They are DEFINITELY different cliques, there's the crowd that likes the dark growling dnb while there's the liquid puritans who demand the deepest cuts with the oldest soul samples. I guess my point is that the genres are blurring and you can't really peg an artist with one subgenre. S.P.Y. is a great example. He's done some soulful stuff with Marky, but his ASBO EP was dark as hell.

Okay, I updated the OP a little to add in some quotes from Auspex's wonderful megapost (as well as a link straight to the post), and I changed around some of my examples too. Also, zeldadude posted:oh my god netsky - secret agent is the best song I've heard this year. Hits the spot reallll good. Oh man. Thanks so much for this! I hadn't heard anything of Netsky's so far, but I looked up some tracks on YouTube including Secret Agent. Definitely some of the best new DNB stuff I've heard so far this year Count me in for another "can't wait for Netsky's upcoming first album" vote.

I think it'd be cool to see how many goons are in each "clique". I'm a liquid guy so I haven't even heard anything by a lot of the big harder dnb producers. I still like some harder stuff, just prefer my sweet sweet liquid... mmmmmm... And its my pleasure to introduce more people to Netsky Everyone buy the album when it releases! I reaaaallyy wish I lived in the UK sometimes when I see those "every weekend" lineups. Holy poo poo. A,sl, does anyone know what Logistics is up to lately? Just DJing or is he working on a new album? I didn't really like Crash Bang Wallop, tho eastern promise is huge. Edit: I know there's a pretty big crossover in fanbases for dubstep and dnb, so if any of you dudes like dubstep I highly recommend Nero - Innocence. Big fuckin track! zeldadude fucked around with this message at 12:42 on May 27, 2010 |

Really though its completely well defined there's nothing to argue about, you need subgenres because everyone has their favoured styles. An artist doesn't always have to make only one style to be considered a recommendation, as you say recommending S.P.Y for liquid. I don't think its much to get worked up about, events are commonly one subgenre, labels too etc. That big write-up misses obvious important poo poo like Goldie - Timeless. Can't just ignore what got dnb to where it is today... labels like Moving Shadow, Good Looking. Actually now i see moving shadow mentioned but i don't get why its there.

The tunes spun there were a bit too repetitive for my tastes, and there was barely anyone in attendance the times I went, so I stopped going after a couple times. I assume you're talking about the Bassbin Safari weekly at the Dragon's Den. If so, shame on you for not coming out more often! I just got back from it a few hours ago, and the sets tonight were killer. If you dislike the "repetitive"(aka Aggro) Djs, just take a smoke break for a half-hour or so and a proper ragga jungle Dj will take over soon after. Also, never miss a Dj Proppabear set if you can help it, he plays some of the dirtiest ragga jungle I've ever heard in my life. Click here for the full 482x720 image.

Mexican Samurai posted:Man, this is really relaxing. Does anyone know of any other kind of chill Drum N Bass? There's tons by lots of different producers, so there's not necessarily a "chill-n-bass" style. Here's a few examples... The Upbeats feat. Jess Chambers - Through the Night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhphZTi1Qvk Normally you think of fast paced, aggressive, darkish dnb when you see The Upbeats associated with something. The whole Big Skeleton album is a nice mix of dancefloor tunes and unexpected bits. London Elektricity - Just One Second (Apex Remix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGNDlLiVBK0&feature=related We don't even need to discuss how great LE or Apex are, so you know the remix is great. Alix Perez & Sabre - Solitary Native http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfFsQFuTbxU&feature=related This song. I love this loving tune. The flipside "Old Flame" is good poo poo too. EDIT: I came to add Bop to that list, but I feel like enough people would argue me down that Bop isn't even drum and bass. To that, I say I don't really care, I feel like Bop has and is having an interesting influence on dnb that it hasn't really had before. So here you go... Bop - Tears Of A Lonely Metaphysician http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6IRqCA1nfM&feature=related There was a Bop remix EP recently released on Med School. http://www.iambop.com/releases/medic19/ I could post a bunch of other stuff but I'm not sure if it fits in what you consider "chill drum and bass", I assume that's different for everyone. Also is it safe to assume not a lot of people are into drumfunk? As for what I'm into, kinda like Manoli but I fluctuate a lot. I used to be really into breakcore and darkstep while bordering on liquid. Now I'm more about liquid and whatever else I think sounds good or fun, nothing cheezy though. I love me a good ragga tune every now and then, even the ones that turn into crazy drill poo poo. I haven't been out to a dnb event in over a year now and I hate it. Everything is focused on dubstep down here, even the ATL cats that were nothing but dnb and jungle rarely have a dnb guy down. Nashville never really had a cohesive enough scene to keep events going for more than a short while so everything there is random as hell. If I sound a bit bitter I'm not, okay well maybe I am, but I do like UK Funky stuff and a bit of Wonky dubsteps as well as a host of other types of music both clubbish and not. I love that London Elektricity track too. D.Kay is pretty chill too. I think I've already mentioned him in here, but in case I haven't, he's got kind of a jazz fusion/DNB crossover thing going on for the most part: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI0q8KKHlus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-DPtRp8Dec He's only got one album out that I know of (Individual Soul), but it's real solid and you should definitely check it out if you're looking for chiller DNB.

Hey folks. I've got a recently-finished song here, and I'm not really sure which genre/subgenre would classify it. I figured this thread would probably be a good place to ask. I've just thought of it as some sort of melodic, atmospheric dnb, but from skimming through this thread, for all I know even that vague descriptor might be at odds with what more experienced drum and bass listeners would call it. I don't really keep up with the specifics, and I generally suck at describing my own music anyway! If anybody'd be interested in helping classify it, whether it be genre/subgenre or general descriptions you think would be fitting, the song's called "Zwei" and is on the youtubes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BScGkoKnInM&fmt=18 Hopefully it's not out of line for me to post this here. Thanks!

He's gone downhill since High Society (TGDD did have a couple good tracks, but the release was "meh" to me). Not saying I don't play his tracks out, they're just not as creative as they used to be. With the way hospital-style dnb is moving, I feel like HC might make everyone take a collective step backward because guys like Netsky are bringing a completely new sound to the table and HC may have hit a creative brick wall. example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=203FfH4ODPM vs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXiiq0dvMu4 I know I'm probably in the minority, but TGDD just had an extra layer of cheese that didn't click with me.
