Try industrial parks, or places that rent out workshops/work space, and look towards the edge of town. Like I said before, we got a big double-garage sized place for $250/mo within 15 minutes of downtown Tampa (via the interstate that ran near it, heh). Not climate controlled IIRC but you can bring fans if there's electrical hookups.

Has the old project thread gone? Im starting what I think will be my first big project next week and was thinking would anyone be interested in a thread about how its progressing? My and my friends all grew up on a really rough council estate in liverpool, and its based around the friends that never really moved on and the monotony of there lives, which just revolves around drink and drugs. It's a really big issue in the UK right now, the young, unemployed estate youth that spend all there welfare on vodka and cocaine, its something I really care about so I think it would be a great first photographic project.

You know what's intimidating? Being an amateur and shooting two professional photographers. As with many places, I take pictures at work because I have the fanciest camera and have some idea of what I'm doing, so the art gallery committee asked me to do a 360 panorama shot of our art gallery. Turned out the guys whose work was being shown were there today so the art gallery people asked me to get some promo shots of them with their art. At least it was really informal and I didn't feel too pressured, but I just got my B400 yesterday and was getting used to it and was a bit nervous since I had to keep making adjustments and was taking a while. One of the guys gave me a few pointers for lighting and they both ended up liking the shots I got of them, so it was all good.

I love it when (sometimes) everything comes together - including the 'right place at the right time' aspect of it. You can invest time and money into what you do on an ongoing basis, but there's always some stuff you can't buy. Really, that's excellent.

Best quote from the vid - "I'm inside their soul and I'm pulling things out of them" Yeah... I do think it hilarious that he looks like a mid-level office manager rather than a photographer.

That video sucks mostly because it doesn't really convey anything meaningful, let alone any substantive information/education. It's just a mini EPK. Bollocks

I wanted to seem more of his lighting set-up dammit! I couldn't tell what he was using, Broncolor heads I think, but it looked like they were bare and pointed right at the model. Also, when I grow up, I want to be like Fadil and touch all the models while sensually pulling things out of them.

I haven't heard of Fadil before.. from the sound of him I assume he is a pretty well known veteran? Do lots of famous pros all touch the models? That's always been a big no-no for me so yeah, I'm a little shocked to see him doing that. He fluffed that one girls hair and it didn't change jack poo poo. Why couldn't she fluff it? Creepy.

I've never heard of him either, and I've always made a habit of not touching the models. I'm pretty sure the industry standard is not touching the models. Especially not stroking their legs.

Especially not stroking their legs. Eh, I used to be 100% against touching, but like most things it's flexible. You tell them what's wrong and show how it can be fixed. If they can't do it on their own after you tell them, you get a stylist to do it if one is available. If not you ask if you can do it yourself, and don't make a big deal about it. I've never been told "no", I can't pick a fuzzy of someone's dress. Or whatever. Don't ASSUME you can just touch them and you'll be fine. After you've worked with someone a few times even that goes out the window. I've had model friends ask me to help them get out of undergarments. It's all a matter of your actions being appropriate for the relationship you have with the model.

I think we'll steer this away from who's touching whom, and onto a little Flickr shenanigans. http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrerabelo/70458366 A guy posts a classic Cartier-Bresson shot in a critique forum, and the overwhelming response is to trash it because it's not sharp.
