If a new chapter does come out this month I think I might have to hold off on reading the last FMA chapter and bask in the glory of both at the same time.

Has FMA been concluding epically? How satisfied are the posters in the Brotherhood/Manga threads, I've been scared to look for fear of spoilers.

Volume 22 is the latest volume out from Dark Horse as far as I can tell, and they're up to 26 in Japan and it's still ongoing. Though it's supposed to be the final arc.

I really love BotI, and have been reading the Dark Horse releases for years. I actually think I like the antagonists like Magatsu and Anotsu the most. Manji has somehow been completely driven from the spotlight in terms of character development. His immortality has become less and less of an issue, almost to the point where I wonder if the author just decided he didn't really want a story about a immortal feudal Japan wanderer slicing evil people up. I can't even remember the last time they even referenced the 1000 men he's supposed to kill. It's become a complete non-issue.

This is actually quite interesting you should say that. The author Samura was a pretty novice writer when BOTI started in '98 and, like Miura, he didn't know exactly how he wanted the story to go. Also like Miura, he started with a gimmicky premise designed to hook readers (In Berserk's case, it was Guts' giant fuckoff iron slab). It's pretty noticeable that the quality of the character development and story changes and grows as much as the artwork. Compare the first volume with the latest. Now I guess the story is less about the gimmick 'badass anti-hero kills some guys' and more about the characters, particularly Rin, who was just a foil for the hero to get off his rear end and do something. She's really a fantastic character.

And you're right, BOTI is now on its final arc as we speak. At least some comic artists know when it's time to end a goddam story.

The one thing I didn't like about Blade of the Immortal is that Manji is supposed to be this great swordsman but always seemed to win fights in the first few volumes (all I read) because he was immortal and not because he was in any way a better swordsman. Does this ever change during the course of the manga?

I might have to try reading it again if the author focuses more on Rin because I remember liking her, though I can't remember enough to say why since it was years ago I read what I did.

It doesn't change at all; in fact that's somewhat of a major plot point now. He's no where near as good of a swordsman as most of the villains, and it vexes him to no end. But it hasn't been as "important" because, like I said, the focus of the story has drastically shifted away from Manji.

Rin has indeed been pretty important though, so you have that at least.

Haha. At one point Manji's lost so many limbs that even he remarks on it. He's not a good swordsman at all really- too sloppy. I guess when you have the ability to live forever you don't care if you get stabbed

How many has he put out this year? 2 or 3? Let's say we get 3 more now through the end of July, and hopefully he comes off break again in October for another 3 round burst. That's 8, maybe 9 chapters in one year. Not even double digits, it really sucks too.

It wasn't double digits last year either. To be honest if we ever get double digits again it'll be a miracle.

You guys are as bad as Sankaku Complex (hint: distorting poo poo)

Yes, he drew a dumb weird picture as an extra for a published volume. He also drew a comic making fun of people in the censorship debate, a censorship debate that is much broader than just pedophilia (Evangelion would be banned, for instance, as well as anything that features bad things happen to women on any level).

Also, keep in mind the author comments in Young Animal tend to be not serious.

I tend to overreact about things pertaining to Schierke because I know how popular she is among those with bad intentions. I'm sure that Miura draws things with light humor and isn't a creepy weirdo (for the most part) but

I mean take Berserk, which is a dark fantasy comic devoid of lightness or cute, aside from goofy SD sequences once in a blue moon, and yet lo and behold creepy weirdos latch onto Schierke, the lone tiny girl, in a way that makes me more than a bit uncomfortable. I dunno, I'm tired and I ain't making any sense and this is a bad post, ugh

Is it true that that 'loli ban' was perpetuated by the minute Fundamental Christian population of Japan, or was that something that Sankaku latched onto and made a 'thing'? I find it hard to believe that a minority of about 2% would have enough sway to throw Japan into such a polarized debate

It has nothing to do with fundamental christians and everything to do with international opinions abroad. Remember the Rape Lay controversy for awhile? It's the same thing; people were asking JAPAN WHY YOU SO BACKWARD and then Tokyo is acting to try to protect its reputation... except they're not clear about their censorship at all, so it's running the risk of it being like a porn ban in the US removing Lolita for being perceived as pornographic.

Basically, a lot of writers and mangaka are worried, but you have others on the other side who support the ban, and things are complicated by having outright pedophiles kind of ruin the counter argument.

No doubt. I guess they're at a loss for what to do and therefore submit a really poorly-worded blanket law. And as we all know pedophiles supporting anything doesn't exactly help the cause

A lot of Evangelion has sexuality in it, and semi-nude scenes of non-pornographic value. Take the rather infamous "Shinji freaking out at Asuka in the hospital bed and going weird" scene; it's an important one and of artistic merit (though gross as hell, which is the point), and was actually used both as an example of what would be banned and what wouldn't be (hence people are all ??? about the bill).

Berserk would be banned outright, of course, due to it being such a broad spectrum equal opportunity mass rapist/ murderer manga.
