I got an e-mail from a relative with this link in it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qv_zjGTs9E&feature=player_embedded The email was entitled: FW: Fw: FW: FW: Obama Gives Major Swath of Arizona Back to Mexico Five seconds of research revealed this and I sent it back: From http://www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges/arizona/buenosaires/ June 2010 Recently there were reports in the news stating that the Buenos Aries National Wildlife Refuge was closed. This information is not correct. In early 2006, a small section of land (about 3% of the refuge) along the border was closed to visitation. However, no new restrictions are in place and the majority of the refuge remains open. Today, we are seeing a decline in violent activity in the southern most area thanks to ongoing cooperation between the US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Customs and Border Protection. The Refuge will reopen the lands along the border at such time that it is determined to be safe for visitors. I went on to explain how the youtube video's title and e-mail title was extremely misleading. The Fox News anchor seems to say the area was just NOW closed. Sigh. Edit: And I sent them this nice page, but its a biased blog, so its irrelevant to them: http://mediamatters.org/blog/201006160058 Siroc fucked around with this message at 18:09 on Jun 21, 2010 |

When I was just starting to lean left in my politics in high school, I took a road trip with some members of my fairly-to-very-conservative family. At some point, I think as part of my reasoning for why Bush was an awful President, I said something to the effect of "even Canada's health care system is better than ours; at least everyone gets covered." I was pretty harshly put down with the response that the American poor can easily have their health taken care of by just stiffing the emergency room. My family member is an ER doctor.

This was, oddly enough, the argument used to support the Arizona bill. Additionally, gays are wrong because their behavior is unnatural and leads to the extinction of a species because of their inability to reproduce. You see, a man and a women have parts that go together naturally, while two men do not. I could not rebut these statements, as doing so would be like trying to stop a freight train of lunacy with a sheet of drywall.

The best part is my dad tells me I'll have the same exact views once I get older, how I don't want the goddamn liberals taking my paycheck to give to welfare queens who don't work 2% as hard as I do, etc. All my friends are also conservative and everyone I know hates Obama. I've gotten more pragmatic as I've aged, as I've learned how the system works and what is possible (and what is not). I think what's really at work is that as you get older, you start not to give a poo poo what anyone thinks of your opinions any more. Superficial attitudes affected for social reasons gradually fall away, and you start to see the person as they've always been. Sometimes it's not pretty.

(I've also seen the quote attributed to P.J. O'Rourke which would at least fit with the way his politics changed as he got older (and in his own words the single biggest factor driving him to the Republicans and then the Libertarians was seeing the deductions on his first pay cheque, which is the other real reason people tend to get more right-wing as they get older).

I guess I finally got on someone's fwd list thanks to Words with Friends, of all things: Written by a 82 year old very wise tea party lady. She gives us a whole new slant on the job Obama is doing: That is right - I will say it "(THANK GOD FOR THE PRESIDENT)." 1. He destroyed the Clinton Political Machine - Driving a stake thru the heart of Hillary's Presidential aspirations -something that no Republican was never able to do. Remember when a Hillary Presidency scared the daylights out of you! 2. He killed off the Kennedy Dynasty - No more Kennedy's trolling Washington looking for booze and women wanting rides home. American women and Freedom are safer tonight! 3. He is destroying the Democratic Party before our eyes! Dennis Moore had never lost a race - quit Evan Bayh had never lost a race - quit Byron Dorgan had never lost a race - quit Harry Reid - soon to be GONE These are just a handful of the Democrats whose political careers Obama has destroyed! By the end of 2010 dozens more will be gone. In December of 2008 the Democrats were on the rise. In the last two election cycles they had picked up 14 senate seats and 52 house seats. The press was touting the death of the Conservative Movement and the Republican Party. In just one year, Obama put a stop to all of this and will probably give the house, if not the senate back to the Republicans. 4. He has completely exposed liberals and progressives for what they are. Every Generation seems to need to relearnthe lesson on why they should never actually put liberals in charge. He is bringing home the lesson very well. Liberals tax, borrow and spend - check Liberals won't bring themselves to protect America - check Liberals want to take over the economy - check Liberals think they know what is best for everyone - check Liberals aren't happy till they are running YOUR life - check 5. He has brought more Americans back to conservatism than anyone since Reagan. In one year he has rejuvenated the Conservative movement and brought out to the streets millions of Freedom Loving Americans. Name me one other time in your life that you saw your friends and neighbors this interested in taking back America! 6. His leadership has sparked the greatest period of sales of firearms and ammunition this country has seen. Law abiding citizens have rallied and have provided a "stimulus" to the sporting goods field while other industries have failed, faded or moved offshore. 7. In all honesty one year ago I was more afraid than I have been in my life. Not of the economy but of the direction our country was going. I thought Americans had forgotten what this country was all about. My neighbors, friends and strangers proved to me that my lack of confidence of the Greatness and Wisdom of the American people was flat wrong. 8. When the American People wake up no smooth talking teleprompter reader can fool them! Barack Obama woke up these Great Americans! Again I want to say Thank You Barack Obama! This is exactly the kind of hope and change we desperately needed

My dad and his borderline mentally retarded girlfriend were saying that black people should be happy slavery existed, as they'd be stuck in lovely Africa otherwise, and we all know Africa is so lovely because of all the black people there. It has nothing to do with colonialism or anything like that. Apparently I still haven't started "working" enough even though I'm nearly 30 years old and have been working for the majority of my life. My dad also pulled out the "there are black people, and there are niggers" line, and that southern black people are all nice and respectful. His girlfriend backed him up and said she knows since she lived in Alabama. I then accused them of being racist, and she then rebuts that her second cousin's step grandchild or some poo poo is half black or something. Yeah, that definitely means you can't be racist. I don't really think my dad is racist, but I think he says whatever he thinks will impress his stupid girlfriend. I hate her!

So going back to that Joe Legal vs. Jose Illegal mail, I just wanted to say something. No wonder all the Mexicans come across illegally. I'm an American and I'd love a job that paid $15 an hour under the table. Shame that in reality an illegal getting paid under the table is far more likely to get $5 an hour if he's lucky, with bonus threats to call INS if he asks for more money.

I really don't think that's true. Everyone's got a stereotype of a Mexican strawberry picker making $2 and hour, but I'm pretty even those jobs are over minimum wage. Employers work them an illegal amount of hours and days, but we have to be talking about the reality of their hardship, not some caricature. I'm not in school anymore, so I can't do a quick search myself, but I can't imagine there's not a bunch of studies on this.
