Are there many Canadian lawyers here? It's odd reading all the doom and gloom from the Americans in this thread, things don't seem so bad here. Then again I guess we don't have a law school for every 2 or 3 people in the country

There are a ton of states with three days exams - Texas is a big one, but a lot of the south does like South Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama. Washington has a three day exam because there's a day of professional responsibility and no MMPRE. And there are other states too... Delaware, Ohio and probably more. Montana manages to have a three day bar and no reciprocity just like California.

It's going to the desk at the local court and having them certify that you don't have a massive criminal record, or a ton of unpaid parking tickets. If you are going to apply, PM me or give me an email address. Right now there's only prosecution jobs available in GovGuam, and I can get your info to the right person far more quickly.

I graduated today and am legitimately worried this will be the highest point of my life. Talked to a classmate of mine who narrowly beat me for a paid internship-possibly-leading-to-job with a government agency. He's considering leaving it to try for private practice. I wanted to shake him and tell him he was crazy...but I said "cool, good luck, let me know what you decide, I might be interested." Who knows, maybe I'll luck out!

Also, I was reading up on U.S. Territories today, and I learned that the Northern Mariana Islands a) has a 100% bar passage rate, and b) is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most equitable climate on the planet. Therefore, their bar exam is easy and their climate is breezy. And they're right next to Guam, so you can hang out with all the cool kids who have jobs on the big island.

Trick to passing the CNMI bar exam: take it when some local kids are taking it, they'll pass everyone just to make sure the local kid makes it. The time I took it? 6 for 6. However, the CNMI is currently turning into a 3rd world country, and is probably not the most hospitable place to be practicing. See, e.g., https://www.saipansucks.com - not updated since 2006, but just use your imagination to project what would happen to such a place once the garment industry dissolves and they've chased away all the tourism/military $$. On the other hand, there are job opportunities there.

So, hypothetical. A judge dislikes us and dislikes our case. Said case involves a matter of pure law to be decided- a contractual interpretation. But it's not a contractual interpretation between the two parties at hand- it's between our client and another party. Would it really piss the judge off if I filed a dec action against that other party in another venue and tried to use that judgment via collateral estoppel?

Hey abugadu, how does the job market in Guam look for non-lawyers? Say in some basic office work, or maybe a teaching position? Guam's looking pretty good lately. Hopefully my husband passes the CA bar this time.

More bar exam chat: How much preparing do you really need to do for the MPT? I'm taking New York, so we have one and it is worth 10% of your score. Barbri has assigned us like four practice MPTs so far, and I think I get the general gist of the thing by now.

Pretty good, they're always hiring teachers, although you want to get into the private school market if you can, because the administration for the public schools will make you want to pull your own head off. And there's always places looking for office work as well. Double bonus points if you can speak Japanese/Korean/Chinese.

If you've done 4 practice ones, you should be set.

ManiacClown posted:How are the pay and living conditions there? I need something and maybe, just maybe, this could be my ticket. The sticking points would be my wife and 4-year-old. Gov. pay for attorneys starts at 40k/year, private is starting 50-60k/year, but you'd have to pass the local bar first for that. Gov. attorneys get 5 years of temporary admission if they've passed the bar elsewhere. Living conditions are fine, though wives/kids tend to not like it here unless your wife likes the outdoors and you can afford a private school for your kid. The government jobs have filled up quite rapidly over the last year, there's only a couple spots left in the prosecution office, since all the people who would traditionally come here and work for a year or two before leaving are all sticking around due to the job market in the states.

I'd probably want to get my SCUBA license but I've been wanting to do that anyway, don't care if I'm a borderline fatty. No kids so don't give a rat's rear end as far as that. I'd care about job conditions if I began teaching. Unfortunately no Korean/Chinese/Japanese. Gonna send my husband to the Guam saltmines if the LA County hiring freeze doesn't lift soon it won't

I took the LSAT today in Atlanta. I thought I did well except for the fact that I ran out of time on the last 4-5 logic game questions. gently caress me for not studying those enough to get fast at them. Also the whole production seemed hilariously disorganized. They held it at a hotel and it seemed like they used hotel staff to do a lot of the work. That would have been alright except it appeared like the staff couldn't read, and they were painfully slow getting anything done in a room full of a couple hundred test takers. What should have lasted 3 hours took nearly 6.
