The whole thing is just so cute and bubbly and harmless that I can't hate it, and instead I boomerang my burning anger back on to Muira.

I came into this considering idolmaster to be nothing but yet another bizarre japanese anomaly, possibly with a somewhat amused slant by being tangentially related to the whole vocaloid po pi po crazyness. This video made me realize that it is nothing like that and is in fact bona fide poo poo. Where there was no hate in my heart against Idolmaster, there now is.

Honestly, we have no idea how much he actually plays the dumb games. He made a comment about it once or twice (and usually in an area where authors make jokes), but that's it. For all we know, he just spends all this time working on the art for the chapters (which is possible, and actually more likely because if you remember, the biggest waits were when he was drawing "thousands of soldiers with own individually drawn and customized helmets").

He's probably an introvert, sure, but we don't know exactly how much so; it's all speculation and people treating speculation as THE BONAFIDE TRUTH NO DOUBT EVER.

If he does I wish they'd release the volumes in larger sizes. I've always disliked the small size of manga books, but it's especially galling in the case of high quality art manga like Berserk.

As to what causes delays I'd say he's probably in a bit of a writers flunk like George R. R. Martin as well as anything else. Long haul writing project like Berserk has probably burned him out a bit over the years on where to go, how to go about it and just his passion for the project. Especially when he knows he can't exactly up and quit due to fan pressure, contracts etc.

I have about 18 volumes of the Dark Horse release and they are a pain to read because they are so tiny. What I love doing though, is plugging into my TV with a monitor cable and blowing up the scans to about 20-30 inches in height. Berserk looks FANTASTIC that way, and seeing the art that big lets you see the absolutely incredibly amount of detail and my dream is having enormous coffee table book size translations of the entire series. My son will hand me the hot off the presses gigantic leatherbound book of the just completed epilogue on my death bed, and I will read it and die a happy man.

At the very least when Dark Horse rereleases it, can we get it big like those DBZ and Vagabond compilations I see at B&N?

Each day in-game you have to create a schedule for your jailbait idol. Stuff like going to auditions, singing lessons, etc. which usually take the form of a mini game. That will increase/decrease her various stats. Then, from time to time, you pick a song, buy her some crap and make her dress in the most idiotic way to perform in a stage. Rinse, repeat until your time limit is over.

Not to derail or anything but while we wait (hurr) can anyone recommend an manga/anime that is similar in style to Berserk that would be just as good? I've read Claymore and I'm up to date on that, Record of Lodoss War is originally how I got into Berserk so anything along these lines.

Vinland Saga is a fantastic story about vikings with an art quality on par with Berserk. While it's a only a monthly release, it's been consistent thus far.

Hellsing is another good one if you don't mind some extra cheesiness.

*False Edit* How the Christ did I almost forget about Battle Angel Alita. Another series with fantastic art and a sci-fi slant.

In addition to Vinland Saga, watch Gungrave, read Shin Angyo Onshi, Vagabond, Blade of the Immortal. Maybe Guin Saga?

Also Hunter X Hunter just went on hiatus again so at least we have another series to share in the Berserk fan's misery.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

Blade of the Immortal is definitely one of my favorites, though I wasn't able to keep up with it after a while.

I'd have to look for it to remember the name, but this forum introduced me to a series that reminded me of Berserk in some of its tone and approach to violence: It stars a high school kid with a demonic mask that resurrects him the next day every time he dies, which is good because he fights yakuza and other criminal outfits and routinely gets butchered or cut down for his trouble. A little like Blade of the Immortal in that the main character can't die, so it becomes as much about wondering how much of his supporting cast he can keep alive.

Also Ichi the Killer is disturbing as gently caress but also an exciting and visceral read.

edit: Found the series I couldn't name: It's called Akumetsu, and it's finished if you like to have a read that goes from start to finish. I haven't finished it myself but I might just devote myself to that in the future.

Berserk's prototype predates Monster by about 6 years though? Maybe you are thinking of Guin Saga? I know Muira loves that series.

If you guys want to have fun seeing something that really influenced Berserk check out Paul Verhoeven's Flesh+Blood (acknowledged by Muira as an inspiration). It follows a bunch of mercenaries getting betrayed in Renaissance Italy, then getting revenge. It stars Rutger Hauer and if the design of Gambino isn't based on him, then I'll eat my hat.

^^^ BotI was pretty good, but I'm still looking for motivation to finish reading the series. It's about an immortal ronin who must kill 1000 evil men or some such thing, it's out on Dark Horse just like Berserk. EDIT: I just remembered, he's not literally immortal, but if you remember that episode of Futurama where Fry gets those worms in him that tone up his body and make him heal super fast? It's just like that. It's so close it has to be a reference of some kind.

Really detailed drawings of sci-fi horror / ultraviolence with sporadic chapter releases? Check out Gantz if you haven't all ready. It can be irritating at times but having a bunch of chapters to read through at once helps a lot.

Blade of the Immortal was supposed to wrap up around volume 25 or so I think. Since I'm far too lazy to look myself, does anyone know how close the series is to that? I've got the first 16 or 17 TPB's, and they're all amazing.

Volume 22 is the latest volume out from Dark Horse as far as I can tell, and they're up to 26 in Japan and it's still ongoing. Though it's supposed to be the final arc.

I really love BotI, and have been reading the Dark Horse releases for years. I actually think I like the antagonists like Magatsu and Anotsu the most. Manji has somehow been completely driven from the spotlight in terms of character development. His immortality has become less and less of an issue, almost to the point where I wonder if the author just decided he didn't really want a story about a immortal feudal Japan wanderer slicing evil people up. I can't even remember the last time they even referenced the 1000 men he's supposed to kill. It's become a complete non-issue.
