm looking for and last.fm just recommends things like The Fratellis which lack the boy/girl dynamic.

The Mae Shi - HLLLYH is right up your alley. They're from the same scene as Abe Vigoda ("The Smell") and they're loving awesome. Make sure to get that album in particular, their earlier stuff is really loving weird and, while good, doesn't really match what you're looking for like HLLLYH does.

I've gotten a recent hard on for rock bands with a lightish tone, stuff like Circa Survive, Dead Letter Circus, Secret and Whisper, Dredg,... I've looked around myself for stuff like it but it has a tendency to either get too soft and pathetic or pop-like. I'd appreciate any and all shots at something along these lines though. Thanks in advance.

I digress, but I wonder why people always recommend Disintegration Loops when you could mention Melancholia, Shortwave Music, Variations in Chrome Primitive or anything else from his discography full of beautiful works? The Loops are certainly nice but they are not the definite high point of Basinski's work.

I like the concept and the sound of Disintegration Loops but they are a bit overplayed (pun intended)

Hi,

I used to be a huge music junkie, but for whatever reason I have not tried listened to almost anything new in the past five years. I am mostly looking for new bands or albums that have come out since then, since I was holding pretty well in the types of music I liked at the time, but if you think there is a band I may have missed, you could recommend that as well.

I used to like harder, angry type rock - Nirvana and Tool were my favorite bands - but I find it very difficult to listen to those types of bands anymore. I really like Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Kyuss, The Strokes, Matisyahu, Radiohead, The Mars Volta...there are probably a few others, but those stand out. My favorites are probably The Smiths and Interpol.

Any recommendations?
