Brother's XR500 that he got working for minimum cost. Makes a great noise and you can do standing wheelies. By accident if you are new to the bike. https://wi.somethingawful.com/91/91e9c0d3194408768544d86037157d0c68dca96b.jpg Somebody fucked around with this message at 09:19 on May 27, 2010 |

I just rode my new-to-me BMW R100GS Paris Dakar ~6200 miles in three weeks from Salt Lake City to Kodiak Alaska. In two years of ownership of my F650 I have only put ~2000 miles on it so I think it'll be sold and the proceeds will go to upgrades for the Paris Dakar. I've already got happy trails panniers and a Motorrad Elektric 450 watt charging system and new starter picked out. I think this winter I'll send the transmission out to be rebuilt and get the wheels restored by Woodys Wheels. I bent the front rim on a dirt road in Montana a week into my trip and beat it back into shape with big rocks. The final drive will need rebuilding soon but I'm confident it'll last until the end of riding season and I already have the parts to rebuild it. The carbs could probably use attention too and new cables are a given. I fell in love with this bike and I think everyone who buys an old bike should ride it home so they can get a feel for it. I doubt I'll ever let this one go. When I finish my advrider ride report I'll start on one for CA as well.

I posted about my restoration project in AI one or two years ago and got a lot done back then, but you know how life goes, it somehow ended up in the back of the garage again as it had a lot of times in the years since I first disassembled it. Now it's done. Next week I'm getting the registration and I can finally ride it again. Click here for the full 800x600 image. It's an MZ TS 250/1 made in 1976 in the now non-existant German Democratic Republic. Twostroke porn! After getting it back on the street I still have some additions to make, I need a big tank (there's a 22l version they put on the "Trophy Sport" edition which I need to get a hold of) and something to put my tent and luggage on. Then off I go, to circumnavigate Germany by riding along or close to the border. That's about 2200 km in 2 weeks and it's gonna be wicked fun.

Jesus titty-loving christ, a MZ. One of my gf uncles has one sitting on a basement for over 10 years and he simply refuses to sell it to me. Its even the brasilian version with a front brake disc and beautiful oh-so beautiful plastics and tank. I can`t find one selling anywhere in the country, they`re that loving rare and this one is just sitting there rotting... Do you have a link for the old thread or maybe some other site on what you`ve done to this babe ?

I paid the same amount for my GSPD as I did for my Funduro, combined they still cost less than half of what a new GS cost.

Picked up a 2005 EX500 with ~6,500 on the clock for $1,000. It was down once, but everything broken was replaced, the only thing left to do is bolt on the bottom fairing and repaint the front fender when I feel like it. I feel like I got a smashing deal, is that the general consensus here? Click here for the full 1600x1200 image.

In Germany there's tons of MZ on ebay from 300 Euros upwards, varying in condition from scrap to perfectly restored running condition (Or even perfect original runinng condition. These bikes are loving troopers) I assume you are in Brasil? If you desperately want one I guess you could try to buy one in Europe and manage shipping it over somehow. But I don't really know how much shipping such a big thing would cost and what the customs problems would be. The best bet would be to suck up to your gf's uncle a lot and rescue that bike from rotting. I could help with shipping over spare parts. Regarding my original thread, I don't have archives or search, so I can't say where it is. I will try to find some of the old pictures and make a new thread. Sadly I ran into a little problem, I have to wait for a new back tire to arrive before I can get it on the road. Right now there's an old sidecar tire on it and I decided it needed to be changed. You don't want to corner on one of those, they have a flat profile which falls off sharply towards the edge. When cornering, a long time before that monstrous exhaust comes even close to the tarmac, you're gone. Edit: Actually, I would be very happy if someone with archives could look up my old thread and send me the links to the pictures in there, since those will most likely be on my old crashed harddrive. I posted it in AI with the project tag and I think the title had "East-German" something something in it, if that helps. Frost fucked around with this message at 11:06 on Jun 1, 2010 |

Frost posted:Lots of interesting stuff I wish... We're not allowed to import used vehicles here unless they have 30 years or more, but i'd love to get one of these fuckers. And to be honest, if i was going the "import some old rare bike" i'd just buy a moto guzzi or something like that and spend the next 5 years trying to (unsuccessfuly) make it run. I think i'll stick to buying an old rd 135 and cafe-racering it, way less hassle but not nearly as amazing as these things. Having a MZ as a second bike is perfect, you just don't have to worry about anything with it and it looks like nothing else on the road. The one i'm in love looks like this, minus the "being new" thing: Click here for the full 1160x779 image. It's ugly as all hell but at the same time so beautiful...

Happy birthday to me! And thus, after 6 months of not riding a motorcycle, jonesin' like a crackhead in rehab, and a brief 2 week stint on a Honda ST1300, I make my triumphant (lols) return to the moto world. Just in time for the riding season, too. Found this gorgeous machine on Craigslist back in April and spent over a month negotiating with the dude until he finally broke and let it go for 6k. The bike only has 13,000 miles and is in immaculate condition. Never dropped, not a scratch, and properly maintained. Apologies for the crappy cell phone pictures.
