When I was just starting to lean left in my politics in high school, I took a road trip with some members of my fairly-to-very-conservative family. At some point, I think as part of my reasoning for why Bush was an awful President, I said something to the effect of "even Canada's health care system is better than ours; at least everyone gets covered." I was pretty harshly put down with the response that the American poor can easily have their health taken care of by just stiffing the emergency room. My family member is an ER doctor.

The best part is my dad tells me I'll have the same exact views once I get older, how I don't want the goddamn liberals taking my paycheck to give to welfare queens who don't work 2% as hard as I do, etc. All my friends are also conservative and everyone I know hates Obama. And I live in the most liberal part of my state.

I've gotten more pragmatic as I've aged, as I've learned how the system works and what is possible (and what is not). I think what's really at work is that as you get older, you start not to give a poo poo what anyone thinks of your opinions any more. Superficial attitudes affected for social reasons gradually fall away, and you start to see the person as they've always been. Sometimes it's not pretty.

So going back to that Joe Legal vs. Jose Illegal mail, I just wanted to say something. No wonder all the Mexicans come across illegally. I'm an American and I'd love a job that paid $15 an hour under the table. Shame that in reality an illegal getting paid under the table is far more likely to get $5 an hour if he's lucky, with bonus threats to call INS if he asks for more money.

I really don't think that's true. Everyone's got a stereotype of a Mexican strawberry picker making $2 and hour, but I'm pretty even those jobs are over minimum wage. Employers work them an illegal amount of hours and days, but we have to be talking about the reality of their hardship, not some caricature. I'm not in school anymore, so I can't do a quick search myself, but I can't imagine there's not a bunch of studies on this.
